2. GUIDANCE
This template PowerPoint presentation includes all the
relevant elements you need to cover in your Music Video
Assignment
It is suggested you save this PP in a different name and
share it with your group so you always have a copy – some
sections require you to delete the information on the slide
and replace with your own work
Add more pages to each section where necessary [you
should be doing this!]
Add visuals as you see necessary
This document will be added to as you progress through the
pre-production phase.
Delete this slide when complete
4. RESEARCH & IDEA
GENERATION
Select a song/track that you like [or don’t like!]
Aitch – Miss me with it.
Generate three ideas for music videos employing styles,
techniques and conventions that we have looked at in
previous sessions. Explore how you could interpret the
song differently using different methods
You can add any extra info you think is relevant, images,
mind maps, etc
For quick mind maps you could use bubbl.us to generate
these
5. RESEARCH
Watch a selection of videos to get your ideas started,
make note of a minimum of 5 – add extra slides,
screenshot the video and in bullet point note down info
in terms of camera, editing, art design, performance, etc
and how this might link to your production
Hint!
You’ve already done this in
your case study, so you can
summarise that here where
relevant
6. MISS ME WITH IT
- AITCH
The camera work in this music video is very smooth, the
shots used in this music video are still, stable and clear.
The visual effects in this music video are quite distorting,
this is something that can link this video to my music
video because I am choosing to add a few distorting
effects into mine.
The editing in this video is very fast, there is a lot of
jump cuts to different shots, there is also a wide amount
of flashing images placed when the bass has hit. This is
another thing I can link to my project because this is the
style of the grime genre and I want to follow this editing
style.
7. TRUST ME
- AITCH
The camera shots and movement in this music video are
very clear, the shots used in this music video include
slow motion clips, fast motion and very still shots. The
style of these shots in the music video is very well
produced, the video mixes with different speeds through
out. This is something I can adapt into my project, I
would like to include some slow/fast motion clips. The
visual effects in this video are not as distorting and over
the top as the artists other videos, this seemed to be a
very professional music video.
The editing in this video is mixed with a fast and slow
pace, as the song slows down the videos go into slow
motion then when the pace increases the speed of the
clips start to rise up. I would like to include this in my
editing because I think it can create a sense of intensity
for the viewers, the intensity will rise up for the viewers
ad the song goes along.
8. EL DIABLO –
MACHINE GUN
KELLY
The camera work and visual shots in this music video are
very unusual, MGK had camera shots right up close to his
face, long distance shots & shots showing is reflection
on a car tire. I would like to include some of these shots
in my music video because it means I can experiment
with more camera angles that I could use for other
projects.
The editing in this music video is a very popular style,
this editing style is most used in sound cloud rappers
videos. The style shows changes of colour in the sky, 3d
animations & RGB effects. I will be using similar effects
like this in my music video because I have experience
creating these visual effects. It will be easy for me to
include these.
9. POTENTIAL SONGS

TECHNIQUES
TRACKING OBJECT CAMERA MOVEMENT ( the camera
focuses and track an object to keep it centered whilst the
camera is moving )
DISORTED VISUAL EFFECTS ( add underwater effects,
fisheye effects, colour changing effects to create a
distortion clip )
CLOSE UP FACE CAMERA SHOTS
DISTORTED VISUAL EFFECTS
STABLE AND SMOOTH CAMERA MOVEMENT
GREEN SCREEN
SLOW/FAST MOTION FOOTAGE
KHROMA KEY COLOUR CHANGES (SKY COLOUR CHANGE)
11. CONVENTIONS YOU
PLAN TO USE
ENTORAGE BACKROUND FOOTAGE
FAST PANNING CAMERA SHOTS
FAST JUMPCUTS WHEN EDITING
FILMING IN DARK LOCATIONS
LIGHTS FLASHING ON AND OFF TO CREATE FLASHING
EFFECT
FLASHING IMAGES WHEN THE BASS HITS OR WHEN THE
SONG CHANGES PACE
FOOTAGE WHEN DRIVING IN A CAR (TYPICAL GRIME
CAMERA SHOT)
13. SUMMARY
5 opportunities of your ideas
Film footage in the car with my go pro, people sat in the
seats behind helping me with the song.
Film clips with professional lighting in front of me with
one shot, then another shot with it behind me, with these
2 shots I will edit it so it goes back and fourth between
the two.
Film footage with a group of friends behind me acting
like they are hyping up the song (entourage shot –
classically used in grime videos)
Single shots of me walking down a path, one at daytime
and one at night
Edit visually distorting effects into my music video to add
some more creativity.
14. SUMMARY
5 restrictions to your ideas
I will not be allowed to include include any indecent
footage that may be a risk to mine or someone else's
safety.
I will not be allowed to use any offensive footage such as
inappropriate hand gestures in my music video.
If I am filming in a moving vehicle I will not be allowed to
drive stupidly, drive sensibly.
No filming near a river or in a nightclub/party where
people in the background have not given me permission
to use them in the final film.
I will not use a huge amount of footage to edit, I wont
film more than a few needed shots so I do not waste time
and fall behind my deadline by editing for too long.
15. FINAL IDEA –
ARTIST/TITLE/INFO
Name of track / name of artist
MISS ME WITH IT - AITCH
Brief biographical background
Aitch is a 19 year old rapper from north Manchester,
Miss me with it was the song that has the most views on
his YouTube channel and kick started his career, he was
making songs for only 2 years before this song.
Links to other artists
Aitch has links to other artists such as Ed Sheeran,
Stormzy & JayKae
Genre info
GRIME / HIP HOP
16. FINAL IDEA – TRACK
SUMMARY
Summary/analysis of track [consider meaning, content,
duration, pace and style of the song]
The meaning behind my selected song (MISS ME WITH IT)
is to show that you shouldn't’t let people tell you what
you can or can not do. The content in this music video is
clips of the artist life and shows how he makes songs
and films his videos, all of these clips have been put
together to go with the song. The duration of this music
video was 3 minutes, a standard length for a music
video. The pace of the song is really intense, it does’t
slow down it only increases in speed. The style of this
music video was like any other grime video, showing off
their lifestyle and showing how they make and spend
money on. The style of the song is perfect if you’re into
hard hitting bass and fast flows.
17. FINAL IDEA – YOUR IDEA
Your creative concept/video synopsis [describe your
interpretation, use of imagery or narrative, genre
conventions, etc]
For my music video my interpretation will be my friend
who has agreed to be in the music video lip syncing the
song with other people in the background, my use of
imagery in my music video will have shots set mostly at
the time when its dark, I will also film when its day so I
can flick between the night and day shots using fast
jump cuts.
I will
19. GUIDANCE:
PRE-PRODUCTION
ASSESSMENT
You need to assess the viability of your production and
investigate what is required to enable you to make your
music video
Much of this task is hypothetical, which means you will
need to investigate standard costings for such a
production and apply these to your planned production
considering which equipment you would need and
resources, etc
Resources to support this are in the Pre-production
assessment folder on Blackboard
Delete the questions on each slide and insert your
responses
20. TITLE OF
PRODUCTION/PRODUCTI
ON OUTLINE
Summary of intended production
Detail here what you are going to make and the intended
outcome
Detailed breakdown of the music track chosen and your
interpretation of it [remember the questions in the
workbook, e.g. pace/mood/tone/structure]
Specific outline your intended technical/equipment
requirements
Include any details that you think [you could use material
from your pitch]
21. LOCATIONS
You need to identify locations and plan a recce.
What are the limitations and risks, eg distance, access, cost,
weather? How will you manage this?
OUTSIDE IN A ALLEYWAY (clear weather, free access, I will
manage this by going to my nearest street)
FIELD (clear weather, free access, I will manage this by going
onto the nearest public field)
GARAGE (clear weather, dark, free access, I will manage
filming this shot by going to the area on my street where
my garage is)
LONG PATH (clear weather, day time, free access, I will
manage to film this shot because I have a long path near
where I live so I can go there)
INSIDE WITH A WHITE WALL FOR A BACKGROUND
22. EQUIPMENT
What do you need? E.g. equipment, resources? Mostly
from college, but who do you need to speak to get this
kit? What is available? When?
Look at equipment hire places, etc
CAMERA (CANNON 700D)
LIGHTING (SOFTBOX LIGHTING)
MICROPHONE (RODE MIC PODCASTER)
CAMERA LENSES
MACBOOK PRO (FINAL CUT PRO)
23. FACILITIES
Where will you edit your video? Do you need any other
specialist facilities…?
I will edit my music video at home, I own an apple mac
and have access to Final Cut Pro and Adobe After effects.
I will not need any other specialist facilities because I
have access to all the places I need to film. I keep my
equipment in one room in my house so I will be able to
take what I need when I require it.
I will also edit in college during lessons and free periods
if I feel I need to speed up the process, I will bring my
editing equipment into college each day.
24. PERSONNEL
CREW: What is you team? Who is in it? What are each team
members strengths/weaknesses? When are they available?
In my team I have 5 friends who have agreed to help me
with my music video, my teams strengths are that we
understand the same type of music and music video styles,
a weakness in my team is that they have never performed in
front of a camera before.
CAST: Do you need any external performers? When are they
available? Cost implications? Will you have to feed them?
Transport them?
I do not need any external performers, I already have a plan
on who is going to be in my music video and who will be the
performers.
Other personnel? Is anyone else helping you?
Yes I have other people helping me, only with the filming
25. PROPS/COSTUME/ETC
The costumes I need for this music video are specifically
tracksuits, I chose tracksuits as my main costume
because they fit the genres fashion sense, in most grime
uk rap videos the artists and other backup actors can be
seen wearing mainly tracksuits. This is a convention from
other grime music videos. The tracksuits are also a good
choice because of the price range and the popularity, they
do not have a very high price range and each one of my
chosen actors have some sort of black/grey tracksuit
clothing to use for this music video.
I will not be in need of any specific props for this music
video, I do not need to act anything out with a fake
object, this music video is purely lip syncing and
professionally edited like the majority of high production
grime videos.
27. PRE-PRODUCTION:
VISUAL PLANNING
This section is concerned with the visual planning of your
music video
You should use this section to develop the sequencing or
your video, establish the relationship between the visuals
and the track itself and create a structure for you to
follow when filming
It is important that you ‘pre-visualise’ the video before
you make it; it will make filming and production a more
streamlined process
The following tasks are part of your visual planning
Pre-visualisation and concept boards
Storyboarding
Shot list
28. PRE-
VISUALISATION/CONCEP
T BOARDS
Tool for exploring the direction and visuals
Provides inspiration and information for the “look & feel”
Presents key moments in your video
A means to sketch/plan ideas
Information on colour/lighting
Defining the “mise-en-scene”
Include as much here as you like, but keep it relevant to the
production, the following slides have been left blank for you
to approach in your own way, add more as you need to
Extension suggestion: edit a short sequence of clips that
have inspired or influenced your video [similar to this:

hunger-games-might-be-better-than-the-real-movie]
30. PLAN FOR MUSIC VIDEO
BEFORE FILMING – the day before I am going to start
filming I will collect and set up all the equipment that I
need so that I can be organized for filming the next day.
DAY 1– on the first day of filming I am going to film my
night shots, I will set up my lighting outside in my
garage then film my actor lip syncing the song.
DAY 2 – for my second day of filming I will shoot my
daytime shots, I will not need any professional lighting
for these shots because I will be filming on the field & in
the street.
DAY 3 – on my 3rd day of production I will start editing
my shots together, I will edit on Final Cut Pro
DAY 4 – on day 4 I will continue editing my music video, I
will finish my editing this day too.
31. RIP-O-MATIC
You should also construct a 15-20second Rip-o-matic
test reel using existing footage to convey the type of
video you want to make
32. STRUCTURAL
BREAKDOWN
[Chorus]
I ain't coming to the
shubz if there ain't
no birds, you best miss
me with it
You don't know 'bout
flows if you don't like
Aitch, you can't miss
these lyrics
I say what I like and you
can't say nout, no way,
you can't diss my image
Fam, I work twice as
hard as them, and I ain't
gonna stop 'til the
whole ting's finished
My music video is going to begin
with my group of actors walking
down a path before the lyrics
start playing, when the first
lyrics hit the song, the video is
going to pan through all of the
shots at a fast rate.
The chorus section will be
different to the separate verses,
the visuals during the chorus
will be more powerful and have
more actors in them, they will
also be presented to be at a high
speed when shown in the music
video, especially at the
beginning of the song as this is
the chance for the viewers to get
33. STRUCTURAL
BREAKDOWN
[Verse 1]
No worries, I'll do it again, it's light work
Like "Aitch, don't do it them"
But right now, I got my left hand glued to the pen
So when I tie my lace, I got blue on my creps
Yo, I'm through with the mess
I got two young sisters, I do it for them
So, inspiration gets into my head
So when the girls grow up, they get the biggest of
cheques (Ching)
Fuck-fuck it, I said it, I'm sick and I'm ready
Pull it, it's deaded, I'll rip it, I'm Shelly
Mumsy, I said that you'll see me on telly
Trust me, I get it, I'm overly heavy
Semi confused, I think that it's funny
They didn't shed light so I made it sunny
Done it myself, I'm hungry for the money
She didn't like me now she say she love me
I don't know nuttin' 'bout shambles
Watch how I move when the mic gets handled
Overtime, the next set gets cancelled
Overdrive, my head top's too mangled
Turn WhYJay's studio sideways
I don't fuck up, the sound gets tun up
The mic gets bruk up on sight when I spray
So I advise you don't slide in my way
Vodka with the lemon and lime, I'm nice
Love weekends, Friday's my day
I'm the best so believe what I say
Heaviest shit in the scene, don't know 'bout
lightweight
When my first verse starts the
speed of the visuals in my video
will start to speed up, the shots of
my night and day visuals will start
to switch at a rapid rate, I will also
use visual effects during this part
of the song.
In the first verse I will get through
most of my shots so by the time
the song reaches its second verse
the viewers will know the scenery
and surroundings that are
presented in this music video. The
pace and rhythm of this music
video will start to change slower
when at a certain point (the
highlighted section) when this
34. STRUCTURAL
BREAKDOWN
[Verse 2]
Tryna get a milli in the bank
Got plans, I ain't tryna get dippy with a shank
No way, don't wanna be sitting in a van
Bare stress in my head, like, this shit, is it in the
plan?
Woah, killing every rhythm with a bang
Gyal's tryna send piccies of her titties to the
gang (Ahh)
Swear man just catch a buzz
If you're doubting us then you're catching dust
Man's skrrting off, you're not catchin' us
You're man than slow fam, I'm lapping up
All them older man used to laugh at us
But the jokes on you 'cause I'm wrapping up
Certain MC's need to pack their stuff
'Cause they're rapping nuff but they're acting up
When I step inside, I show bags of love
And for my certi dons, I got bags of trust (Uh)
Man 1,2 step when I'm in a shubz
Stepped up levz, man best get picking up
Mess up the decks, I'm blessed, still chillin' cuz
('Cause I'm blessed, still chillin' cuz)
Get speedy on dubs, it's easy enough
I'm easily freezing, I'm greazy, it's nuts
She wanna tease me, just leave me, you're
fucked
You're creeping, it's creepy, I'm leaving you love
After when the chorus plays after
my first verse my song will move on
to verse 2, when my second verse
hits my music video I will continue
to use the same speed and rhythm
that was used when editing the
video during the first verse, in this
specific verse the flow of the lyrics
starts to slow down (at the
highlighted point) when the music
video approaches this point of the
song I will slow down the speed
that my visuals switch at it to match
the slow flow and rhythm.
When this section ends I will
eventually edit back to the original
pace of speeding up my clips.
35. STORYBOARDING
Your storyboard should bring your idea to life
Provide an idea of the sequencing of you video
Provides a basis for production
Suggested online storyboard creators are:
https://www.storyboardthat.com
http://www.pixton.com [very complicated]
http://www.storyjumper.com [allows you to insert your own images]
Alternatively, hand draw or photograph your storyboard and
scan or copy to insert it onto your slides
There are lots of tips collected together on Blackboard!
36. STORYBOARD
For my opening shot I want the actors walking down a
path with the man actor in front. This shot is called a
long distance shot showing people walking from a
distance
After the opening shot I then want it to transition
into a shot with the main actor lip syncing with
other actors around him like it is shown in this
shot by Stormzy’s music video.
After the first lip sync shot I will then show my
day and night shots, when these are shown they
are going to be showing backwards and forward
between the two.
After I have shown my day and night shots I will also include a
shot of my actor indoors, I felt I should have an indoor shot
because the rest of my shots seem to be outside, I will include
this shot when the flow gets slower and is about to change.
When on my second verse I will open it by using
a shot filmed in a field with my background
actors surrounding my main actor.
For my final shot I will show a low angled shot of
the actor backing away from the camera, after
my actor has backed away the camera will slowly
pan to the sky then fade out.

38. SHOT LIST
Your shot list should contain the sequential breakdown
of what you need to shoot for your video
It should work in partnership with your storyboard
It will be your working document when you film
It should contain the shot number, scene number, shot
description, framing and action you will see
It should also have information on performers in the
scene and other props, etc
Shot list template is on Blackboard in the pre-production
folder.
41. PRODUCTION GROUP
INFO
Include names, contact info, and defined roles at
difference stages of production, using a table is
suggested
NAME ROLE CONTACT INFO
Mqhele Ndebele Main Actor 07985216981
Macaulay Lee Background
actor
07465219571
Arbaaz
Mahmood
Background
actor

42. LOCATION INFORMATION
Information and images of your location[s] for filming
You should have address details, clearance/premissions
for filming, recce photos and floorplans [including
camera, equipment and cast/crew layouts]
Where possible, have a plan B fallback location option
Assess each location for any issues and suggest
solutions
43. LOCATIONS
GARAGE – to film my most important close up shots with professional
lighting
INDOORS – to film in my bedroom so that the shots are being mixed
around with indoors and outdoors.
STREET CORNERS – this is so I can film shots that would make the video
seem more grimy like other grime videos.
FIELD WITH A LONG PATH – to film a single shot of my actors walking
down he path and walking on the field whilst lip syncing the song.
44. RISK ASSESSMENT
Risk Assess each separate filming location using the
table in the camera H&S PP on Bb as a staring point
Completing a generic filming assessment would be a
start, then you can add specialist/site specific risks as
you progress your production
Remember, a Risk Assessment is an ongoing document,
you should evaluate if anything changes in production
and when you put control measures in place
You should add the table to each call sheet for each
location
45. RISK ASSESSMENT
WHAT COULD GO WRONG? HOW CAN THIS BE
AVOIDED?
Equipment could get damaged. Take special care of your equipment, do not carry
without a case or protective gear.
Actors could get injured when
filming.
Do not attempt special stunts, stay on the ground and
be clear of your surroundings.
46. CONTINGENCY
PLANNING
Things go wrong
Your contingency plan is there to give you a backup or to
minimise the effect on production
You should consider the following areas: Technical,
Location, Personnel and Organisational areas [about 5
potential issues for each]
Use the form in pre-production folder on Blackboard
48. PRODUCTION
SCHEDULE
Provide an outline of what you will do on which days
during production
You should broadly plan to the following structure:
- 2 weeks pre-production
- 1 week filming [plan for up to 2 days]
- 2 weeks editing [essentially 2 days for every day you
filmed]
50. CLEARANCE AND
PERMISSIONS
Any place you film and anyone you use in the filming of
your video must have a completed form
Blank forms are on Blackboard for you to complete and
insert here
53. PRODUCTION
RECORD/LOG
Keep track your filming and production work with the
camera here
You could add stills of your work with annotations
You should include any specific details about how your
filming went and what you did on set to enable you to
complete the work
You should include Call Sheets and relevant production
documents here
54. CALL SHEETS
This links with your schedule
Complete a call sheet for each production activity
Forms are on Blackboard
