Graduation internship report faculty of foreign languages Dai Nam university. Firstly, through this internship, I was exposed to the real environment, which helped me gain more experience, get used to the work environment and helped me to improve in my area of specialization. TRANSLATION COMPANY LIMITED
I . INTRODUCTION
1. Profile of the internship place and expectations of the internship:
The name of company is APOLLO Translation Company Limited. It is located in 343
Nguyen Trai, Thanh Xuan, Ha Noi. It is leaded by Mr. Nguyen Van Thu and has gone into
operation recently since March 08,2018.
Apollo Translation Company Limited is one of the leading companies in the field of
researching, developing and providing language services for individuals and enterprises
throughout the country.
With the message “ Top quality, customers above all continuous improvement”, Apollo
always strives to meet the customers’ need and ensures their satisfactions in the best ways.
The company offers translation service in many sectors, including economics,
construction, health, study, finance,... in more than 50 different languages, from common
languages like English, Chinese, Japanese, Korean,... to languages that are rarely used in
Vietnam like Arabic, Hungarian, Swedish, Danish,...
The company offers various services related to language such as translation, interpreting,
notarizing services,... For translation many types of document like study abroad profile,
immigrant profile, economic contract, commercial contract, medical material,... For
interpreting, we fully provide two forms of consecutive interpreting and simultaneous
interpreting. Besides, we also have criminal record check service and visa, consular
service.
2.Expectation of the internship
Internship is a very important activity in the training of knowledge, skills, education for
students in order to improve the quality of students in the future.
Through this internship, I expect some following things:

Firstly, during the time at university, we are trained various knowledge and skills, but most
of them still are theories. I look forward to experiencing the real working environment.
Internship time is the opportunity for me to apply my knowledge in the field to the actual
work environment.
Secondly, It is a translation company and it offers services related to many languages like
Chinese, Korean,Japanese,…. By the internship, I think I will have opportunity to meet
and learn more about those languages.
Finally, translator is a job that I want to do in the future and use it to earn money. When I
practice in a translation company, I hope that I can find the ways to use languages more
flexibly to produce good translations that meet customer’s requirements. I also expect to
be aware of standard translation process and all things concerning translation to serve the
future work.
2.1. Internship duration
This internship project began on February 25, 2019, and will be completed on April 18,
2019. I had 8 weeks in this company for internship. My timetable was from Monday to
Saturday and I got a part-time job so I only was in office in the morning.
Office time: In the morning : from 8h30’ to 11h30’.
II.JOB DESCRIPTION
1.Assigned tasks at internship place.
On the first day, I met my supervisor Ms Hien – vice director at Apollo Company and
discussed about the tasks I had to do during the internship time. As discussed, during
internship at the company, I had to perform two main tasks as following below:
- Translation documents that customers sent to my office.
- Write articles to post on the company’s websites to promote the company’s
image and reputation
The first task, all most the time in the office, I had to translate Vietnamese documents into
English documents and vice verse. Documents I worked on are very diversified in many
sectors and types such as economy, finance, education… In which, I mainly dealt with

documents related to education such as academic records, resume, school report, decisions,
certifications ,… and sometimes I had to translate legal documents, articles, reports. In
every morning, I receive an average of 2-3 orders for translation. I received these
documents from the reception department. After translation was completed, I used email to
send to the edit department. After the edit department had finished the edit period, they
sent final translation to me. And I forwarded them back to the reception department so that
they brought results to a notary office or returned them to customers if they did not need
for notarization.
The second task is to write articles to post on the company's website. Ms Hien guided me
how to write a good article and attract readers (customers) to promote the company. After
being instructed, I had to write articles. After that, I sent it to Mrs. Hien, she checked if the
article was okay and told me to fix which the article was better. I had to write about 3
articles per week. But I could write it at home and just needed 3 articles a week.
In addition, sometimes I had to bring documents to the notary office to notarize for
customers if the reception department was too busy because there were many orders.
2. Favorable conditions and challenges in doing the tasks
The time I spent on practicing is a long time. During this time, there were advantages and
disadvantages in the work which I would like to describe below:
Firstly, through this internship, I was exposed to the real environment, which helped me
gain more experience, get used to the work environment and helped me to improve in my
area of specialization. In addition, reinforce the existing knowledge, apply it to practice
appropriately and learn a lot of practical knowledge and experience. This gives me more
advantages in the process of working after graduation.
Secondly, the language skills learned in school are improved, helping to improve myself.
Through this internship, I could improve my English skills including reading and writing
skills and, especially, use appropriate vocabulary.

Thirdly, all documents concerned various fields, which helped me enhance knowledge
about many other fields such as economics, finance, medial, business,.. I learned many
things. It’s great!
Along with the advantages of the internship there were two challenges that I encountered.
The first challenge was the difference between theoretical knowledge and reality. What I
learned from university was completely different from what I had to do in the company. I
did not have experience in real work and the field I worked in. It made me feel anxious and
decrease my confidence when doing assigned tasks. The second challenge that I had to
face was my limited knowledge. I had to translate many types of documents and they
related to many different fields such as medical, law, administration,...and I did not have
much knowledge about these fields. Therefore, I had difficulties and wasted lots of time
choosing appropriate vocabulary.
3. Basic solution and general achievement.
During the internship, I have addressed several solutions as mentioned below:
Firstly, I had a big gap in knowledge of many fields in my tasks ,so I tried to spend time
studying and accumulating knowledge to fill in this gap. I often visited some websites,
read some documents in both Vietnamese and English regarding to all fields concerning
my job to broaden my knowledge as well as my vocabulary in the fields.
Secondly, when I was in university, I know some knowledge about translation and types of
translated texts so I could manage to translate texts on my own first. When the confusion
of some ideas presented in the texts came, I first searched related information on Google.
Then I tried my best to comprehend the texts. Moreover, I asked my instructor for advice
and suggestion.
Thirdly, I have participated in several translation groups on face-book, and have some
friends who have translation experiences. When I had problems or encountered difficult
topics, I would ask the translators or experienced friends to ask and seek for advice on how
to translate.

III. JOB RESULTS AND PERSONAL EXPERIENCES
1. Personal assessment of job results and experiences
After a period of practicing at the company, I have achieved remarkable results, things
that I do not think I can do, but now I can do well such as learning from experience,
acquiring a lot of new knowledge to bring more advantages for the future work.
Moreover, I complete all assignments. I had a high sense of responsibility for tasks I was
assigned and I thought that it was quite good. In particular, I always finished all tasks
before the deadline.
After practicing here, I realized that my translation ability was better than before. I have
been exposed to many types of documents so my vocabulary and knowledge have
increased.
Although I have only been working for 2 months, I have always finished work well. I
consider this internship as a step for me to be ready to start the my job in the future. What
the matter now is gaining experiences and improving my knowledge as much as I can.
2. Effectiveness of knowledge, skill and attitude obtained at the university in doing
internship task.
Based on my assignments, I have recognized and appreciated several useful aspects that I
was learning at university. They were namely translation method, the process of
translation, types of translated texts.
2.1. Translation methods
The first method is word – for – word translation : With this method, the translator will
proceed to change the original language into the translated language by translating
sequentially from word to word and sentence to sentence. This method is only effective
when both the original and the target sentences have a similarity in sentence structure
between the two languages. ( Ngoc Huong, Tuan Anh, Thu Huong, 2003).
The second is literal translation. When using the full-text translation method, the
grammatical structure of the original language is transferred to the nearest structure of the
translated language, but the vocabulary is translated in the most common sense, but

contextual black. This method is also suitable for use when the word-for-word translation
method makes the sentence obscure. ( Ngoc Huong, Tuan Anh, Thu Huong, 2013).
The third is faithful translation. It can be described as one kind of translation which tries to
convey the meaning of words and context situation according to the grammar rules of the
target language, however, there is some unusuality or unnatuaralness in the target
language. ( Ngoc Huong, Tuan Anh, Thu Huong, 2013).
The forth one is semantic translation which focuses to a great degree on meaning (
semantic content ) and form of the original texts of high status such as religious texts, legal
texts, literature, or speeches. Using this strategy, the translator tries to come as close as
possible to the meaning conveyed by the words by mean of word order change or word
choice so that the true meaning is conveyed. ( Ngoc Huong, Tuan Anh, Thu Huong, 2013).
The fifth is communicative translation. It is freer than the above – mentioned types. This
strategy gives high priority to the message communicated in the text where the actual form
of the original is not closely bound to its intended meaning. ( Ngoc Huong, Tuan Anh, Thu
Huong, 2013).
The sixth is free translation. As indicated by the word “ free”, free translation focuses more
on content than form in the target language, as a result, sometimes the grammar structure
or the form of the words in the target language may change, the number of words and the
sentence length may vary, depending on the subjectivity of the translator when adds
explanation or comment to make clear the meaning of the original. ( Ngoc Huong, Tuan
Anh, Thu Huong, 2013).

There are three main steps in a process and translation namely Approaching a text,
Interpreting the source text, Formulating the translated text, Review and comparison,
Editing the translated text/Final draft.

Within two months I have gained many valuable experiences as well as lessons at Apollo
Translation Company. Firstly, the internship enabled me to experience real situations
where any problem can happen and it required me to apply my knowledge and skill to
solve them. Consequently, I had a chance to realize my problem-solving skill.
Secondly, I had an opportunity to broaden my knowledge of various fields that I have not
known before. I knew many new words and terms about many fields such as health,
culture, politic,etc. Thus, I could diversity my vocabulary.
Finally, two months off internship helped me to force myself under the discipline “ on
time”, both at work and for the deadline. And one of remarkable skills that I obtained from
the internship was skills to write a promotional post. I felt grateful to Mrs Hien for
dedicatedly instructing me to write an attractive post. She gave me a chance to cultivate
my writing skill.
IV. RECOMMENDATION:
1. Differences between knowledge, skills and attitude gained at the university and
those from the internship:
During the practice time, the difference between the knowledge learned and the practice at
the company is quite great. When entering the business internship the distance from the
theory learned at the university to the actual work as not small:
Firstly, I learned that the academic environment differs from the working environment. At
university, I can both learn and play. This helps me gain knowledge quickly and
effectively. In contrast, the internship gives me a serious environment, where working time
is just for work and playing time is just for play. Actually, I was assigned to translate many
documents during my working time, or if there were no texts to translate, I was assigned to
do other tasks, so there was no time to play anymore.
Secondly, during the internship at Apollo, I have discovered one skill using for translating
which is different between academic and internship. It is the skill to translate with Google
Translate tool. When learning and practicing translating, my teachers did not allow us to
use this tool frequently since they were afraid that we could be depended on it. Otherwise,

as working in the company, I usually have to use Google translation tool to support my
translation. Without it, I think I cannot meet the deadline because the number of texts for
translating is two many. Now I know how to use this tool to produce the most natural
translations.
2. Suggestions on the possible ways to fill the gaps between academic abilities and
real-life work
After eight weeks at Apollo Translation Company Limited, I would like to propose some
suggestions for the university:
First, organizing group work activities is important. In my opinion, that is an effective way
to help students become more active as well as understand how to work in groups.
Second, school and faculty should provide opportunities for students to learn more about
translation and interpreting. If it is possible, so students can have the opportunity to
interact with foreigners.
Finally, the real-life work requires students to have many skills to be able to fulfill all
tasks. Therefore, I recommend that the faculty should coordinate with the school to pay
more attention to research showing which skills are really needed by different sectors. An
awareness of requires skills will benefit students from completing the tasks more quickly
and more effectively.
