This template PowerPoint presentation
includes all the relevant elements you
need to cover in your Music Video
Assignment
It is suggested you save this PP in a
different name and share it with your
group so you always have a copy –
some sections require you to delete
the information on the slide and
replace with your own work
Add more pages to each section
where necessary [you should be doing
this!]
Add visuals as you see necessary
This document will be added to as you
progress through the pre-production
phase.
Delete this slide when complete
4. RESEARCH & IDEA
GENERATION
Select a song/track that you like [or don’t like!]
Generate three ideas for music videos
employing styles, techniques and conventions
that we have looked at in previous sessions.
Explore how you could interpret the song
differently using different methods
You can add any extra info you think is
relevant, images, mind maps, etc
For quick mind maps you could use bubbl.us
to generate these
5. GIN N JUICE (IDEA 1)
Have a few friends round to both help record and act in
the music video
Use props in the video that fit with what the lyrics
mention
Shoot inside the house and have some shots outside
while it is dark
(If I can find a wig) have someone in a women's wig
Some camera tricks involving moving the camera into the
wall before bringing it out to another wall, or throwing
something at the camera, covering it, before it switches
to another scene
Use larger props such as a car or hot tub to embrace
certain scenes
6. GIN N JUICE (IDEA 2)
Simulate a house party
Need a group of people to be in the video for some video
clips
Fast camera movements
Maybe have some shots filmed in the college so there is
a wider range of people to be used in the video
Have props at hand for the different locations so the
video shares the same these as the song
7. RESEARCH
Watch a selection of videos to get your ideas started,
make note of a minimum of 5 – add extra slides,
screenshot the video and in bullet point note down info
in terms of camera, editing, art design, performance, etc
and how this might link to your production
Hint!
You’ve already done this in
your case study, so you can
summarise that here where
relevant
8. EMINEM’S MUSIC VIDEO’S
I used Eminem when it came to researching
music video’s. Each of the videos I chose had
unique features to give me a range of ideas
that I could potentially implement into my own
video. He would use lots of different camera
techniques such as gradually moving the
camera lower to the floor until it ends up at the
ceiling of another room still gradually moving
down. Or used editing to create a portal effect
the allowed him to go from one place to
another seamlessly. He would use a range of
camera angles to give off the right effect such
as making him seem superior to everyone else.
Or bring other art forms into his music videos
such as the comic effect to make it unique to
9. Using a different art style
such as a comic book
(Without Me)
Low Angle shot (My
Name Is)
High Angle Shot
(Stan)
Seamless Transitions using either
editing or camera work (Rap
God)
10. POTENTIAL SONGS
Gin N Juice – Snoop Dogg (My Chosen
Song)
Lose Yourself – Eminem
I Need A Doctor – Dr Dre
Harness Your Hopes – Pavement
Express Yourself – N.W.A
11. POTENTIAL TECHNIQUES
Using multiple cameras in order to get video
shots from multiple angles (EG Using a phone
or multiple phones and a DSLR)
Try implement some camera tricks EG fast
movement to create a blur that then cuts to a
different scene or move the camera into the
wall, ceiling or floor to then lift the camera
back up in another location
Use effects in editing to create blur in areas or
a wabble effect
Quick snaps where the color changes in the
video (inverted for example) to add a unique
style
12. CONVENTIONS YOU PLAN TO
USE
low angle shots to show superiority
High angle shots as a way to get a group
of people into the shot visibly
Rapping into the camera to make the
audience feel like its directed at them
Embrace the wealth side of thing in the
music video
13. MIND MAP OF IDEAS
[SUMMARY OF IDEAS]
Use multiple locations and props to film
different scenes In the music video
Use a range of camera tricks to make some
scenes transition smoothly
Try different tactics in editing to embrace
certain scenes
Use an appropriate selection of camera angles
so it fits the genre of music
14. SUMMARY
5 opportunities of your ideas
1. Further develop my video editing skill’s
2. Getting better at managing other people on set
3. Build on my confidence to be Infront of a camera
4. Get better with camera skills such as appropriate
camera angle
5. The chance to embrace my creativity in video
15. SUMMARY
5 restrictions to your ideas
1. What props I do and don’t have access to
2. What I can appropriately record with some of the song
lyrics
3. The props I can get with a very restricted budget
4. Clothing such as jewelry that’s standard in most rap
videos
5. Appropriate locations might not be accessible
16. FINAL IDEA –
ARTIST/TITLE/INFO
Name of track / name of artist: Gin N Juice – Snoop Dogg
Brief biographical background: Snoop Dogg grew up in
Long Beach California and grew to fame in the 1990’s
with his Gangster Rap. While Snoop Dogg came to fame,
he was also constantly in and out of court for being
involved in a drive by shooting which resulted in
constant delays of his Albums. He has been involved in
many collaborations with other artists with his first being
Dr Dre who helped him rise to the phenomenon he is
today. Snoop Dogg is one of the biggest faces to
represent to West Coast HipHop culture.
Links to other artists: Snoop Dogg doesn’t feature any
other artists in the song I chose, however Snoop Dogg
has done many collaborations with other artists
throughout his music career such as: Dr Dre and 2 Pac
Genre info: Gangster Rap, Westcoast Rap, HipHop
17. FINAL IDEA – TRACK
SUMMARY
Summary/analysis of track [consider meaning,
content, duration, pace and style of the song]
The idea of Gin N Juice it to show what the
more laid-back side of the streets (Also
referred to as the hood) are. Often people think
the streets is where there is constant gun
violence, threats, drug dealing and regular
police chases. While thing like that still occur
on the streets its not as common as people
may believe it to be. And they still like to sit
back and have a drink with some friends on the
occasion.
18. FINAL IDEA – YOUR IDEA
Your creative concept/video synopsis [describe your
interpretation, use of imagery or narrative, genre
conventions, etc]
I plan to quickly go between different scenes for my
video. Although this might mean lots of little clips have
to then get put together inline with the song, I think it
will work really well together. For example the first line
‘With so much drama in the L-B-C’ will have me pointing
towards California on a map since we aren’t based in
California, then the next line ‘It's kind of hard bein' Snoop
D-O-double-G’ goes on to a scene that’s relevant to
Snoop Dogg, but it will work as each scene will
appropriately transition to the next with each scene
featuring something appropriate to that line. The chorus
will also likely repeat the same clip or have a similar
style.

E:
PRE-
PRODUCT
ION
ASSESSM
ENT
You need to assess the viability of your production and
investigate what is required to enable you to make your
music video
Much of this task is hypothetical, which means you will
need to investigate standard costings for such a
production and apply these to your planned production
considering which equipment you would need and
resources, etc
Resources to support this are in the Pre-production
assessment folder on Blackboard
Delete the questions on each slide and insert your
responses
21. TITLE OF
PRODUCTION/PRODUC
TION OUTLINE
Summary of intended production
Detail here what you are going to
make and the intended outcome
Detailed breakdown of the music
track chosen and your interpretation
of it [remember the questions in the
workbook, e.g.
pace/mood/tone/structure]
Specific outline your intended
technical/equipment requirements
Include any details that you think
[you could use material from your
pitch]
22. LOCATIONS
You need to identify locations and plan a recce.
What are the limitations and risks, eg distance, access,
cost, weather? How will you manage this?
I plan to shoot different shots at both my parents house
which shouldn’t introduce any problems. Outdoor shots
will need to be shot while its dark which is a bit easier
now as daylight doesn’t last as long, however I still need
to manage the timings as to what needs to be filmed
outdoors. Some shots will also need to be done around
Knaresborough high street at nigh which means
organizing an appropriate time for me and a few other to
meet while its dark and still safe to be out at that time.
Distance is not so much an issue as everything I need is
within short walking distance for me and everyone who
would be involved.
23. EQUIPMENT
What do you need? E.g. equipment, resources? Mostly from
college, but who do you need to speak to get this kit? What
is available? When?
Look at equipment hire places, etc
I don’t have the budget to hire anything so I will be using
private property I have access too such as my house and
public property where there is no issue with me being
around those locations.
I will be mostly using equipment I can already get my hands
on. For example, I have a modern phone camera as well as a
modern DSLR which could give me more creative freedom
with the customisation it offers. I also have different lens as
well as a tripod for the DSLR so the camera wont wobble
during filming. There will also be a collection of different
props that will be used for a couple seconds each through
24. FACILITIES
Where will you edit your video? Do you need any other
specialist facilities…?
I don’t need access to anything extra to what I
already have. I have access to the school
computers for when I have time to edit in
school. And I also have access to applications
such as Premier Pro at home so I don’t have to
worry about what I get done at what location, I
can instead just do whatever I feel like doing at
that time which reduces whatever time
management stress that could occur.
25. PERSONNEL
CREW: What is you team? Who is in it? What are each
team members strengths/weaknesses? When are they
available?
CAST: Do you need any external performers? When are
they available? Cost implications? Will you have to feed
them? Transport them?
Other personnel? Is anyone else helping you?
26. PERSONNEL
CREW: I plan to have either one or two friends round to
help me filming some of the parts at my mums house
and outside, I might also borrow my older sister at some
points depending if I ever feel I need people in the
background at any point
CAST: I plan to use some of the people I mentioned in
the crew to come on and out of some video clips where I
might be able to use the tripod, so no one needs to hold
the camera at some points
I believe that I will manage with the handful of people
I've asked to help me for the little bits I can't do with just
myself
27. PROPS/COSTUME/ETC
I don’t think we will need to do much with the
clothing. Typically, the style of clothing in
HipHop videos will be trainers, jeans and
maybe a baggy top, Sports top or jumper. And
from an accessories point of view, they will
often wear a cap and jewelry such as chains,
rings and a watch. So, it won't require much
change to what we would usually wear when
filming the video, it will instead just be worth
looking round for a cheap chain or something
to wear during the filming of the video
29. PRE-PRODUCTION:
VISUAL PLANNING
This section is concerned with the visual planning of your
music video
You should use this section to develop the sequencing or your
video, establish the relationship between the visuals and the
track itself and create a structure for you to follow when
filming
It is important that you ‘pre-visualise’ the video before you
make it; it will make filming and production a more
streamlined process
The following tasks are part of your visual planning
Pre-visualisation and concept boards
Storyboarding
Shot list
30. PRE-
VISUALISATION/CONC
EPT BOARDS
Tool for exploring the direction and visuals
Provides inspiration and information for the “look & feel”
Presents key moments in your video
A means to sketch/plan ideas
Information on colour/lighting
Defining the “mise-en-scene”
Include as much here as you like, but keep it relevant to the
production, the following slides have been left blank for you to
approach in your own way, add more as you need to
Extension suggestion: edit a short sequence of clips that have
inspired or influenced your video [similar to this:

31. I will stand Infront of a
map showing western
USA in which I will point
to LBC
The camera will move
towards a ‘Snoopy’
plushie wearing Ray bans
Mid way through saying
the line I will then change,
facing another camera
I will walk towards the 2nd
camera slowly
Pickup some different
spirits from the kitchen
floor and move them to
the kitchen counter
Camera zooms in a little
while I say this line
32. People start to pick up
some shots as I point at a
clock showing 2am
I will go outside and show
a picture of no cars on the
drive while it is dark
outside
I will be outside the living room door
with a worried face as I try to keep the
door shut as someone else fights
against me on the other side of the
door trying to open it
The same scene will continue but
part way through me saying the
line it will show a short clip of me
against the door wiping the sweat
off my head
I will be leaning against
the kitchen surface saying
the line
A scene of me and a
couple friends behind me
will hold some condom
wrappers
33. It will go to my bedroom
as I switch off the light
and close the door behind
the camera
The camera will be moved to my
room with low light as I say this
line Me and someone else will say
this line with me answering the
question ‘but what?’
1. It goes to me
sprinkling tea onto
rolling paper
It goes from me pointing
up to me pushing
someone over before
pulling out the tea joint
I will walkdown
Knaresborough high-
street with a low camera
shot with some mates
I will sip on a drink
(something like Fanta) I
will then lay back on the
sofa with some mates
34. We will have some money
in our hands on the sofa
as I say the lines
Following the same
procedure as line 20
Repeat of 17
I will sip on Fanta again
while lying back in a hot
tub
I will say the lines with
£20 notes floating in the
hot tub water
Continue with line 23
35. Pull out a bottle of gin
onto the kitchen surface
People place cups on the surface,
I grab a note from someone, but
they snatch it back, Camera
changes to another angle as I say
the line
Someone tries to grab a
glass from the side but I
slap there hand
I will shrug at the camera
saying the line
Use a camera trick to
switch to the snoopy
plushie with headphones
on and Spotify
I then stand behind the
plushie and say the lines
36. The camera is outside the
door as I walk out the
door
There is a shot of me
stumbling through the
streets (maybe increase
video speed in premier)
Shot of someone with me as I
say this line before
pretending to kiss (don’t get
close to mouth!?!?!?!?!?)
Show a shot of someone
being angry I took there
lady
I will throw some ice
cubes, then cut to another
shot of me saying the 2nd
half of the line
Outside, I will say these
lines with the camera at a
low (ish) angle
37. I will turn around where
another camera is
recording and say these
lines
I will then turn back 90
degrease where a camera
is at eye level when I say
these lines
Repeat 17
Repeat 18 Repeat 19 Repeat 20
38. Repeat 21 Repeat 22 Repeat 23
Repeat 24 I say the line into the
camera as I rotate my
figures
The shot then goes to me opening
the door where someone lifts
some liquor bottles (camera
outside the door)
39. The shot then changes to the camera
inside as someone drops the liquor
bottles and pulls out a big tea joint
from there pocket and the camera
shifts to me as in shock
The shot then goes to someone lighting
the tea joint behind me outside as I say
the line with an empty glass and a
wobble effect can be added in editing
to suggest ‘being drunk’
I place the glass down on
the kitchen surface then
sit down somewhere
looking ill
Lift the bottle and tea
join, put them back on the
counter than fall
backwards
The camera goes above
my head with me on the
floor saying the line
Excited, I get back up and
approach someone as
they hand over a rubber
40. Camera on my face, rip
open the packet
Camera goes to me
shutting the bedroom
door with more rubbers
as I point up again
Inside my bedroom lying
in bed, I will shrug saying
the lines
I will then get back out of
bed and walk away
I open the bedroom door
and walk out
Repeat 39
42. 1. Repeat 46 This time I will be walking
down the middle of the
street with a couple
friends
With glasses in our hands, we will
walk away from the camera
before turning our heads back
and saying ‘Biatch’
Someone will film me up
close saying this line with
money in my hand
Following the same
routine as 70
The camera will keep
walking back whereas I
stay still and say the line
43. Keep saying the line but it
will cut to us saying
‘Biatch’ in a group quickly
Repeat 70 but from a
distance
I will point up and the camera
will follow by pointing up as it
gradually goes black with
some brief credits and details
44. RIP-O-MATIC
You should also construct a 15-20second Rip-o-matic
test reel using existing footage to convey the type of
video you want to make
45. STRUCTU
RAL
BREAKDO
WN
Breakdown your track into it basic sections [e.g.
intro, verse, chorus, verse, etc] and apply broad
visual ideas to each section
You can use this as the master template for your
production, then add more shots to each section
when you develop your full visual plan
You should create a slide showing all the sections
of the song, then add a slide for each section with
timings, lyrics, what happens and details on
specific shots
You could storyboard and shot list each section
as you go, to break up the process.
46. STORYBOAR
DING
Your storyboard should bring your idea to
life
Provide an idea of the sequencing of you
video
Provides a basis for production
Suggested online storyboard creators are:
https://www.storyboardthat.com
http://www.pixton.com [very
complicated]
http://www.storyjumper.com [allows you
to insert your own images]
Alternatively, hand draw or photograph
your storyboard and scan or copy to insert
it onto your slides
There are lots of tips collected together on
Blackboard!
47. SHOT
LIST
Your shot list should contain the
sequential breakdown of what you
need to shoot for your video
It should work in partnership with
your storyboard
It will be your working document
when you film
It should contain the shot number,
scene number, shot description,
framing and action you will see
It should also have information on
performers in the scene and other
props, etc
Shot list template is on Blackboard
in the pre-production folder.
49. PRODUCTION GROUP INFO
Include names, contact info, and defined roles at
difference stages of production, using a table is
suggested
Flynn Westwood-Bryant: Camera Work & Acting (07484
123118)
Alex Richardson: Camera Work & Acting (07341 440147)
50. LOCATION
INFORMAT
ION
Information and images of your
location[s] for filming
You should have address details,
clearance/premissions for filming,
recce photos and floorplans
[including camera, equipment and
cast/crew layouts]
Where possible, have a plan B
fallback location option
Assess each location for any issues
and suggest solutions
52. RISK
ASSESSM
ENT
Risk Assess each separate filming
location using the table in the
camera H&S PP on Bb as a staring
point
Completing a generic filming
assessment would be a start, then
you can add specialist/site specific
risks as you progress your
production
Remember, a Risk Assessment is an
ongoing document, you should
evaluate if anything changes in
production and when you put
control measures in place
You should add the table to each
call sheet for each location
53. RISK ASSESSMENT
There’s dangers of damaging equipment such as the
tripod and camera during transportation around
knaresborough
Shooting in areas such as the middle of the street could
lead to an incident involving a moving vehicle
Recording around liquids may lead to electrical damage
which may lead to electric shocks
Dangers with flammable objects such as a lighter or
match could potentially light unintended objects on fire
54. CONTINGENCY
PLANNING
Things go wrong
Your contingency plan is there to give you a
backup or to minimise the effect on
production
You should consider the following areas:
Technical, Location, Personnel and
Organisational areas [about 5 potential issues
for each]
Use the form in pre-production folder on
Blackboard
56. PRODUCTION SCHEDULE
Your schedule should budget a total of 10 hours for
production, that is for the filming and editing of your
project.
You should plan when you’re filming and how you intend
to use the in class days on your timetable/class schedule
57. SCHEDULE
Spend an evening shooting shots that involve others
Spend another evening shooting solo shots
Spend both college time and free time at home editing
the video
Reserve time for reshoots if the shot did not come out as
intended
58. CLEARANCE AND
PERMISSIONS
Any place you film and anyone you use in the
filming of your video must have a completed form
Blank forms are available for you to complete and
insert here, you can also create your own
