Music magazine

Initial introductory task 1
General questions about music magazines
What is a music magazine?
Music magazines are a combination of images and text. They can cover many genres like,
rock, pop, classical and jazz. There are many target audiences but the main ones would be
young adults and teenagers. Or can be targeted to who ever likes the type of music that is
used on the magazine no matter how old they are. They will include denotations like
instruments and groups of people.
What content would you expect to find in a
music magazine?
Cover lines are expected on the front cover so it attracts the buyers to buy it because they have a
chance to gain or win something. We would like to see bands with their new songs or albums
released as the target audiences would be interested in this. They would also like to see
interviews with their favourite singers to see what they are really like. A colour scheme should be
easily noticed but only using a few colours as you don’t want a lot of colours clashing with each
other or it looking untidy. A clear layout should be used so everything can be read. Audiences
don’t want to see small bits of text squeezed into a corner of the page as it looks unpresentable.
What images would you expect to find in a
music magazine?
Musical instruments would be expected to be seen and mentioned as the readers role model may
play an instrument and they will want to know how to play them if they want to be like them. A
different range of shots of artists so they can recognise who will be talked about in the magazine.
Pictures of the artists new albums would helpful to admirers so they know what they are looking
for when they buy the CD. We would expect to see a bright background behind the image
because this will attract the reader to see what the article will be about. Using the correct camera
shot/angle is important because if you use a shot which doesn’t present the image well then it
will be ignored as the audience wont know what it is about. If a person is used in the image, the
right expression is vital. If it’s a pop magazine then the audience would want to see friendly facial
expressions as it shows the magazine is inviting them to read it.
Identify general characteristics /features that
you would expect to find in all music magazines
• Price- so the audience knows how much to pay for the magazine
• Pug- is short bit of text to gain the attention from the audience
• Header- usually provide things page numbers to find certain articles
• Feature article- the main cover line on the front of the magazine
• Colour scheme- using only 2 or 3 colours throughout the front page and
contents page
• Puff piece- exaggerated praise of an article to attract the target audience
• Font- colour of a certain piece of text
• Cover mount- is the storage of media like a packaged toy on the front
• Anchorage text- is the fixing of a meaning, e.g. a copy text anchor shows
the meaning of a an image to a printed advertisement
• Barcode- where to scan for the magazine
• Direct address- when there is person directly at the camera
• Masthead- the title of a newspaper or magazine, usually found at the top
of the front cover
• Cover lines- a short piece of text on the front cover to lure you in to
reading the magazine
• Straplines- a heading or a caption about an image
• Main picture- the main image used on the front cover of the magazine
Identify the features/characteristics they
all have
• Big bold mastheads- this is so the masthead stands out and it is clear what the magazine is
called.
• Direct address from main image- this is so the magazine is connecting with the audience so
they feel welcome to read it.
• Cover lines- these are used to lure the audience into reading what the magazine has to offer
and see what they can get or learn about how to do something.
• One main cover line- the main cover line needs to stand out more than the rest because it is
the most important article to read about in the magazine
• Famous people on the front page- this is used because they might be someone's idol. Hs is
will then mean that they would want to get the magazine to see what it has to say about
them.
Why are these features present on all of
the magazines? Why are they important?
All of these features are present in the magazine because the magazine wants to invite the target
audiences to get the magazine and read it. All of these features are important because it shows
that the magazine has got a lot to talk about that may interest the audience. If these features
where not included then magazine would be very bare and unattractive and the audience would
not want to get the magazine and would get another one.
What type of genre is it? 4 examples of the
magazine that supports your claim that it
belongs to this particular sub-genre.
The genre is RnB.
Say who you think the target audience is. Give
reasons for your reasons.
I think the target audience is teenagers and young children. This is because Drake is a young
singer and is known as being a role model to the children. Also older people wouldn’t know who
he is. Because he is ayoung, younger kids feel like they can relate to him and they have something
in common.
