Type Of Image
This image shows a very traditional retro 8bit video game, the
image looks set in a location with an earth like field, the effects in
this image are quite simple and subtle.
Elements(lighting, costumes, props)
The lighting in this image is very clear, the character jumping in the
air is stood in front of a clear blue sky as its background trying to
make its way across a muddy field avoiding enemies, the colours in
this image are very bright and vibrant. The costume that is being
worn by the main character looks to be a plumbing overall.
Sound effects
The sound effects in this game are very traditional retro game
effects, when the character is jumping it gives off a beeping sound
effect and when the character comes to physical contact with
enemies the sound of a grunt with a slight beeping noise comes
into play.
Audience appeal
I would say that this image of the game appeals to the audience
who have played it because of how realistic it would have looked at
the time of its release, It would appeal to the audience because it
includes a wide selection of bright vibrant colours, fun sound
effects and soundtracks. The missions that the game includes may
be appealing to the audience because they may find it to be a
challenge to complete.
3. Existing Product 2
Type Of Image
This image shows a game based with a maze as its main map, the
effects in this image are quite simple as it was made in the early
1980s so I don’t expect it to be as technical is modern day video
games.
Elements(lighting, costumes, props)
The lighting in this image is visibly clear, the colours in this image
are. Their isn't any costumes that are used in this game since there
is not any human like figures however there are props such as
weapons you can use to help you complete the game, there is also
tokens spread around the map to collect which will earn you XP
Sound effects
The sound effects in this game are still standard traditional 8bit
retro sounds, the most common sound effect in this game is an
explosion sound effect and the sound of blocks being destroyed as
the main purpose of the game is to destroy as many blocks as you
can with the time given.
Audience appeal
I do think that this game appeals to the audience playing the game
because i think the game will come across as a huge challenge to
the players as they only have a certain amount of time to destroy
as much blocks as they can before the time runs out.
4. Existing Product 3
Type Of Image
This image shows a slightly modern style of a maze game, the developers
must have wanted to make it more futuristic as it looks more robotic than
other maze styled 8bit games. Taking a look at this and comparing it to other
maze game it looks like a completely different genre, the other maze games I
had looked at all looked like they were based in a world of fantasy that
includes goblins, knight's and other medieval elements, this game looks more
modern and sci –fi.
Elements(lighting, costumes, props)
The lighting in this image is quite dark but is lit up by the characters and
objects in the game, the characters and enemies are not human like in this
game, they are more like robotics and space creatures. The colours in this
game are bright and vibrant, the developers have also used neon colours to
make the maze lit up, an example for this game using neon colours is the
yellow tokens which are a prop scattered around the maze.
Sound effects
The sound effects in this game still retro, there is actually not a lot of different
sound effects in this game because the one sound effect that really sticks out
in this game is when you collect the tokens which sounds like a continues
pinging noise an when you destroy an enemy which is a sort of bang noise.
Audience appeal
I do think that Pac Man appeals to the audience that is playing the game
because it is the type of game that really makes you concentrate and think
about where you want to move because the 3 enemies that are in the game
move all over the place at fast speed and it makes you venerable is it is 1
against 3, the reason why I think this appeals to the players is because it really
does seem like a tough challenge and most people just want to complete it
without failing.
5. Existing Product 4
Type Of Image
This image shows another more futuristic version of a maze game,
the maze in this game is also lit up by neon blue and also has neon
text above and below it.
Elements(lighting, costumes, props)
The lighting in this image is relatively the same as Pac Man, its not
bright but it is lit up by neon colours going round the map, the
enemies are lit up red and the maze is lit up blue so you know
where you are supposed to go to finish the game.
Sound effects
The sound effects in this game are also similar to Pac man, they are
traditional 8bit sounds such a pinging noises and beeping noises,
the pinging noise comes up the most when you collect tokens and
the peeping noise comes up if you are harmed by the enemies.
Audience appeal
I think that this game appeals to the players of this game by
expressing the colours in the game, in each level the colours of the
maze, enemies, skins and other objects are always different, this
makes it less repetitive and more entertaining to watch the colours
change.
6. Research Analysis
• What common features do the researched products
have?
– The common features that my researched products have are a complicated map to play
through, most of the images that I have shown all include a maze map, the maze game
genre used to be a very popular style of game to play. Another common feature that my
researched products have is the 8-bit image style, the characters, the map and other
surroundings are all pixilated, they are all retro looking games. My researched products
also share similar sound effects when they game is playing, they use classic sound
effects such as beeping noises, classic retro 80s arcade music and a similar pinging noise
when tokens are collected through exploring the maze.
• What aspects of the research will you include within
your on work?
– The aspects of the research I have gathered that will be included in my final product are
the use of classic retro sound effects (pinging noise, beeping noise & classic 80s retro
music) I will also include the pixilated image styles to create a more realistic 8-bit video
game. I will include an original maze in my map like these existing products have, I will
include similar colours for my map and background that are used in these & also
characters enemies and objects that are presented In a style like the pictures I have tken
inspiration from.
