E
This template PowerPoint presentation
includes all the relevant elements you
need to cover in your Music Video
Assignment
It is suggested you save this PP in a
different name â some sections
require you to delete the information
on the slide and replace with your own
work
Add more pages to each section
where necessary [you should be doing
this!]
Add visuals as you see necessary
This document will be added to as you
progress through the pre-production
phase.
The biggest tip is that if you say you
want to do something, or a
techniques, etc, say WHY you have
chosen to do this. Always EXPLAIN
your thinking.
Delete this slide when complete
4. RESEARCH & IDEA
GENERATION
Select a song/track that you like [or donât like!]
Generate three ideas for music videos
employing styles, techniques and conventions
that we have looked at in previous sessions.
Explore how you could interpret the song
differently using different methods
You can add any extra info you think is
relevant, images, mind maps, etc
For quick mind maps you could use bubbl.us
to generate these
Idea generation is a personal thing, it might
not fit neatly into this proforma, so use it as a
guide, but add, adjust and amend as needed. I
just need to see your thought process and how
your ideas.
5. TITLE FIGHT: âCRESCENT-
SHAPED DEPRESSIONâ
Styles: Old homemade vhs camera , old night vision, mashup of clips
from other or different sources.
It'll have a cast of me and my friends and have us using our
skateboards too to push the motive of this being a homemade video
and to give the feel that its just a montage of clips put together of us
having fun and enjoying ourselves.
6. RESEARCH
Watch a selection of videos to get your ideas started,
make note of a minimum of 3 â add extra slides,
screenshot the video and in bullet point note down info
in terms of camera, editing, art design, performance, etc
and how this might link to your production. This can be
pulled from your case study
Hint!
Youâve already done this in
your case study, so you can
summarise that here where
relevant
7. TITLE FIGHT: HEAD IN THE
CELLING FAN
⢠In head in the ceiling fan there is a focus on
the vhs style and aesthetic with the use of a
hi8 Sony camcorder. This gives the video a
grainy old visual style with scan lines
reoccurring throughout to give it that
homemade style. They also use multiple styles
of shots including: closeups , low angled shots
, long distance shots and even some POV shots
to add to that homemade feel.
⢠They have also used sped up shots and even
reversed some of them and with them being
and alternative grunge/indie band I believe
these fall int their conventions along with the
old vhs homemade style. Most of the shots
consist of the guitarist Jamie Rhoden as the
main singer within the video mostly portrayed
alone but with people in the background but
8. TITLE FIGHT:
SHED
⢠Shed also contains that vhs, old camera style
from title fight which seems to be there staple. It
lens more towards their harder more grunge style
of production and visual effects with a more
vibrant tone and colours. They have included
some closeups again but more focused on the
mouth area of the performer but also includes
what seems to be a handheld technique to make
it seem more homemade once again which can
tie into the nostalgia feel which comes from their
music videos making the viewer gain that
connection to the song, including that they have
used more clips from elsewhere and added them
with them playing sports or just enjoying their
time together.
â˘With the wide angle shots you can see a tent and
the whole band performing gives the
interpretation that theyâve been camping out
together which is enforced with the extra clips
they have added throughout but can still give the
viewer room to interpret. It feels like âShedâ falls
fairly evenly into the category of the grunge/indie
genre especially with the music video which gives
it a mix of both as the song contrasts the more
9. TITLE FIGHT: ROSE OF
SHARON
ď§In rose of Sharon title fight have used a more clean yet
psychedelic and visually capturing style with hints of
their classic vhs old style. It seems to have a cowboy
style and tropes within it as the boy at the start is
dressed like a cowboy and is watching an old western
cowboy movie on an old vhs tv which then cuts to the
more clean style of the group performing within the Tv.
ď§They have also used closeups to focus on each of the
band members singularly then cut to a wider angle of the
full band together performing. The effects of the
morphing and moving shapes has been overlayed onto
them with a possible projector along with eyes which
blink giving it a eerie but gripping look. It also seems to
cut back to the boy once he has grown up towards the
end but it is not clear allowing the viewer to make their
own interpretation up.
10. POTENTIAL SONGS
Title fight : head in the ceiling fan , shed , leaf , crescent
shaped depression , numb but I still feel it
Yung bruh: her, eternal , souljawitchâs faith
PINKPANTHERESS: pain, break it off
Playboi carti: lean4real , location, let it go
11. POTENTIAL
TECHNIQUES
Pov: Pov shots are used to show the perspective of the artist's view
and actions they do throughout the section which contains it. It
allows the viewer to possibly feel more connected to the artist or
the music video itself.
Close ups: these are used massively in all media and in music
videos it predominates the industry as it creates a sense of intimacy
and intensity between the consumer and artist.
faster more captivating style of editing usually consisting of
mashups of clips put together to match the pacing and style of the
track.
Things that could be edited are
Color
Brightness
Effects e.g. transitions , vhs
12. MUSIC VIDE CONVENTIONS
YOU PLAN TO USE
This could be lip sync, beat editing, montage, narrative,
performance, dance, etc, etc
ď§A montage of clips from throughout the filming will be
put together within the video along with editing and cuts
on the beat.
ď§Some cuts of lip synching with stuff going on in the
background/ having an interesting dynamic background
e.g., bridge over motorway.
ď§ me and my friends just being together and doing stuff
together e.g. skating , going out etc.
14. SUMMARY
5 opportunities of your ideas
⢠to go out and explore some new locations for shots
â˘Using an old/ hi8 camera for the old retro footage feel.
â˘Using the editing software and becoming more adept with it.
â˘Becoming better and more comfortable with a camera.
â˘Trying different camera techniques.
15. SUMMARY
5 restrictions to your ideas
â˘Old cameras might be harder to work with/ get the footage.
â˘Some places may be restricted or hard to get too due to weather
etc.
⢠donât have full understanding of the editing software yet so
some things may lack.
â˘Some techniques may not be fully fleshed out and may come off
as bad or unfitting.
16. FINAL IDEA â

17. FINAL IDEA â TRACK
SUMMARY
Summary/analysis of track [consider meaning, content,
duration, pace and style of the song]
â˘The track has a melodic and angelic feel to it , it talks about
wanting to with someone but not being able to and fantasizing
about the possibilities.
â˘5mins
â˘Slowly paced but with a synth and drums.
18. FINAL IDEA â YOUR IDEA
Your creative concept/video synopsis [describe your interpretation,
use of imagery or narrative, genre conventions, etc]
⢠a vhs homemade video to have a natural tone with me and my
friends by just going out and skating, driving around , going to new
places.
20. GUIDANC
E:
PRE-
PRODUCT
ION
ASSESSM
ENT
You need to assess the viability of your production and
investigate what is required to enable you to make your
music video
Much of this task is hypothetical, which means you will
need to investigate standard costings for such a
production and apply these to your planned production
considering which equipment you would need and
resources, etc
Resources to support this are in the Pre-production
assessment folder on Blackboard
Delete the questions on each slide and insert your
responses
21. TITLE OF
PRODUCTION/PRODUC
TION OUTLINE
Summary of intended production
Detail here what you are going to
make and the intended outcome
Detailed breakdown of the music
track chosen and your interpretation
of it [remember the questions in the
workbook, e.g.
pace/mood/tone/structure]
Specific outline your intended
technical/equipment requirements
Include any details that you think
[you could use material from your
pitch]
22. LOCATIONS
You need to identify locations and plan a recce of where
you would like to film. What back up options do you
have? List it all.
What are the limitations and risks, eg distance, access,
cost, weather? How will you manage this?
â˘Town: highly accessible ,cheap , low risk environment ,
can allow for great night shots due to the highly lit
environment.
â˘Bridge over a64: low risk, accessible , no cost, allows
long shots of the passing traffic and looks great at night.
â˘My house: has led lights which could add for some
interesting dynamic lighting.
23. EQUIPMENT
What do you need? E.g. equipment, resources? Mostly from
college, but who do you need to speak to get this kit? What is
available? When?
Look at equipment hire places, etc
â˘An old camcorder
â˘Tripod
â˘Light stick possibly
â˘Lighting
24. FACILITIES
You will most likely edit at college, but do you need any
other specialist facilities Green screen, studio, etc
â˘No all the shot will be organic and natural in film.
25. PERSONNEL
CREW: What is you team? Who is in it? What are each team
members strengths/weaknesses? When are they available?
CAST: Do you need any external performers? When are they
available? Cost implications? Will you have to feed them?
Transport them?
Other personnel? Is anyone else helping you?
â˘My team is me and my friends , brandon , matt , jack , dan and
Cameron. Availability is varied but I wont need everyone in
every shot all the time. Most of them haven had experience
behind a camera but that isnât too big of a problem as I want it
to have that homemade , just pickedup the camera and started
filming feel.
â˘Cost for travel and food will be minimal and wont be much so
its fair for everyone.
26. PROPS/COSTUME/ETC
Props : we are going to be using skateboards too add to the feel of
it being a homemade film and any other props that are found for
e.g. a nerf gun , ps4 anything that may add to that feel and style.
28. PRE-PRODUCTION:
VISUAL PLANNING
This section is concerned with the visual planning of your
music video
You should use this section to develop the sequencing or your
video, establish the relationship between the visuals and the
track itself and create a structure for you to follow when
filming
It is important that you âpre-visualizeâ the video before you
make it; it will make filming and production a more
streamlined process
The following tasks are part of your visual planning
ď Pre-visualization and concept boards
ď Storyboarding
ď Shot list
29. PRE-
VISUALIZATION/CONCE
PT BOARDS
Tool for exploring the direction and visuals
Provides inspiration and information for the âlook & feelâ
Presents key moments in your video
A means to sketch/plan ideas
Information on color/lighting
Defining the âmise-en-sceneâ
Include as much here as you like, but keep it relevant to the
production, the following slides have been left blank for you to
approach in your own way, add more as you need to
Extension suggestion: edit a short sequence of clips that have
inspired or influenced your video [similar to this:

31. STRUCTU
RAL
BREAKDO
WN
Breakdown your track into it basic sections [e.g.
intro, verse, chorus, verse, etc] and apply broad
visual ideas to each section
You can use this as the master template for your
production, then add more shots to each section
when you develop your full visual plan
You should create a slide showing all the sections
of the song, then add a slide for each section with
timings, lyrics, what happens and details on
specific shots
You could storyboard and shot list each section
as you go, to break up the process.
32. STRUCTURAL
BREAKDOWN
(chorus/post-chorus). Location 1; my house. This location will contain
closeup shots of my face/ my friends faces next to my led lights to
add a dynamic lighting option. Most likely will contain use of props
e.g. ps4 , nerf gun to link back to that homemade feel. Shots of
friends/me playing ps4 from behind including the games displayed
on screen. Some shots of the garden and the flowers and plants
throughout the day, possible lip-sinking within the closeups in room
against the ledâs.
(verse). Location 2; Bridge over A64. will be filmed at dawn/night to
allow for long drawn out shots of the traffic underneath the bridge.
Clips of me, Brandon and matt skating will be done here too more at
the time of dawn to get better lighting, also will use led video lighting
for the night-time shots to illuminate the subject. Shots of nature and
the buildings and the sports village.
(bridge/chorus) location 3; Town. Using the city lights to their
advantage especially at night by finding highpoints on buildings and
filming from there with the city scape. Using the lighting in the
garden seats at hungate with its more modern aesthetic and bridge
which goes over the water. Using closeups and long drawn zoom in
33. STORYBOAR
DING
Your storyboard should bring your idea to
life
Provide an idea of the sequencing of you

41. RISK
ASSESSM
ENT
Risk Assess each separate filming
location using the table in the
camera H&S PP on Bb as a staring
point
Completing a generic filming
assessment would be a start, then
you can add specialist/site specific
risks as you progress your
production
Remember, a Risk Assessment is an
ongoing document, you should
evaluate if anything changes in
production and when you put
control measures in place
You should add the table to each
call sheet for each location
42. RISK
ASSESSMEN
T
My house : low risk overall , very low chance of any problems or risk
to be in place , unless due to a mistake or an external problem which
has interfered.
York sport village/ a64 bridge : risks of falling off bridge if one climbs
in the ledge , accidents from skating could occur if one is not paying
attention or on accident.
Riskâ Control Measureâ
Slips, trips and falls while using
equipment/lookingthrough viewfinders.â
â˘Ensure you are familiar with your surroundings, any
plannedmovements and that the location is safe.â
â˘Any camera movements should employ a spotter for thecamera
operator, directing the movement safely.â
Manual handling carrying equipmentâ â˘Do not carry/move equipment beyond your comfort level.â
â˘Request help when transporting equipment/share amongst crew.â
â˘Adhere to manual handlingmethods for carrying items.â
Lost/stolen equipmentâ â˘Do not leave any equipment unattended.â
Electrical equipment, extension/data cables and plugs-
electric shockâ
â˘Do not touch any equipment that appears faulty and report it to
thetutor/technician.â
43. CONTINGENCY
PLANNING
Things go wrong
Your contingency plan is there to give you a
backup or to minimise the effect on
production
You should consider the following areas:
Technical, Location, Personnel and
Organisational areas [about 5 potential issues
for each]
Use the form in pre-production folder on
Blackboard
45. PRODUCTION SCHEDULE
Your schedule should budget a total of 10 hours for
production, that is for the filming and editing of your
project.
You should plan when youâre filming and how you intend
to use the in class days on your timetable/class schedule
47. CLEARANCE AND
PERMISSIONS
Any place you film and anyone you use in the
filming of your video must have a completed form
Blank forms are available for you to complete and
insert here, you can also create your own
