This document outlines a lesson plan to teach first grade students the months of the year. The class has 17 students between the ages of 6-7 from a range of cultural backgrounds. Over the course of 2 weeks, the teacher will use songs, videos, games and a calendar to help students recite the 12 months with 100% accuracy. Specific activities include learning a months of the year song, using a colorful calendar, and a matching game with month names and numbers. The teacher will prepare materials, motivate students, and encourage participation through dancing and small group work. Progress will be evaluated individually and lessons revised as needed.

1. Assure Method
Analyze Learners:
• Age: Mostly between the ages of 6 & 7
• Gender: 10 boys and 7 girls
• Grade: 1st
• Culture: White - 70%, African-American - 20%, & Latino - 10%
• 7 students with ADHD
State Objectives:
• My first grade class will recite the months of the year by using a calender,
learning songs, watching videos and playing games. The students will be able to
recite all 12 months within 2 weeks with 100% accuracy.
Select the 3 M's:
• Methods: Learning the Month's Song - let the kids get up and dance while
singing the song.
• Being repetitive with the calender- have a colorful fun calender and go through 2
or 3 months a day. Keep adding the months from the day before until all 12 are
taught.
• Write the name of the months on strips of paper, number 1-12 on the back and
lay them out in a circle. Have the students try and put them in order and check
their work with the numbers on the back. (Pictures to signify months will work as
well!)
• Media: Audio - singing the months of the year along with music
Television: watching fun clips on the months of the year
• Obtaining Materials: I will be making some of my own and, if available, using the
television and compuer to obtain videos and music.

2. Utilize Media and Materials:
• Come to class prepared along with having the environment prepared -- make
sure television works and that the correct movie is in. Have the calender ready
and the game prepared to hand out.
• Motivate my learners - let the students know you are excited for them to learn
the months of the year and you know they can accomplish it.
Require Learner Participation:
• In order to let my students get up, move, and have fun while still learning, I will
play the Month's Song and let the students jump around and dance.
• To involve peer interaction, we will do our months of the year game in small
groups so they can help each other figure out the order the months go in.
Evaluate and Revise:
• I will evaluate how each activity aides the students in learning the months. If I
see an activity is not helping the students and seems to be confusing them, I will
modify it in a way I see better suits them.
• I will asses each students progress individually while listening to them recite the
months of the year and watching how easily they can put the months in their
correct order during the game.
