3. CONGENITAL GINGIVAL GRANULAR CELL TUMOR
A pedunculated growth on the anterior maxilla or mandible of
newborns that is composed of granular cells.
The congenital gingival granular cell tumor is also known as:
1. Congenital epulis of the newborn
2. Congenital granular cell epulis
4. An infant with a pedunculated,
multilobular lesion of the anterior
alveolar ridge.
Tissue of origin is still
controversial.
5. CLINICAL FEATURES
1. Lesions are found only in newborn
2. Lesions mostly occur in anterior maxilla and occasionally
lesions are found in the anterior mandible
3. Occurrence : Females > Males
4. Lesions are pedunculated, originating from crest of
alveolar ridge
5. Texture: Smooth surface
6. Size: several cm in diameter(1-9)
7. Colour: Pink
6. Hematoxylin and Eosin (H and E)
stained section show uniform
pattern of granular cells with
outer surface of atrophic
stratified squamous epithelium
HISTOPATHOLOGY
8. • Lesion is composed of sheets of large cells with a
granular cytoplasm and vascular, noncollagenous
stroma.
• Lesions contain autophagic vacuoles
• Lesions are negative for S-100 protein
