From analyzing an audience questionnaire about music magazine preferences:
- The majority of respondents were between ages 17-18, matching the target age of many music magazines.
- R&B was the most popular music genre among respondents.
- Respondents were mostly attracted to exclusive interviews in magazines and preferred to see a balance of images and text.
- Most respondents preferred a natural background on magazine covers and images sized at large or medium.
2. Question 1
From asking this question I was able to discover that there
is no specific gender which is more attracted to reading
music magazines. This is possibly because of the wide
range of music genres and magazines which try to ensure
that their target audience consists of both males and
females or one specific gender. For example, the NME
targets both males and females whereas Guitarist
magazine targets mainly only males.
Q1. What is your gender?
Male Female
3. Question 2
From the 20 people that filled out my questionnaire 16 of
the individuals were aged 17-18, the same age as the
target audience of many music magazines. The magazines
may target this age group due to the fact that they are at an
age where they are easily influenced and aspire to look up
to idols (music artists), making them an easy target
audience for the magazine.

4. Question 3
Asking the audience this question allowed me to realise
which genre of music is most popular and as expected RnB
was the most popular music genre. This is possibly
because of the teenage audience which read magazines
may feel that they can relate to this music as well as people
from all ages.

5. Question 4
Asking the target audience of many music magazines has
allowed me to discover what content attracts them the most
to music magazines and expected the audience are mostly
attracted to ‘Exclusive Interviews’ this is due to the fact that
these type of interviews will allow the reader to gain what
they think is a personal insight of someone’s life, allowing
them to relate or feel closer to the artist sharing their
personal information.

6. Question 5
As all of the people which I had distributed my
questionnaire to were teenagers I had expected the results
which I received as no one was willing to spend more than
£3 on a magazine. This may be because majority of
teenagers have no income so spending £3 is a big loss to
them, making them unwilling to spend any money. If I had
given m questionnaire to someone of an older age with a
source of financial income then they may say that they’re
willing to spend £3 and above.

7. Question 6
Asking this question allowed me to see what the target
audience are attracted to when purchasing a magazine as
the main reason as to why some people purchase
magazines in the first place is due to the fact that there is
free merchandise. From my results I was able to see that
mainly people are interested in receiving free tickets, this is
due to the fact that some ticket prices can be extremely
high and unaffordable for the teenage target audience.

8. Question 7
Asking this question has allowed me to realise that within a
contemporary society the purchases of magazines has
decreased dramatically as majority of the people asked
responded that they do not purchase magazines ‘Not at all
often’, this is possibly because all of the information that
can be found within a magazine can be found on the
internet instead for free.

9. Question 8
I had asked the target audience this question due to the fact that
from the many music magazines which I had analysed the
backgrounds had varied immensely. The results I had gathered
from this questions showed that the audience prefer to read a
magazine with a natural background, this is possibly due to the
fact that the audience may feel that they are able to relate to the
magazine more if it was more natural and that the natural
background portrays the information contained in the magazine,
making the audience believe that they’re reading the natural
truth.

10. Question 9
Asking this question has allowed me to understand what attracts
the audience to a magazine more, either text or images so that I
am able to have a view of how I should have my magazine
constructed. As expected, majority of the audience had said that
they preferred to either see more images or a balance of both
images and text. This ma be due to the fact that they may gain
more information from observing the images, the teenage
audience may want to try and look like the artist which they
idolise and lastly it may be because they’re too busy or lazy to
read and seeing that there’s lots of text may put them off of
reading or purchasing the magazine.

11. Question 10
I had asked the audience this question so that I can be
aware of the size that I should have my images in my
magazine. The most common sizes that people preferred
to see varied between large and medium, so that the
images are clear for them to read without the reader
struggling to see it or without the image taking over the
whole page.
