This document outlines an ASSURE method lesson plan to teach months of the year to a first grade special education class. The plan analyzes the learners, noting their age, demographics, potential prior knowledge, and learning styles. The objective is for students to recite the months through a song, grouping activity, and video with 100% accuracy in three weeks. Methods selected include a song, online video, and index cards. The plan describes utilizing these materials and requiring learner participation through a points system, competition, and praise. Formative assessment will evaluate understanding and allow revision of ineffective activities.

ASSURE Method
A – Analyze the Learners
General
 First grade; 6-7 years old; special education
 10 boys, 7 girls
 70% Caucasian, 20% African American, 10% Latino
Specific Entry Competencies
 Students probably do not know the months
 Might know months in a different language
 Cannot assume they know months/ask them to say months they know to get a feel
for what they already know
Learning styles
 Since 7 of them have ADHD, each student will probably learn in a different way
 Must take into consideration to ensure all students grasp the concept
 Motivate students with enthusiasm
S – State Objective
Students will recite the months of the year through singing a song, segmenting the
months into three groups of four, working in groups to put months in order, and showing a video
about months with 100% accuracy in three weeks.

 Make sure laminated index cards are ready and easily available prior to lesson

2.  Give students points for participation
 Have a contest to see which group can place the months in order the fastest
 Praise students trying and participating
 Encourage students even when incorrect
E – Evaluate and Revise
 I will assess formatively throughout the entire lesson and make sure my students
are staying on task and are actively engaged, while also grasping concept.
 I will have students apply what they have learned by doing activities.
 Through the practice of formative assessment, I will have insight on which
activities are helping my students understand the concept.
 If I find that the activities are not helping with the concept, I will create new ones
that will work better for the next day.
