Here are the potential locations I have identified for filming my music video and the limitations/risks associated with each:- Sutton Bank - This is a large open area with scenic views. However, it is over an hour's drive away so getting there and back each day will take up a lot of time. The weather could also be unpredictable being outdoors. I will need to carefully plan filming days and have backup indoor locations.- Local Woods - Nearer to home so less travel time but more limited in scope of shots. May be difficult to get certain equipment in. Will need to recce carefully for best shooting spots. - Home/Garden - Convenient but limited in what can be filmed. May work
The document provides guidance for a music video assignment, including templates for pre-production tasks such as idea generation, research, and planning. The student has selected the song "Send Me On My Way" by Rusted Root for their music video. Their concept is to show freedom through scenic outdoor shots with bright colors and smoke/powder effects. Locations will include Sutton Bank, Kilburn Woods, and a private field. Equipment needs include cameras, lenses, rigs and lighting, which will be hired. Post-production editing may require an external editor. A friend will star in the video and others may help with filming over 4 days on a budget of £2000.

2. GUIDANCE
This template PowerPoint presentation includes all the
relevant elements you need to cover in your Music Video
Assignment 02
It is suggested you save this PP in a different name and
share it with your group so you always have a copy –
some sections require you to delete the information on
the slide and replace with your own work
Add more pages to each section where necessary [you
should be doing this!]
Add visuals as you see necessary
This document will be added to as you progress through
the pre-production phase.
4. RESEARCH & IDEA
GENERATION
Select a song/track that you like [or don’t like!]
Generate three ideas for music videos employing styles,
techniques and conventions that we have looked at in
previous sessions. Explore how you could interpret the
song differently using different methods
You can add any extra info you think is relevant, images,
mind maps, etc
For quick mind maps you could use bubbl.us to generate
these
5. RESEARCH
Watch a selection of videos to get your ideas started,
make note of a minimum of 5 – add extra slides,
screenshot the video and in bullet point note down info
in terms of camera, editing, art design, performance, etc
and how this might link to your production
6. NOTHING BUT THIEVES
– IF I GET HIGH
• I really like the use of silhouettes used
in this music video. I like how it can
give a meaning without showing a
characters face/their emotions.
• I like the colour palette used throughout
this music video, as it is quite dark and
gloomy, which reflects the mood of the
video.
• I like the CGI used in this music video, as it
sets an interesting tone to the video, and it
helps to add to the storyline.
7. KALEO – WAY DOWN WE
GO
• I like the way the tones of the video change
throughout this video. The video will go from
a black and white shot, to a shot with an
orange coloured hue.
• Again, I like the use of silhouettes in this
video, as it gives a different shot of the band
instead of just close-ups of them playing
instruments.
• I like how in this shot, there is a more of a
blue coloured hue to it. However, I also like
the frequent close ups as I feel it adds
meaning to the video, and helps to show
the message behind the video.
8. IMAGINE DRAGONS-
BELIEVER
• I really like the lighting used in this video, as it
has occasional shots with blue/red coloured
lights, which I feel gives an interesting effect to
the video.
• I like the way this shot has been created, with
the character in focus, and the bright colours
that are blurred in the background. I also like
how throughout the video, there is always a
shadow on the same side of the characters
face.
• I really like the CGI used in this video, as it
makes it look more unique.
9. WALK OFF THE EARTH-
RULE THE WORLD
• I really like the characters in the background
of this video as it makes the video more
interesting. I especially like the body paint
they are wearing, because I think it really
adds to the meaning of the video.
• I like this section of the video, as it is more
minimalistic and dark, but still has the bright
coloured boards in the background, which
creates some contrast.
• I like how the people in body paint correlate
to the coloured boards in the background.
10. VANCE JOY – MESS IS
MINE
• I really like the structure of this shot, as I think
it gives lots of meaning, that you wouldn’t
usually find straight away through the lyrics.
• I really like the colours used in this shot,
and throughout the video, as I feel they
work well together.
• I really like the lighting in this video, as there is
a white/blue light coming from the window, and
the orange/warm light coming from the street
behind the bear.
11. SONGS
Rusted Root- Send Me On My Way
Radical Face- Welcome Home
Roo Panes- Land of the Living
American Authors- Best Day of My Life
12. TECHNIQUES
I would like to replicate this type
of shot in my music video by
using different coloured gels, to
create a coloured hue. I would
use this during certain sections
of lip syncing throughout the
video.I would like to include sections of
lip syncing into my music video,
where the video matches exactly
with the song.
I would like to include nice
landscape shots in my video,
similar to the ones shown in
these screenshots, e.g. woods,
on a hike etc.
13. CONVENTIONS
The genre that my music genre will be isn’t very specific
as it fits multiple genres. They include alternative, rock,
folk music. Some of the conventions include:
-The artist/band featuring in the video, especially close-
ups.
-Focusing on nature
-Important Narrative
-Editing to the beat of the song
-Some shots of lip syncing, but not too frequent.
16. SUMMARY
5 restrictions to your ideas
-Prices of additional equipment.
-Locations available.
-People being available for filming.
-Travel
-Song might be too long to edit
17. FINAL IDEA –
ARTIST/TITLE/INFO
Name of track / name of artist – Send Me On My Way –
Rusted Root
Brief biographical background- The band achieved fame
in 1994 with the platinum selling album, When I Woke.
The song Send Me On My Way was released in 1994, and
has been featured in many adverts and movies.
Links to other artists – Rusted Root has links to other
bands such as Blues Traveler and Dave Matthews Band.
Genre info – Rusted Root’s music is classed as a fusion
of acoustic, rock, world and other styles of music. They
have a strong percussion section that draws from
African, Latin American, and Native American influences.
18. FINAL IDEA – TRACK
SUMMARY
Summary/analysis of track [consider meaning, content,
duration, pace and style of the song]
I think it is quite difficult to pinpoint the style of this
song, as it has elements from lots of different styles.
However, there is a clear acoustic style to this song. The
song lasts for 4 minutes 5 seconds. This song has a fairly
slow pace, but tends to speed up in certain places. I think
the meaning behind this is to do with freedom, as there
are lots of references throughout the song to leaving a
place, running, and being young.
19. FINAL IDEA – YOUR IDEA
Your creative concept/video synopsis [describe your
interpretation, use of imagery or narrative, genre
conventions, etc]
I have interpreted this song as a happy song that is
relating to freedom. Therefore, I feel as though the
majority of this video should be filmed outside, to show
the freedom of the character. This is going to include
some scenic shots, to show how free the character
actually is. I am also going to use lots of bright colours
to show the happy tone of the video. This includes the
costume of the character, and the use of coloured smoke
bombs, and powder paint, which will be thrown in the
wind. I am also going to be including lip syncing
throughout the video, as this is seen quite frequently
through other music videos that are similar to this. With
the lip syncing, I will be using coloured gels to place near
the lights, to create a coloured hue, which will change
throughout the video, to show different colours. This is
21. GUIDANCE:
PRE-PRODUCTION
ASSESSMENT
You need to assess the viability of your production and
investigate what is required to enable you to make your
music video
Much of this task is hypothetical, which means you will
need to investigate standard costings for such a
production and apply these to your planned production
considering which equipment you would need and
resources, etc
Resources to support this are in the Pre-production
assessment folder on Blackboard
Delete the questions on each slide and insert your
responses
22. GUIDANCE:
BUDGET TARGET
You have provisionally given an outline target of £2000
to make your music video
This target should include a 10% contingency [that
means your budget should allow for £200 pounds within
the budget – so realistically you aim lower than £1800]
Your budget should account for everything, except your
own time and input
Consider more than one option to solve a requirement –
you may be able to balance your budget later, there will
have to be a compromise somewhere
23. GUIDANCE:
TIME
You will need to plan a schedule for the pre-
production/production/post-production
Nominally you should work on 2 weeks pre-production, 1
week filming [2 college days – Mon./Tues first week after
half term] and 2 weeks edit/post-production
I will be filming the video, and I will have a friend that will
help with transport and setting shots up. I have another
friend that is going to act in my video also. I will spend 4
days filming the videos at different locations. The locations
are always available so there isn’t a problem there. Also, I
will be using my own equipment which is also always
available. I will spend around 2 days editing the video.
The only problem I can foresee is the powder paint/smoke
grenades not being delivered in time for filming. However, I
can overcome this by ordering them at an earlier date.
24. TITLE OF
PRODUCTION/PRODUCTI
ON OUTLINE
Send Me On My Way – Rusted Root (Music Video)
I am going to be making a music video to the song above. I
intend to create a video that is of high quality and is at near
professional level.
I have interpreted the song as mainly being about freedom
and leaving somewhere and being able to go anywhere and
do anything. The song is quite a slow pace, but the mood
seems to be very happy and relaxed. I will be adding in lots
of shots of scenic shots and shots of nature to help show
the freedom of the character. I will also be adding in lots of
lip syncing as the song is 4 minutes long which will help to
break up the video a bit more.
I will not require any equipment as I can use my own, as
that will be more accessible than hiring equipment.
However, I will need editing software to edit the video.
25. LOCATIONS
You need to identify locations and plan a recce.
What are the limitations and risks, eg distance, access, cost, weather? How will
you manage this?
Sutton Bank – this is a 10 minute drive from my house, which will cost to pay for
petrol to travel there. It would not cost to film there but it would cost for travel.
The weather is a huge factor in this location as it would need to be sunny/not
raining to film, as there is no cover which would result in equipment getting
damaged. To film here, I would need to contact North York Moors National Parks,
to find out who owns the area of land I would like to film in, and to ask them for
permission to film here. This would cost around £2 in petrol to get there.
Kilburn Woods – this is located next to Sutton Bank, which would mean that
filming could be done in the same day without travelling. This is an area that is
quite accessible, however the shots will be dependent on the weather.
A field – I have a friend that owns a field, where we could film our shots with the
smoke bombs, as it would mean that it is not in a public place, meaning we would
not be breaking the law by letting them off. Also, this would be really cost
effective, as they’re not charging for us to film there.
My House – I would be using my house to shoot the lip syncing shots with the
lighting gels, which would be free and very accessible and wouldn’t rely on the
weather being a certain way.
26. EQUIPMENT
What do you need? E.g. equipment, resources? Mostly
from college, but who do you need to speak to get this
kit? What is available? When?
Look at equipment hire places, etc

28. FACILITIES
Where will you edit your video? Do you need any other
specialist facilities…?
I have looked into places that we could edit the video in,
however there isn’t many places locally, that would
require us to travel really far to edit the video. Instead, it
would be easier to hire an editor to edit the video for us.
The prices to hire an editor is usually paid by hour, and
the most common price is around £20 per hour. The
video would take around 2 days to edit, with around 6
hours per day which would work out at roughly £240 for
the video to be edited. This would help as if there are
certain ways we would like the video to be edited, but
don’t have the skills for, it would give us the opportunity
to use their skills to our advantage.
29. PERSONNEL
CREW: What is you team? Who is in it? What are each team members
strengths/weaknesses? When are they available?
CAST: Do you need any external performers? When are they available? Cost
implications? Will you have to feed them? Transport them?
Other personnel? Is anyone else helping you?
I will be using one of my friends as the main character in my video. They
are available every day apart from Saturdays. Her strengths are that she is
willing to do anything to help out, but a weakness would be is that she
doesn’t have much experience with music videos/being filmed.
I would also need somebody else to help with lighting and setting up
equipment etc. as it would be very difficult to do it all by myself. I have a
couple of other friends that can help, however it depends on the day to
whether they are available to help or not.
I would not need to pay my friend to be in the video, as she is willing to
do it, but it will cost to feed them. I would give them £20 each per day for
food. I am aiming to have the video filmed in 4 days, which would mean
that with 2 people helping, it would cost £160 to pay for their food
throughout.
Also, it would cost to transport them. It would cost around £2 to pay for
the petrol to film at Sutton Bank, however, we would need to pay more to
transport additional people. I would say that £30 would be enough to
transport 3 people and the equipment to the location.

production costs
Local equipment hire companies have costs for camera,
lenses and kit [tripod, dolly, steadicam rigs, etc]
Travel by vehicle can be nominally charged at 40p per mile –
so you need to know how far you location is from where you
are!
34. CODES OF PRACTICE
AND REGULATION
I have one actor under the age of 18 that will be in my
music video, so I would need parental permission forms.
I will also be filming on private property, so I would need
written consent from the owners.
There may be some health and safety issues that we
need to be careful with when filming. These may occur
when we are filming at Sutton Bank and Kilburn Woods,
as there may be paths which aren’t suitable to walk on,
which we would need to be sure of. Also, there may be
some issues with carrying equipment, as the paths are
sometimes unsafe, which would mean we would need
extra people to carry equipment.
35. FINANCE/PRODUCTION
COSTS
Using industry rates cards and researched costs of
equipment [cameras], cast, crew, props and facilities
[locations, edit rooms, etc] calculate the likely cost of
your production
Outline details of financial considerations of project, this
could be cost of props/costume/travel/food/etc
Explain what your overall budget is [if applicable] and
how this is to be met
How will you deal with any extra costs? Contingency
fund? What percentage of your budget should this be?
[hint: add 10% on to the final cost, this should cover it!]
Do you foresee any problems? How will you manage
this/over come them?

BREAKDOWN
Provide a costs table for your budget, if you have
considered more than one cost option, provide
alternative final budgets and state a preference with
justification for which option you would choose.
39. BUDGET EXPLANATION
AND JUSTIFICATION
Locations: Option 1: Sutton Bank & Kilburn Woods / My house /
Friends field / Total cost: £30
Locations: Option 2: Sutton Bank & Kilburn Woods / Studio /
Friends field / Beach / Total cost: £300
I would prefer option 2, as it would look more professional and
there is a wider range of shots I would be able to get with those
locations.
Equipment: Option 1: Canon 5D Mk IV (£253.44) / Canon EF 24-
70mm F/2.8L USM (£47.47) / Genus Full Shoulder Rig (£72.00) /
Manfrotto Fluid Tripod (£23.04) /Litepanels Micro Pro (£32.12) /

Stabilizer (£119.70) / Genus Full Shoulder Rig (£72.00) /
Manfrotto Fluid Tripod (£23.04) / Litepanels Micro Pro (£32.12) /
Total cost: £534.14
I would prefer option 2, as I have added a stabilizer into the
budget, which would be a lot more helpful and would allow me to
40. BUDGET EXPLANATION
AND JUSTIFICATION
Props: I have added the same props into both options as I
would be happy using the props in option 1.
Costume: Option 1 / Total cost: £14.95
Costume: Option 2 / Total cost: £50
I would choose option 2, as it would allow me to purchase
extra costumes, in case anything happened to the original.
Also, it would allow me to switch costumes more often.
In the 2nd option, I have added in a section to pay the actors
for being in the video. This is because I was needing to use
some more of the money up to reach the budget.
Overall, I would choose option 2, as there is lots more
things added that will make the video a lot easier to make.
This would include a camera stabilizer and added locations.
42. PRE-PRODUCTION:
VISUAL PLANNING
This section is concerned with the visual planning of your
music video
You should use this section to develop the sequencing or
your video, establish the relationship between the visuals
and the track itself and create a structure for you to
follow when filming
It is important that you ‘pre-visualise’ the video before
you make it; it will make filming and production a more
streamlined process
The following tasks are part of your visual planning
Pre-visualisation and concept boards
Storyboarding
Shot list
43. PRE-
VISUALISATION/CONCEP
T BOARDS
Tool for exploring the direction and visuals
Provides inspiration and information for the “look & feel”
Presents key moments in your video
A means to sketch/plan ideas
Information on colour/lighting
Defining the “mise-en-scene”
Include as much here as you like, but keep it relevant to the
production, the following slides have been left blank for you
to approach in your own way, add more as you need to
Extension suggestion: edit a short sequence of clips that
have inspired or influenced your video [similar to this:

47. RIP-O-MATIC
You should also construct a 15-20second Rip-o-matic
test reel using existing footage to convey the type of
video you want to make
48. STRUCTURAL
BREAKDOWN
Breakdown your track into it basic sections [e.g. intro,
verse, chorus, verse, etc] and apply broad visual ideas to
each section
You can use this as the master template for your
production, then add more shots to each section when
you develop your full visual plan
You should create a slide showing all the sections of the
song, then add a slide for each section with timings,
lyrics, what happens and details on specific shots
You could storyboard and shot list each section as you
go, to break up the process.

of what you need to shoot for your video
It should work in partnership with your storyboard
It will be your working document when you film
It should contain the shot number, scene number, shot
description, framing and action you will see
It should also have information on performers in the
scene and other props, etc
Shot list template is on Blackboard in the pre-production
folder.

105. LIP SYNCING SHOTS
Filming for the lip syncing shots went
really smoothly as we had an idea of
what we were doing before we started
filming, so this helped us to get the
filming completed. However, we
weren’t too sure on how the lighting
was going to work as I had planned to
use lighting gels to create the colours,
but we used coloured cellophane
instead. At first we had tried to place
the cellophane in front of the lights but
this did not create the bright colour I
was hoping for. We then decided to
place the cellophane in front of the
lens.
