The Shrimp Improvement Program (SIP) seeks to help transform the shrimp aquaculture industry in Banyuwangi Regency, East Java Province towards more sustainable production. The program focuses on increasing stakeholder capacities, strengthening governance, and developing responsible investment models. Key activities under SIP include developing guidance on best management practices, improving supply chain management and disease reporting, providing training programs, and assessing the carrying capacity of land to support sustainable growth of the sector. The program is supported by various Indonesian government agencies and organizations working to optimize sustainable shrimp production.

Shrimp Improvement Program, Indonesia
1. SHRIMP
IMPROVEMENT
PROGRAM
Indonesian shrimp aquaculture production has increased
substantially over the past five years and is projected to continue
growing. It becomes a significant consideration for Indonesian
Government to put it into the main commodity of marine and
fisheries to support national economy development. To ensure that
growth of the sector can continue without destruction of
ecosystems and habitats, Conservation International, Yayasan
Inisiatif Dagang Hijau, Longline Environment and Sustainable
Fisheries Partnership are collaborating to implement the Shrimp
Improvement Program (SIP).
The program seeks to help transform the shrimp aquaculture
industry towards more sustainable production by increasing
stakeholder capacities, strengthening governance, and
developing responsible investment models in Banyuwangi
Regency, East Java Province. SIP is supported by the Ministry of
Marine Affairs and Fisheries (MMAF), the Government of
Banyuwangi Regency, the Shrimp Club of Indonesia – Banyuwangi
(SCI), the Financial Services Authority (OJK), and academic
institutions.
THIS PROGRAM SEEKS TO PROVIDE SEVERAL BENEFITS, INCLUDING:
Optimizing communication
between farmers, supply
chains, and government
Developing an effective
regional management strategy
Improving capacity on
shrimp disease
mitigation
Increasing investment
in the sector
Providing carrying
capacity analytics and
instruments

Land based model
SWAT is a eco-hydrological model, developed to quantify the impact
of land management practices in large, complex watersheds:
1) Based on the topography, it traces the rivers and respective
watersheds;
2) Adding land use, soil maps, weather data and agriculture
practices, it determines the pollution for each watershed.

Carrying capacity
• Carrying capacity modelling framework
covers a range of issues, time, and space
scales;
• Good models depend on good data, which are
both quantitative (nutrient concentrations,
production rates) and semi-quantitative
(culture practice, mortality ranges);
• Interaction with Indonesian stakeholders is
fundamental for improving quality of models,
and for promoting understanding of their
potential;
• If we want sustainable a aquaculture future in
Indonesia in the next decades, we need good
tools but we also need ‘the app’.
