Pure Pop Magazine Targets Teen Girls
1. Task 9
Magazine Title: ‘Pure Pop’.
Explanation for my choice of genre:
I have decidedtocreate a pop magazine specificallyforteenagegirls.Despiteknowingthatthe pop
industryisfairlysaturated,Iknowthatit's a verypopularmagazine withmytargetaudience soI’m
confidentit’sgoingtodowell againstcompetitors. Mytarget audience isyoung/teenage girlsaged
between9- 15 of all ethnicitieswhoare frequentbuyersof popmusicandconcert tickets. They
won’thave a disposable incomeastheyare not of the age of work, sothe magazine will be soldata
reasonable price sotheycanpurchase the magazine withtheirpocketmoney. Fromexperience I
knowteenage girlslove celebritygossipabouttheirfavouritemusicianswhichindicateswhattype of
articlesIshouldfeature inmyfirstissue.Asi am aimingmymagazine toentice teenage girls,my
frontcover will feature averysuccessful boybandwhichwill appeal tomytargetaudience both
physicallyandmentally.There will be avarietyof artists(mostlymale based)featuredinmy
magazine withafree giftinside tocreate excitementandmake mymagazine standoutfromthe
remainingcompetitors.
Target audience: Stereotypically, white females are the dominant target audience that read
pop magazines. For my target audience, I am going to challenge the typical pop stereotype
and target my magazine to a range of ethnicities. My reader will be aged between 14-19;
will have a disposable income in order to purchase the magazine (form of independence as
they’re growing up). The gender of my target audience will be female as my questionnaire
has proved women to be the dominant readers of the pop genre. These teenage girls are
regular pop listeners and are frequently downloaders of the pop genre. They physically
enjoy the appearance of male artists and their music so are more likely to purchase a
magazine with their “celebrity crush” featured inside the issue.
Initial Ideas about Front Cover
The model (artist(s)) featured on the front cover will be an attractive, young male
which will instantly attract the attention of teenage girls. The shot of the artist will
2. be a medium shot using direct address (eye contact) to entice the girl’s attention and
allow the artist to be the focus of the front cover.
The house style (colour scheme) will be hot pink, purple and blue to create a more
sophisticated, grown up style. The font colour blue must be included as the
connotations match the masthead.
I will not be using a cover mount (freebie) on my front cover as I believe it will give
my front cover an immature style.
My main cover line will be my artist(s) name as the celebrity endorsement will
increase interest and demand.
My photo will be taken in the photography studio creating a plain background image
following the conventions of a typical magazine cover- giving my magazine a
professional finish.
I will be using puffs such as (+) to entice my target audience into reading that particle
article. It also convinces the readers they’re getting more value for their money.
My masthead will be placed across the top thirds in large typography so it will stand
out from the competing magazines, making sure the target audience can see my
magazine from a distance.
Initial Ideas about my contents page
My house style (colour scheme) will be the same as my front cover; branding my
magazine.
There will be a few smaller images of a variety of artists from different ethnicities;
implying my magazine is aimed at all ethnic groups.
My masthead will be placed in the top left third again branding my magazine. The
top left third is naturally where audience attention is attracted to, emphasising the
importance of my masthead.
I will have an “Editor’s Note” to create a friendly, welcoming tone to my target
audience. An informal text and a hand written signature emphasises the welcoming
tone to the target audience; reading a magazine should be relaxing and informal.
The cover lines are displayed on the left hand side with the page numbers
highlighted in bold making it easy for the target audience to find the article.
Subtitles are used to help divide the articles so the readers can find the articles
easier.
Across the top 2nd and 3rd third “Contents” will be underlined in fairly large text to
emphasis the purpose of the page.
Initial Ideas about double page spread
3. My double page spread will be a Q&A with one of my featured artists. The questions
will be in a separate font colour to the answers so the audience can clearly identify
the two.
A large image of my artist(s) will cover most/the entire 2nd page and the first page
will be full of text (not too much as we don’t want to make the page look clustered
and discourage the target audience to read the article).
Pull quotes will be used around the page in larger text to entice the audience into
reading the full article.
My artist name will be the title of my page in the largest typography- this celebrity
endorsement will increase the popularity of my magazine.
The House style will be repeated throughout my double page spread (font colours
for my Q&A) to create a constant style throughout my issue.
I will use a drop cap to entice the readers into reading the interview. Sans Serif font
will be used to add style to my Q&A.
Initial Ideas about photographs
Most of my photographs will be of artists from different ethnicities (representing my
target audience).
I will have both solo pictures and group pictures to represent the different kinds of
artists within the pop industry.
I will include pictures with a backdrop and without. With a backdrop for my front
cover and possibly double page spread. In my contents page, I could corporate
images with different locational backgrounds to give the audience information on
what their particular hobbies are outside of their career.
Each image will be different as each of my artists has a unique style, meaning their
fashion will give them an independent appearance making each image different from
each other.
Props can be used in each picture such as musical instruments. If an artist is skilled
within a particular area of music, they could be photographed with their gifted
instrument.
