This template PowerPoint presentation
includes all the relevant elements you
need to cover in your Music Video
Assignment
It is suggested you save this PP in a
different name – some sections
require you to delete the information
on the slide and replace with your own
work
Add more pages to each section
where necessary [you should be doing
this!]
Add visuals as you see necessary
This document will be added to as you
progress through the pre-production
phase.
The biggest tip is that if you say you
want to do something, or a
techniques, etc, say WHY you have
chosen to do this. Always EXPLAIN
your thinking.
Delete this slide when complete
4. RESEARCH & IDEA
GENERATION
Select a song/track that you like [or don’t like!]
Generate three ideas for music videos
employing styles, techniques and conventions
that we have looked at in previous sessions.
Explore how you could interpret the song
differently using different methods
You can add any extra info you think is
relevant, images, mind maps, etc
For quick mind maps you could use bubbl.us
to generate these
Idea generation is a personal thing, it might
not fit neatly into this proforma, so use it as a
guide, but add, adjust and amend as needed. I
just need to see your thought process and how
your ideas.
5. RESEARCH
Watch a selection of videos to get your ideas started,
make note of a minimum of 3 – add extra slides,
screenshot the video and in bullet point note down info
in terms of camera, editing, art design, performance, etc
and how this might link to your production. This can be
pulled from your case study
Hint!
You’ve already done this in
your case study, so you can
summarise that here where
relevant
6.
7. Fake a smile
I like the editing style because It is very
cinematic and creates a good immersion with
who ever is viewing it whilst drawing them in
and the song expresses that the people that
are closest to you can see your true emotions.
It has a lot of close ups and long shots which
make it very cinematic.
8. UNITY
I like this song because it is based on retro 8
bit arcade games and it doesn’t really have a
video it is just a short animation that is played
over again this makes the focus of the
consumer the music instead of the video
9. FREEFALL
I like this song because its from a game the
song ads a lot to the event that happen in the
game and once again the song has no video
making the whole magic the song, so the
consumer is more impacted by the song as
appose to the video.
10. SUNFLOWER
I like this song because it is a very
laid back and positive making it a
calming song. The video is
animated making the foal point
more about the laid back lyrics and
not about flashy people
11. POTENTIAL TECHNIQUES
Use flashy colors in postproduction this will allow me to
create a more intensive environment and draw more
consumers in. Use cinematic shots in the video to make
the music video seem more inviting and create a
stronger immersion. Use fast pace editing to keep the
video fast pace and draw in younger audiences like
teenagers as they are the largest demographic that listen
to music.
12. MUSIC VIDEO CONVENTIONS
YOU PLAN TO USE
This could be lip sync, beat editing, montage, narrative,
performance, dance, etc, etc
A montage and lip syncing .Montage through the woods
with short brakes of lip syncing mixed with cinematic
creating an atmosphere that will pull in consumers
.Repetitive fast pace editing as well as editing to the
beat. Dark clothing so it contrasts with the back drop of
the woods
14. SUMMARY
5 opportunities of your ideas
Using transitions between lip syncing and cinematic
shots
Use different shots and angles to create a cinematic
appeal
Use a colorful editing style
fast-paced editing (cutting on the beat)
Experiment with lighting
15. SUMMARY
5 restrictions to your ideas
Weather’ we live in England
People’ I need them to look like actual people and not
sad teens
Time, I need to film and edit it all in the time frame
Kit, I need the right kit for what I want to do
Location, I need to find somewhere with good natural
lighting
16. FINAL IDEA –
ARTIST/TITLE/INFO
Fake a smile / Alan Walker
Alan walker is a British-Norwegian DJ, he was born 24 August 1997 he was
born in Northampton England. His artistic style was shaped and inspired by
EDM producers K-391 and Ahrix, and film composers such as Hans
Zimmer and Steve Jablonsky. In 2016, he left high school to continue his
career, and has since participated in many on-stage performances.
Links: Anne Marie
Genre: Future bass electro house slap house progressive house big room house deep
house
17. FINAL IDEA – TRACK
SUMMARY
Summary/analysis of track [consider meaning, content, duration, pace and
style of the song]
Fake a smile is a medium pace song with a lot of cinematic long shots. The
track and music video illuminates the strength it takes to remain steadfast in
the face of fear and darkness, and how we can garner that strength from those
around us. the music video portrays the characters rebelling against a
government.
18. FINAL IDEA – YOUR IDEA
Your creative concept/video synopsis [describe your
interpretation, use of imagery or narrative, genre
conventions, etc]
I want to film someone walking through a forest and
them lip syncing and edit them together with some cool
transitions
Darker clothing for some mystery

E:
PRE-
PRODUCT
ION
ASSESSM
ENT
You need to assess the viability of your production and
investigate what is required to enable you to make your
music video
Much of this task is hypothetical, which means you will
need to investigate standard costings for such a
production and apply these to your planned production
considering which equipment you would need and
resources, etc
Resources to support this are in the Pre-production
assessment folder on Blackboard
Delete the questions on each slide and insert your
responses
21. TITLE OF
PRODUCTION/PRODUC
TION OUTLINE
Summary of intended production
Detail here what you are going to
make and the intended outcome
Detailed breakdown of the music
track chosen and your interpretation
of it [remember the questions in the
workbook, e.g.
pace/mood/tone/structure]
Specific outline your intended
technical/equipment requirements
Include any details that you think
[you could use material from your
pitch]
22. LOCATIONS
You need to identify locations and plan a recce of where
you would like to film. What back up options do you
have? List it all.
What are the limitations and risks, eg distance, access,
cost, weather? How will you manage this?
My primary location is a forest for my back up I would
film it in a cave
The issues with filming out in the open is the weather if
it is raining, I won't be able to film with the camera I
would have to use my phone and that will lower the
quality
23. EQUIPMENT
What do you need? E.g. equipment, resources? Mostly
from college, but who do you need to speak to get this
kit? What is available? When?
A camera and a tri pod so that I can keep the footage
stable
And a spare battery so I can film for a longer duration
I can speak to my tutor Scott
24. FACILITIES
You will most likely edit at college, but do you need any
other specialist facilities…? Green screen, studio, etc.
I could use the back drop to make a clean colorful shot
Most likely not but if I were to there are facilities at
college that I could ask to use
25. PERSONNEL
CREW: me the person who will be filming always available
CAST: I just need 1 person for the shots I want to take, I
will need to feed them, but transport isn’t an issue
because we can walk to where I am wanting to film
26. PROPS/COSTUME/E
TC
I don’t need any
props
But I will get some
dark costumes to
fit in with the color
choice and not
blend in with the
greens and browns
of a forest or field
this will allow the
actor to stand out
28. PRE-PRODUCTION:
VISUAL PLANNING
This section is concerned with the visual planning of your
music video
You should use this section to develop the sequencing or your
video, establish the relationship between the visuals and the
track itself and create a structure for you to follow when
filming
It is important that you ‘pre-visualise’ the video before you
make it; it will make filming and production a more
streamlined process
The following tasks are part of your visual planning
Pre-visualisation and concept boards
Storyboarding
Shot list
29. PRE-
VISUALISATION/CONC
EPT BOARDS
Tool for exploring the direction and visuals
Provides inspiration and information for the “look & feel”
Presents key moments in your video
A means to sketch/plan ideas
Information on colour/lighting
Defining the “mise-en-scene”
Include as much here as you like, but keep it relevant to the
production, the following slides have been left blank for you to
approach in your own way, add more as you need to
Extension suggestion: edit a short sequence of clips that have
inspired or influenced your video [similar to this:

31. Starts off with a
person slowly walking
through the woods
with the camera slowly
zooming in on them
Then transitions to
them lip syncing for
around 20 seconds it
will slowly zoom out
Some cinematic shots
of the forest and
surrounding area
Slow zoom into
someone sat down
doing a lip sync
Cinematic shots of
someone slowly
spinning in a field with
birds flying over top
Slow cinematic pan of
the field and
surrounding area
32. STRUCTU
RAL
BREAKDO
WN
Breakdown your track into it basic sections [e.g.
intro, verse, chorus, verse, etc] and apply broad
visual ideas to each section
You can use this as the master template for your
production, then add more shots to each section
when you develop your full visual plan
You should create a slide showing all the sections
of the song, then add a slide for each section with
timings, lyrics, what happens and details on
specific shots
You could storyboard and shot list each section
as you go, to break up the process.
33. You and I, up all night
Nothing's wrong, nothing's right
I swear these walls are upside down
Swear the roof is underground
Demons don't sleep at night
Oh, oh, oh
I try to turn off my mind
Say I'm doing just fine
But I'm screaming inside like (oh-oh-oh-oh)
Say these words on repeat
While I'm trying to breathe
Now you're counting on me
So I fake a smile
But I know you know me too well
But it's alright
You're like heaven when I'm in hell
You were there, heavy heart
Tasted light but fed the dark
I'm waiting for them all to see
I don't deserve your company
To love myself is way too hard
Oh, oh, oh
I try to turn off my mind
Say I'm doing just fine
But I'm screaming inside like (oh-oh-oh-oh)
Say these words on repeat
While I'm trying to breathe
Now you're counting on me
So I fake a smile
But I know you know me too well
But it's alright
You're like heaven when I'm in hell
So I fake a smile
But I know you know me too well
But it's alright
You're like heaven when I'm in hell
So I fake a smile
But I know you know me too well
But it's alright
You're like heaven when I'm in hell
So I fake a smile
But I know you know me too well
But it's alright

34. SHOT LIST
A shot of the stary night sky
A slow zoom of the person slowly walking through the
woods
Then a close of them lip syncing
Then a slow Mo of them joyfully strolling in the woods
Then cinematic shots of that forest
Then a shot of them joyfully walking through a field with
high grass
Then them lip syncing in that field sat down
Then cinematic shots of that field
For when the lyrics repeat I want the lighting to be darker but
still use similar locations and shot styles
So I will film the first half of the music video then wait a bit and
film the second half
35. For when the lyric repeat I
want the shots to be a
darker lighted variant of the
of the shots
36. You and I, up all night
Nothing's wrong, nothing's right
I swear these walls are upside down
Swear the roof is underground
Demons don't sleep at night
Oh, oh, oh
I want this verse to be cinematic shot of the
night and night sky which will later link up
with the ending portion of the song as the
lighting will slowly get darker
I want this section to be around 15 seconds
37. I try to turn off my mind
Say I'm doing just fine
But I'm screaming inside like (oh-oh-oh-oh)
Say these words on repeat
While I'm trying to breathe
Now you're counting on me
I want this scene to start off with a person walking away from the camera
whilst it slowly closes the shot on them
Then I want the camera to slowly pan around them at a low angle shot
I want the pan to end directly in front of them
I want this section to be around 15 seconds
38. So I fake a smile
But I know you know me too well
But it's alright
You're like heaven when I'm in hell
This is the cinematic portion of the
forest shots
I want the camera to move through the
forest at a low angle to make the forest
to seem massive
I want this section to be around 15
seconds
39. You were there, heavy heart
Tasted light but fed the dark
I'm waiting for them all to see
I don't deserve your company
To love myself is way too hard
Oh, oh, oh
I want it to start off with the person facing the camera with a mid shot
then them slowly turn around and walk away as the shot zooms out
Then I want it to quickly zoom into them before the lip sync
I want this section to be around 15 seconds
40. I try to turn off my mind
Say I'm doing just fine
But I'm screaming inside like (oh-oh-oh-oh)
Say these words on repeat
While I'm trying to breathe
Now you're counting on me
The camera is going to be in a close up shot after the zooming
in the previous part
As there lip syncing I want the camera to slowly zoom out
I want this section to be around 15 seconds
41. STORYBOAR
DING
Your storyboard should bring your idea to
life
Provide an idea of the sequencing of you
video
Provides a basis for production
Suggested online storyboard creators are:
https://www.storyboardthat.com
http://www.pixton.com [very
complicated]
http://www.storyjumper.com [allows you
to insert your own images]
Alternatively, hand draw or photograph
your storyboard and scan or copy to insert
it onto your slides
There are lots of tips collected together on
Blackboard!
42. SHOT
LIST
Your shot list should contain the
sequential breakdown of what you
need to shoot for your video
It should work in partnership with
your storyboard
It will be your working document
when you film
It should contain the shot number,
scene number, shot description,
framing and action you will see
It should also have information on
performers in the scene and other
props, etc
Shot list template is on Blackboard
in the pre-production folder.
45. LOCATION
INFORMAT
ION
Information and images of your
location[s] for filming
You should have address details,
clearance/premissions for filming,
recce photos and floorplans
[including camera, equipment and
cast/crew layouts]
Where possible, have a plan B
fallback location option
Assess each location for any issues
and suggest solutions
46. LOCATIONS
I'm planning on filming in the
valley gardens and Harlow carr
gardens
There both public places
I will need to make sure that
that I film
When people aren't around so
that I get no interruptions when
I'm filming because that wound
extend the total time I would
have to film for.
Harlow carr is only open
during the day so I would
need to film during the
day
If I am unable to film at
those locations then I
will film at the horse
shoe fields which is in
Knaresborough
47. RISK
ASSESSM
ENT
Risk Assess each separate filming
location using the table in the
camera H&S PP on Bb as a staring
point
Completing a generic filming
assessment would be a start, then
you can add specialist/site specific
risks as you progress your
production
Remember, a Risk Assessment is an
ongoing document, you should
evaluate if anything changes in
production and when you put
control measures in place
You should add the table to each
call sheet for each location
48. RISK ASSESSMENT
Health risks : trips and slips that
could lead to injury's whilst using
the equipment
Make sure that the ground that I am
filming on is stable and as level as
possible
Carrying the equipment that is to
heavy that could injure your back or
pull a muscle
Make sure that people aren’t
carrying more than they need to
Damaged or lost equipment Make sure that you handle the
equipment with care and don’t
leave it un attended
Using faulty equipment that could
lead to electrocution or other
related accidents
If the equipment appears faulty or
broken report it to the tutor
risks Control
measure
49. CONTINGENCY
PLANNING
Things go wrong
Your contingency plan is there to give you a
backup or to minimize the effect on
production
You should consider the following areas:
Technical, Location, Personnel and
Organizational areas [about 5 potential issues
for each]
Use the form in pre-production folder on
Blackboard
50. CONTINGENCY PLAN
Actors cant make it
because of distance of
where the shoot is
this would make it so
that I wouldn’t be able to
film in my desired
location
If they live far away I
could get
accommodation for them
so they don have to
travel all day
The battery dies on the
camera because of over
use
This would make it so I
wouldn’t be able to film
and would have to leave
the area to charge the
battery
Bring multiple battery's
and don’t over use the
camera (turn it off when
not in use)
Not being able to film
because of lack of
permission
This would mean that I
wouldn’t be able to film
in my preferred location
Get permition in advance
The actors not being the
best (laughing and losing
composure during the
shot)
This would make the
shots that I take have
less quality
Have multiple people and
take many shots so I can
pick the best from them
51. PRODUCTION SCHEDULE
I am going to film over the half term
In class hours I am going to practice my editing skills or
add more detail to my planning
I'm going to spend around 3-4 hours filming
And 6 hours editing
52. SCHEDULE
I will be filming on the weekend as that is when it is most
suitable for all the cast members. As I am filming out
side of college I will need to book out equipment
I don’t need to book a studio so I don’t need to plan
around that
53. CLEARAN
CE AND
PERMISSI
ONS
Any place you film and
anyone you use in the
filming of your video must
have a completed form
Blank forms are available
for you to complete and
insert here, you can also
create your own
