ANALYSE THE FRONT COVER, CONTENTS PAGE AND DOUBLE PAGE
SPREAD OF MAGAZINE 1 (NME DIZZEE RASCAL EDITION, SEPT 2009)
DETAILED CLASS ANALYSIS OF MUSIC MAGAZINE
ONE NME
FRONT COVER
Main Image
• This is right in the middle and it is of a
artist Dizzee Rascal and the position he
is in i.e. his hand out shows he is
drawing attention to the audience and
sort of saying “come read me”
Flash
• This is usually in the shape of a circle
and may sometimes have the price of
the magazine if its on offer or it can be
about something that you wouldn’t find
anywhere else for example an interview
with some one famous.
Masthead
• The name of the magazine is in bright
red and outlined in white and then black
which are contrast colours so it stands
out clearly and you that people who are
interested in that type of music genre
will buy it. Main cover line
• This is in the middle of the magazine and it
is the name of a artist in the hip hop genre
so people who listen to hip hop music see
the name and want to know more about
them and buy the magazine to find out
about the artist.
Pull Quote
• Pull quotes are used to pull/catch the eye
of the target audience because publishers
know what sort of information to use to
attract people in order the make their
magazine a success.
Date/Barcode/Price
• This is placed at the bottom as it is nothing to with
the music genre so it placed at the bottom so its
doesn’t ruin the rest of the magazine and doesn’t
draw much attention.
Footer
• The footer also tell you what sort of information you
will find inside the magazine in this case it is the man
of artists which people who listen to hip hop will be
drawn to.
Header
• Tells you who the articles inside the
magazine are about and shows they
provide information with bands that fit into
that genre.
Left Third
• This usually has quotes or little parts
of the article which people would want
to read and find interesting. It could
be about a artist or anything else to
do with that genre.
CONTENTS PAGE
Masthead/Contents
• This tells you the different topic
inside the magazine and give s
outlines on the main articles.
Also the subheadings are there
to tell you about who the article
is about.
Band Index
• This tells you about what you have
on each page and what artist the
information is on, it is in a line on
the right hand side as people will
read t first and it gives you a bit
more details on what is inside.
Main Image
• This is placed in the middle this sort
of article is new/ different compared
to what is normally inside the
magazines.
Drop Cap
• This is at the start of an article and
usually drops down 2-5 lines in to the
start of the article.
Copy/Editorial
• This gives you little pieces of
information about some of the articles
and has the page number in brackets.
Subscription Box
• This gives you
information about the
different issues that
there are of the
magazine and how
you can subscribe to
them.
DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD
Main Image
• This is right in the middle and it
is of a artist Dizzee Rascal and
the position he is in i.e. his
hand out shows he is drawing
attention to the audience and
sort of saying “come read me”
Title
• The title of the magazine
takes up most of the page and
it really catchy for people
because is short and simple
yet affective.
Drop cap
• The drop cap is the first
letter of the article and
usually takes up 3-7 lines
into the paragraph.
It can be used to emphasise
and draw attention to the
actual article rather than the
picture.
Secondary image
• This is the picture of the artist
who is on the front cover this is
because it is the first article and
it needs o attract the audience
so they would want to read on
and find out more about what is
in the rest of the magazine.
This also sort of gives an
overview of the contents of the
magazine.
AUDIENCE
Who is the target audience for the NME?
• 80% of NME readers feel that music is an important part of their lives
• 79% of NME readers like to listen to new bands
• 63% specially choose to listen to indie/guitar bands
• 49% specially choose to listen to live bands in studio
• 52% are interested in taking a musical course/qualification
• 36% are thinking of buying a musical instrument in the next year
How does the NME attract it’s audience?
• It attracts its audience by providing them with the information and magazine articles that
they would be interested in which are to-do with the type of music magazine they are.
• They may also do interviews with some of the bands that are in that genre for their fans
and may also have details about concerts, tickets etc.
ELEMENTS THAT CONNECT THE 3 DIFFERENT
PARTS OF THE MAGAZINE.
• One element that connects the different part of the magazine is the colour scheme that is
used throughout, this is because it makes it look more professional and also the colour
scheme gives some idea of what genre it is for example bright colours suggests that it is a
pop magazine and black and white may suggest it is a rock type of magazine.
• The layout connects it because for example the page numbers will be in the same place
on all the pages and also they would use similar font types for the text. This brings the
magazine together as it all fits in the conventions that you would expect from that
particular type of genre.
• The images also link the magazine together as they will be of artists which are all of the
same genre so it fits together and they will have similar information on the artists for
example interviews.
