1. My Magazine Proposal
My Chosen Genre:
The genre I am creating my magazine for is teen-pop. I have decided to choose this genre as it is a
genre that many people know, even if they are not a fan of the genre itself, they will know and
recognize many of the artists and songs. There is a lot of crossover appeal with the genre as even
fans of rock or indie will listen to pop from time to time.
Target Audience:
The target audience that my magazine will be aimed at is females aged 11-16. I have decided this
after doing research into the genre because it became clear that this target group listen to teen-pop
the most. One of the main reasons they listen to the music is that the songs contain lyrics that they
can relate to and the magazines contain content that they enjoy reading e.g. what the artists are
wearing, what make up they use etc.
My Magazine Title:
I have decided to name my magazine ‘PopGoss’. This title suggests that if they buy the magazine,
the audience will read the most recent and up-to-date news on the pop and hear gossip from the
artists within the interviews. Typically, teenage girls love to gossip about pop stars and celebrities
which is why the name might appeal them. The word ‘pop’ will automatically suggest to them that it
is a music magazine and will contain everything they will want to know about music for that month.
The Content Of The Whole Magazine:
The full magazine will contain a variety of different sections for the audience to be engaged in. The
contents page will be the first useful page and will guide the reader through the magazine and help
them find the pages they are interested in. This page will then be followed by pages such as
upcoming events (for that month) which will update the reader on things like tours and album
releases and then gossip pages that will tell the reader the latest gossip about pop artists. There will
be one page in each issue focusing on one female singer in particular and telling the reader what
that singer is wearing and where they can find cheaper replicas in high street stores. This takes the
attention off of music so the readers do not get bored with the magazine but is still related to pop in
some way by using a pop singer. There will be a few double page spreads throughout the magazine,
one being an interview with the artist featured on the cover and another being about who has won
what music award recently, with photographs showing them accepting there awards. There will be
quizzes and competitions throughout the magazine for the readers to win things to do with singers
e.g. signed merchandise. There will be some pages in the magazine that are pull-out posters for the
readers to keep and stick on their wall. There will also be adverts across the whole magazine
advertising things that that audience will be interested in for example, Katy Perry’s or One
Direction’s perfume.
2. Initial Ideas For My Front Cover:
I will have four different artists featuring on the front cover. One will be the main cover artist and
will be the biggest thing on the cover and then the other three will be in smaller boxes down the left
hand side. The main theme colour will be pink and will feature across the whole cover. It will be in
different shades with the title being in a very deep, bright pink and then the background to the
pictures a much paler pink. I will also highlight very important parts of the cover in bright yellow so
that it stands out and picks out the things that I want the reader to see. I will use strap lines
throughout the cover to give the readers a hint to what they will read if they buy the cover. Some of
these will be highlighted yellow to draw interest to them. The language on the cover will be slightly
informal so it properly relates to the audience the magazine is targeted at. The font wont be too
fancy so that it can be easily read and understood and so that they cover doesn’t look over crowded.
The text will also be bold and at decent size so it can be seen from a distance when its on the shelf. It
needs to be legible for the younger audiences so if its too small and fancy they wont be able to read
it.
Initial Ideas For My Contents Page:
The contents page will list everything that’s in the magazine other than advert pages. The main
colours will continue with the theme of the front cover and will be pinks and blues mainly. Again, the
main things like competitions and revealing strap lines will be highlighted in yellow. The title of the
contents page will be ‘Get The Goss…’ which will automatically make the reader think of celebrity
interviews and gossip which may interest them. The page will be laid out in squares with pictures of
the artist featuring in the square. The editorial will be written in the bottom left hand corner and will
be signed by the editor. This will humorous so the reader will be engaged even on the very first
page. The biggest square will be in the centre of the page towards the top and will be filled with a
picture of the main cover artist, directing the reader onto the page where the interview is featured.
In the bottom right hand corner there will be the page number and the web address for the
magazine’s website.
Initial Ideas For The Double Page Spread:
On the plan of my double page spread I have placed boxes where the images I will take of the artist
featuring on the cover (Nicki) will appear. These are down the one side of the magazine so they
create sort of a border around the interview, making Nicki the main focus. I will enlarge one of the
main quotes from the interview and will write it in a bright pink to draw people’s eye towards the
interview and make them want to read it to find out what she is talking about. I will also create
Twitter names and place them next to each of the questions to suggest that the questions have been
selected from Nicki’s fans across twitter. Her name is one of the biggest things on the page so when
people are flicking through the magazine, the interview is easy to spot and people will stop and read
the full pages. The questions are written in a bolder font and a different colour (blue) so it is easy to
distinguish them from the answers; it needs to be easily understood as the magazine is targeted at a
younger audience.
3. Initial Ideas For Photographs:
I will take photographs of four different people/bands to feature on my magazine. I want the images
to be bright to fit with the theme of the magazine. They will be taken on a plain background so they
do not overcrowd the cover of the contents page and the colours do not clash with other things
featuring on or in the magazine. The photograph that I will use as the main image on the cover will
be a medium close up of the artist so the audience can see the artist from a distance if the cover is
on the shelf. This also draws attention to the artists face and makes them the main focus of the
whole magazine. The photographs I will use on the left hand side of the cover will be a lot smaller
but will be of two different girls and a band. The images of the girls will be close ups of them smiling
but the image of the band will feature all of the members, maybe even playing instead of them just
posing. This will also suggest that they are on tour doing concerts, which is what there interview will
be about. The images on the contents page will also be in small boxes and will be of the same artists
but different photographs. They will be slightly bigger than the ones on the front to build the reader
up to the actual interview. The photos that I put on the double page spread will be of the main artist
(Nicki) doing different things and wearing different things. There will be a range of close ups and
medium close ups to show her from different aspects. The fact that there will be more than one
photo of her on the page will draw the attention of the audience straight to her.
