Analyzing the Learners:
A special education class of 17 1st graders (10 boys, 7 girls) 70% white, 20%
African American, and 10% Hispanic. 7 of the students have mild to severe
ADHD.
State Objective:
The first grade class will be able to chronologically identify each of the 12 months
of the year. The students will be engaged in a variety of different activities in
order to assist the different learning styles of each student. Some of the activities
will include: singing songs, watching instructional videos, viewing an
instructional lecture on the overhead, and making calendars. 100% of the students
will learn the months of the year within one week.
Select Media, Methods, and Materials:
-
Audio (Music)
-
Computer
-
Overhead
-
Making Calendars
-
Knuckle Month Method (Learning which months have 31 days)
2. Utilize Media and Materials:
In order to assure that the music and videos presented to the children is
appropriate for the children, the teacher will listen through the songs and watch
the videos carefully. This also allows the teacher to decide if the song and
videos will be effective for special needs children that are in the 1st grade. The
students will be divided into groups of 3 and will be as diverse as possible. The
teacher will divide the ADHD children up among the other children who have
different ethic backgrounds.
Require Learner Participation:
The teacher will break the children up into small groups of 3. Each group will be
as diverse as possible. This will allow the children to step out of their comfort
zones and allow them to become comfortable with people who aren’t like them.
The teacher will individually go from songs, to videos, then show them calendars,
and finally give examples from the overhead projector. The teacher will observe
the children and help them as needed.
Evaluate and Revise:
The teacher will observe which media worked and what didn’t work. The teacher
will also observe which students grasped the lesson and which students struggled.
If there are children who struggled with it, then they will be put alongside another
group on the next school day in order for them to assist their classmates.
Finally, the teacher will ask themself if the methods and media they are using
is working with the children regarding their special needs.
