Analysis of my chosen magazine –
Contents Page

2. The layout of this contents pages,
allows the audience to see the
group having fun together and
laughing. Whilst the typography
surrounds the main image with the
main heading of ‘CONTENTS’ at
the top right, the page numbers and
what will feature on them to the
sides and the tour, that was on the
top of the strapline on the front
page, on the bottom of the page
with more information about.
The font of the main heading is the same as the masthead on the front
page, maybe because they didn’t contain the masthead on there. The
main heading has a drop shadow effect to it, to make it stand out and
appear to be popping to the reader's eye. It is also surrounded by
some threatening objects, such as a snake, beer bottle, skull, a Ouija
board and a spanner. These are all objects to suggest what the
magazine could be about or focus on what type of topics they might
focus on in their songs.
The main image, that contain a group
of people, all use direct address
towards the reader as a main code of
convention, that most magazine follow.
The mise-en-scene in this image is a
big red chair that they all sit and stand
on to portray them in a positive light of
them having fun. One group member
also wears sunglasses, whilst the sun
doesn’t seem to be shining brightly on
them, this connotes a sense of
coolness as he wears them for a
fashion statement and not for
protection against the sun as that’s
what cool kids do as the hold cans and
drinks laughing, which represents what
their target audience might do a lot, so
they can relate to the image.
This contents page follows the same
house style of from their front cover, but
doesn’t include the colour scheme of
purple within it but has the yellow, black
and white.
Another image that’s below the
typography of the article’s content has a
caption and a page number on the
picture and links to the article featured
at the front page and the picture
describes the coverline further as the
picture shows two faces of the model of
one of him shouting and one of him
being calm in that medium close up.
The editor’s letter to the audience is a the top of the content in a
black border, below the issue number and date, to talk to his
readers directly and make them want to read the magazine more as
they feel like they have got to know the editor a little. It contains a
medium close up of two men that might be the editor, James, and
his friend. Also in small along the side of the bottom image shows
who took that image and the main image.

3. The column is to the right of the page and doesn’t have much content in there too not bore the audience and
have them focus on flicking through the magazine and seeing themselves, what it has to offer. The article titles
are in bold black and where this information was from in orange and the sub-headings in black with a yellow
border. All the typography is in serif font, which is a typical code and convention for most magazines to have.
This magazine doesn’t really follow
the codes and conventions of most
magazines as they usually have the
masthead in bold somewhere on the
page, like near the content main
heading. Although it contains an
image of the whole of the front cover
next to the column in a small size. So
this is still brand identity as you can
see the masthead and it helps the
audience remember which magazine
they are reading.
The rule of thirds on this contents
page makes the audience mainly
focus on the middle of the main
image and the image of the editor, so
people read it to see why the image is
on there. It also focuses on the sub-
headings, the tours at the bottom in a
orange border and the image at the
bottom with the man. Not much dead
space is on here expect on the main
image.
The target audience will be
interested in rock so the colour
scheme would like the look and
layout of this contents page as
it’s not got too much typography
to bore the audience and it got
little icons with the things they
might like. Also, and the colours
aren’t too bright or dull because
they wouldn’t want it to be too
depressing but not bright as it’s
too happy.
Also, as they will be teenagers,
there’s not many long words or
sexual content.
The borders around images
are thin and haven’t got a
strong stroke on it as they
are pretty faint.
