This document provides analysis and summaries of the responses to a 10-question survey regarding ideas for a regional magazine focused on lifestyle and fashion in Leicester, England. Some key findings include:
- Respondents ranged in age from 15-18+, providing varied perspectives.
- Articles and recommendations were the most popular suggested content.
- Pictures and a short description were deemed most important for billboard advertising.
- A website would need interesting content like articles to drive traffic.
- Black, red, and purple were the top colors associated with "punk fashion".
- Both males and females indicated they may read the magazine depending on featured content.
2. Question 1
This time, unlike the pilot questionnaire, I
have opened this out to more people of
more of a variety of ages. So I have
some people in the 15-16 range and
some in the +18 range as well as the
normal 17-18 range. This means that I
will get more of a varied response to
each question. This means I will get
some responses from people who are
more mature and some who are still
learning and I think that this is important
for my research.
3. Question 2
This question is just a question that I
asked because I think females and males
have different responses to each
question, as another reference to
maturity like the age question. I put in
“prefer not to say” so that if someone is
sensitive to this kind of question they can
select this. However nobody selected this
choice so all the people taking this
questionnaire are certain about their
gender and are either female or male.
4. Question 3
I asked this question in my pilot questionnaire as
well and found that it was a good question to ask as
it will guide the survey taker a lot better through the
questionnaire. It also introduces the survey taker to
the questionnaire as a whole. This question is
beneficial for me because it will give me an idea of
on average how many people have heard of a
regional magazine. The results show that the
majority of people who took this questionnaire said
“no” which doesn’t really surprise me because
before my research, I wasn’t really too sure about
what a regional magazine was myself. The rest
have said “yes or “I have a rough idea”. This makes
me feel better that it’s 5/11 that said “no” but 6/11
have said the rest. I think this is really uplifting
because more people than I thought said they kind
of knew.
5. Question 4
In this question, I got a lot less responses in the “I
chose “yes”” choice. Most people who chose “I
have a rough idea” in the question before, clearly
chose “I chose ”no”” other wise I would have a lot
more responses. Only four people left a response.
I think when asked this question, they may not
have enough of an idea to say the kinds of things
that they would want to see in one because there
are lots of different things you can say. I kind of
wished I said a specific genre of regional magazine
as it is left really open with the question I have
asked and people may feel intimidated by this
question.
6. Question 4
These are the responses from the people who chose “yes” in
the previous question. The first answer says “articles specific
to the genre”. This is something that is required for a regional
magazine. Igoing to do my magazine based around
Leicester as this is where I live and so I will be more familiar
with the things I will be including in the articles. The next
respose is very similar to the last response before this. It
says “things going on in the local area” so becasue this is so
similar to the first response that I will not analyse it. The next
answer is similar but it is quite interesting how they worded
it. “New shops that are opening n the local area and local
events.” This is a really interesting way of wording things
because they specified certain things like new shops and
local events and so this is more interesting. will be sure to
include things like new shops to add a little more information
and to help when it comes to figuring out ideas as to what
the articles will be about. Finally, the last respose says
“fahion”. This is a good job they said this because that is one
of the genres of my magazine. Shops and local events links
in well with the lifestyle section.
7. Question 5
This question I made so that the survey taker can just
check as many boxes as they think is best for their
answer. It was quite an even spread of people who
chose each section. However, the one that got the
most responses was Articles. This is something that
makes a magazine more interesting and gives the
magazine the structure that it needs. The next most
chosen was Recommendations. This was the one that
was second most chosen on the pilot questionnaire
which proves to me that this is a popular choice. I left
this quite open in the choice of recommendations
because I didn't specify what remmendations they
would be of but people seemed to like this. The next
two are tied with each other, Advice and Food, and
the last one is Healthcare, which I wasn't expecting
that many votes for.
8. Question 6
This question I left very open. I wanted to see what kinds of
things they would like to see on a billboard. This is an eier
question to answer because everytime you go to town or to
the cinema or go shopping, you will always see billboards
everywhere, whether they are electronic or of the side of a
building. They are also often seen on the motorway as you
are driving along. With this in mind, everybody has seen
billboard, so everybody will be able to give an answer for
this question. On this set of 5 responses, my favourite
answer is the first one, “Good pictures to represent what's in
the magazine. Good ratings?” This is a really good,
constructive answer. The first bit is about ictures. I think this
is really useful because the pictures are what make the
billboard more likely to have viewers and encourage people
to read the magazine. This is really useful for me when I
make my billboard because now I know that the pictures are
what people look at first. The last bit is good ratings. This is
interesting as I didn't really think this was something that
people focus on. However I think that they are really
important for the viewer to see that professionals have given
it good ratings.
9. Question 6
There are a couple of responses on this part of the
responses. The one that interested me the most was
“social influences, bright colours etc.” because of the
social influences bit. I found this interesting because
not many people would think first about this kind of
thing for a billboard, although it is important. I am
assuming that this person is talking about social
network platforms like Facebook and Twitter. This is
important to include because most of the people in
my target audience will be on some of these
platforms and so will most likely be drawn to this
more and more. I also found the third comment down,
“The title...and a very short synopsis of what is
included.” This is interesting to me because I think
that some kind of short snappy catch phrase or a
sentence of what the reader can expect can be what
makes the reader read the magazine in the first
place.
10. Question 7
This question is just so I can see, on average,
how many people in this target audience would
look at a magazine's website. An equal amount
of people chose “yes” or “no” which does make it
easier for me. However, what intested me was
that most people chose the option of “if there
was something interesting.” I think this helps me
a lot more because now I know that if I put
something interesting in the website, I know that
more people would read it. I think this can be
advice, news, posters, new images,
competitions, subscriptions, recommendations,
or articles. I think this is a really helpful question
that I included and it leaves it open to what I
shoulde include in my website.
11. Question 8
This is another question I have included where the
survey taker can just tick as many boxes as they like
and it gives them the ability to give a bigger range of
answers to choose. Once again, it is like the billboard
question but for the website instead. I am happy that
a lot of people chose the Articles option because I
think this is one of the easiest things to put in the
website that will make it interesting. This is the same
with the next most chosen choice which is Pictures.
Once again, easy to include. As well as Ne. I am
happy with the reults as the three most chosen are
what I had already planned to include in my website
anyway. Interestingly, out of the two left,
Subscriptions and Locations, Locations was the one
that was chosen more Subscriptions only had one
person choose it. So I think that some kind of map or
links to maps or maybe Google Maps will be
somehting I will include as well.
12. Question 9
Just like the quuestion before this, I left the options
open, and for this questions, there was lots to choose
from. I asked what kinds of colours they would
associate with “Punk Fashion”. This fashion type can
very often be misjudged or maybe mistaken for the
punk music fashion, which is very veyr different. I think
that this kind of fashion is quite creative and can
connote a lot of things about the person, like their
creativity or their interests. With this in mind, I wasn't
surprised to see black and red and purple being the
three most chosen colours. These colours are kind of
typical of the this fashion type. However, I was kind of
surprised to see grey being the next most chosen
colour. This isn't really the colour that I would
associate with punk fashion or punk music fashion. I
know that people may have different interretations and
so I am open to that, I was however kind of surprised.
Burgundy was the next most chosen colour. I
purposely put this colour in the mix because I feel like
this kind of colour would be appropriate for this fashion
type as it is a mixture of red and purple, which are both
highly chosen in this survey question.
13. Question 10
Finally I wanted to see who would choose to take the
time to read this kind of magazine from the target
audience age I have chosen. I am not surprised to
see that quite a few people chose “maybe” because I
don't think that someone would be completely not
interested. I feel like if a celebrity that they liked or
maybe a siger or band they liked was on a magazine,
they wd most likely read it. I am, however, surprised
to see that nobody chose “no” because I expected
some boys to choose it as it is mainly girls that would
be interested in fashion and lifestyle themed things. I
looked onto the different responses individually and
actually saw that all the people who chose “maybe”
were females which really surprised me.
