ABSTRACT
This research studies on “ANALYZING THE LEVEL OF ENGLISH USAGE
AT MCV COMPANY”. The participants are 30 officers working at MCV. The
researcher used mix methods such as quantitative and qualitative for this study.
Questionnaire with 5 items and interviews with 2 items are selected as instruments
for this research. The findings of the study showed that English usage in the
company is average. The staff recognizes the importance of English at work,
however, not all positions require English, only those holding key positions such as
director, deputy director, and heads of departments required to know how to use
English, other positions are not required for employees to use English. The study
also shows that employees who know how to use English are often assigned more
jobs, get higher wages, and work more efficiently. The study has a significant
contribution to English teachers and students in their teaching and learning

CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION
This chapter will present general information about the thesis, which includes the
problem statement, rationale of the study, aims of the study and significance of the
study.
1.1 The problem statement
Knowing a foreign language, especially English, will change your job in very
positive ways. First, foreign languages help us to be more confident in interviews.
For a person who cannot use a foreign language, the search for recruitment
information will be greatly reduced by eliminating jobs that require foreign
languages. On the contrary, if you are proficient in foreign languages, the
employment opportunities are greatly expanded in attractive positions. Second,
foreign languages give us many career development opportunities. If you have to
travel abroad or talk to a foreign expert, someone who knows foreign languages will
be the preferred one. Therefore, the opportunity to develop yourself, career
development will open up more for people with foreign languages in accordance
with job requirements. In addition, to develop your career, you need to go through a
lot of situations using foreign languages such as meetings, presentations,
negotiations, So, if you do not have a foreign language, especially in dynamic
environments, you will have to accept that you will be left back at work. Third,
foreign languages help us progress faster at work. It is difficult for an employee who
does not speak a foreign language to acquire deeper and higher specialized
knowledge with foreign documents. Fourth, foreign languages help us have higher
incomes. In fact, in Vietnam, Job streets has released a survey that 95% of
employers are willing to pay up to 30% higher for English-speaking candidates. For
a person who does not know a foreign language, the starting point of income is also
8. 2
lower than that of a person who can both complete a professional job and be fluent
in a foreign language. In the process of working too, if you can undertake the jobs
requiring foreign languages, then obviously, the salary increase will be higher than
those who do not know foreign languages.
We all know the benefits of knowing and using English at workplace. However,
statistics show that only 5% of the Vietnamese labor force speaks fluent English,
mentioned by Simon Matthews, General Manager of Manpower Group Vietnam,
Thailand and the Middle East. Accordingly, Vietnam needs to upgrade its English
skills for its workforce to prepare for the increasing human resource needs of private
companies and foreign-invested enterprises in Vietnam.
1.2 Rationale of the study
In the modernization period, English is no longer a "plus" factor; it is gradually
becoming a mandatory tool to work. More and larger corporations in the world force
their employees to use English, considering English as a corporate language. But the
sad fact now is that only 1/3 of global businesses speak English at an amateur level.
Traditional learning methods in classes and English language centers are not optimal
solutions because they are expensive and time-consuming when employees cannot
arrange regular class time. Employees are not motivated to attend for a long period
of time as they are often entangled in individual schedules, or overtime work and
unexpected schedules.
Understanding the importance of English as well as the problems that employees are
facing at workplace, the researcher studies about “Analyzing The Level Of English
9. 3
Usage At MCV Company” with the hope that the researcher will find out the current
situation of MCV employees about using English and provide solutions for them to
improve English proficiency.
1.3 Aims of the study
The aims of this study were to identify the level of English at MCV Company and
give some recommendations to improve English capacity of the employee at MCV
Company. Thus, the specific aims of the study are to answer the following
questions:
1. What is the level of English usage at MCV Company?
2. How to improve English capacity of the employees at MCV Company?
1.4 Significance of the study
This research will help both learners and English teachers.
For learners, the results of this research show them the importance of learning
English as well as the benefits of using English in the real environment, working
environment. From there, it contributes to creating more motivation for students to
learn English and study in the direction of application because this is not just a
subject for the exam.
10. 4
With the instructors, they also see the fact that English will be used in the real
environment, and thus, the instructor will guide the way of teaching in an applied
way, instead of just teaching in theory.

2.2 Overview about English Language
According to Crystal and Potter, English is the West Germanic language of the
Indo-European language family closely related to the Frisian, German and Dutch
languages. English has origin of England and is the primary language of many
countries such as the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Ireland,
New Zealand and various island nations in the Caribbean and Pacific Ocean. In
addition, English is the official language of India, the Philippines, Singapore and
many countries in sub-Saharan Africa, including South Africa. English is the
language chosen as the second language in most other countries of the world, and
this has given English language the position of a global language. It is estimated that
about one third of the world's populations currently use English.
Also according to Nordquist (2020), the term "English" is derived from Anglisc. The
English language is the main language of several countries, including Australia,
Canada, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and many of its former colonies, and
the United States, and the second language in some multilingual countries including
India, Singapore, and the Philippines. This is the official language in some African
countries, such as Liberia, Nigeria and South Africa, but is used worldwide for more
than 100. Children around the world learn English as a foreign language. English
often becomes a common language among people of different nationalities when
they meet when traveling, doing business or in other contexts.
Tony Reilly (2012) stated in the British Sunday Times newspaper "English Changes
Lives" that there are about 1.5 billion English speakers worldwide, whereas 375
million who speak English as their first language, 375 million people are the second
language and 750 million speak English as a foreign language
13. 7
2.3 The importance of English in general
Sneddon (2003), English is a global language; it plays an important role in
international interaction, including economic relations between countries,
international business relations, global trade and other countries. In international
interaction, English is almost always considered a global language because it is used
to communicate between different people from different countries. Besides, English
plays an important role in our daily lives; it brings a lot of utility in the modern
world. Specifically,
In business, English is widely used by the international business community.
English is essential because it is used to communicate across national borders
and maintain correspondence with business partners or professionals abroad.
In education, English plays an important role in higher education and
specialized training. English is used for writing and translating in most books
on any topic. Education in most universities and higher education institutes
around the world sees English as a medium of instruction.
In terms of employment, English is essential for a good job and a better
salary. Multinational business organizations and many international
corporations require people with good working knowledge of English. Those
who are traveling abroad also need to know English. English is required for a
variety of jobs such as flight attendants, pilots, tour guides, media managers,
etc.
For information, English is the language of information technology and the
internet. In the world with so much information nowadays, English is
essential for us to easily access any information because almost any available
information is in English.
14. 8
In Media and Entertainment, English is a very important tool to help us reach
the world’s media and entertainment. Satellite channels around the world
transmit news in English. Games and sports are broadcast live and
commented in English. Movie theaters, cartoons and other media products are
also in English.
The English language is widely used in formal communication, so the
abolition of English will adversely affect office work. Most office workers
know English, but many of them do not speak languages other than their
mother tongue or regional languages. So they communicate with each other
in English for their daily work. Therefore, if the office workers are asked to
stop using English, they will have a great challenge.
For international relations, English is very important to maintain international
relations and communication because it is the language of diplomacy,
international politics and meetings and conferences.
In Kenneally's book "The First Word", there are about 6,000 languages in the
world and only 10 languages are spoken by half of the world, of which
English is the most widely spoken of 10 languages, “British colonialism
initiated the spread of English across the globe; it has been spoken nearly
everywhere and has become even more prevalent since World War II, with
the global reach of American power.”
2.4 The importance of English at workplace
Learning a foreign language has become a trend for any young person. Simply
because you only speak your mother tongue, you may lose the opportunity to work
in multinational companies and reduce your ability to compete directly with
candidates who are fluent in other languages. About ten years ago, foreign language
learning was only seen in regular classes at high schools under the guidance of
15. 9
Vietnamese teachers, learning ways focused too much on grammar, machinery and
learning, which make students to consider learning a foreign language as a "torture",
after class, students easily forget because it is not applied in practice. Now, the
application of English to work is required most in the company, in the workplace,
learning is becoming more practically because it is very important in the workplace.
With the current open and integrated economy, more and more foreign
enterprises are investing in Vietnam market, bringing many job opportunities
for young workers.
Foreign language is also considered as a bridge of languages between
countries around the world, which has a positive effect in exchanging and
cooperating with people of other countries.
When you are good at foreign languages, especially English, it is an
advantage that helps you have more opportunities to enter companies. We can
take a specific example in recent years: there are graduates with good grades
and have applied for jobs in foreign businesses and companies. They have
gone through very good tests on specialized knowledge but because of the
lack of English skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing), they were
unable to pass the foreign language test. As a result, they lost their chance to
apply for a job. It is a very unfortunate problem for such students but it is also
the lessons for the generations to follow.
If you have good foreign language, you can learn more knowledge by
attending the events, presentations from experts.

CHAPTER 3: METHODOLOGY
3.1 Data gathering instruments
The tools used for the study are from different types including survey questionnaires
and interviews.
Regarding the survey questionnaires, the survey is a tool for collecting
primary information for scientific research. This study aims to provide
students with a thorough knowledge of the questionnaire design and to obtain
sufficient information in the survey. In order to have the best survey results,
the researcher have a complete and logical questionnaire consisting of two
parts. They are basic information and main ideas about their English usages
in which the questionnaires are made very clear for the interviewee to
understand and respond accurately to all questions. Therefore, this requires
the researcher to understand the design of the survey. To provide students
with a better understanding of how to design the survey, the paper will
analyze the sequence of steps and some issues to consider when designing the
survey. Questionnaire follows Likert scale design. Thus, it ranges from one
to five points. For instance: 1: Totally disagree; 2: Disagree; 3: Neutral; 4:
Agree and 5: Totally agree.
In term of interviews, In addition to the above methods, interviews are also
used in order to gain more detailed information of the survey and give the
studied subjects a chance to express all thoughts and opinions naturally and
freedom. In this way, the researcher once again gets the information he wants
to research and confirms the answers from the survey or the tests.
17. 11
3.2 Settings for the study
This thesis deals with “Analyzing The Level Of English Usage At MCV Company”,
so the author focuses on the English language proficiency of MCV employees at the
MCV headquarters in 16th Floor - TNR Building, 54A Nguyen Chi Thanh, Lang
Thuong Ward, Dong Da District, Ha noi City, Viet Nam
3.3 Participants’ information
Attendees include directors, managers and employees, regardless of gender, age,
salary and position. In total, only 30 employees participated in the survey and
interview. In which, 30 people participated in the survey, 10 representatives of
departments interviewed for the research results.
3.4 Data collection procedures
After appointing the company for the research about the English usage status of
employees at the company, the researcher arrived at the appointed time and
conducted the survey and interview. The survey is done first, the interview is done
later.
In term of the survey, the purpose of this survey is to obtain information
about English proficiency of staff here. It is organized in the biggest room of
MCV. All 30 participants were invited in the room, and then the researcher
introduced about the purpose of the survey, gave instructions, delivered the
form to participants. During the survey, participants are also advised to do it
independently, show their correct information, and be assured that all
18. 12
personal information and information shown in the survey are kept
confidential. After 10 minutes, all questionnaires (5 items) were collected, the
researcher started to conduct the interviews with 10 representatives.
Regarding the interviews, the purpose of the interviews is to confirm the
main idea of what the author wants to get in the survey. For the interviews,
individuals are invited to the room to directly answer questions prepared by
the researcher. Because of the lack of time, only 10 representatives
participated in the interview, each was invited to the room to give interviews
to ensure the privacy of participants. Because time does not allow, each
person will have 5 minutes to answer 2 interview questions. In order for the
answers to be highly accurate, the interviewer also creates a positive
atmosphere for the participants to feel comfortable answering the questions,
and the participants are also advised to express their thoughts honestly
because their answers are also confidential. In addition, all answers were
carefully recorded.
3.5 Data analysis
The researcher analyzed the data basing on collected surveys and interviews.
For the surveys, after getting the data, the results were processed into an
Excel sheet to produce the percentage for each question.
For the interviews, all questions were seperated basing on the main points.
After getting all main points from surveys and interviews, the researcher made
comparisons and have answer for the level of English usage at MCV Company.
19. 13
CHAPTER 4: FINDINGS
After analyzing the results from surveys and interviews, the researcher has the result
about the level of English usage at MCV Company, the findings of the study showed
that English usage in the company is average.
Firstly, the level of English required for key positions is not high, candidates
only need to know how to communicate, so the ability to read and understand
information of documents or contracts in English is very limitations, the
ability to communicate in writing is also very limited
Secondly, staff's English proficiency is not equal and there is a big difference
in English proficiency between them. Specifically, only the key positions that
require English when recruiting, the normal employee positions do not even
have English requirements.
Thirdly, the English language in the company is not focused much, the
normal employee positions hardly use English, so employees are not trained
to upgrade their English knowledge and encouraged to study. When meeting
with foreign partners or foreign customers, employees often have to rely on
the support of key leaders, which makes the work process passively
completed.
20. 14
CHAPTER 5: DISCUSSION
From the limitations of English that the company is facing, the company should take
measures to improve the English proficiency of its employees, to serve the work
progress and global development of the company. Specifically,
In terms of recruitment, the company should require English proficiency of
employees; important positions should require all 4 skills such as listening,
speaking, reading and writing from good level. Normal positions also require
4 skills such as listening, speaking, reading and writing from basic level.
In order to improve the English proficiency of its current employees, the
company should have foreign language training for its employees. For leaders
who are in desperate need of language improvement, the company should
have special training courses for them to accelerate language skills
development in a short period of time. As for employees, the company should
have basic and regular training courses for employees to study and improve
their language knowledge.
In addition, the company should create an English working environment, can
use the system language in English, and encourage employees to study and
use English regularly.
21. 15
CHAPTER 6: CONCLUSION
6.1 Summary of key findings
From the research information, the researcher answered two questions that were
posed at the beginning of the paper.
In the first question, the English proficiency of the staff at MCV is assessed
as average. The company does not require employees to have English
proficiency when recruiting, so the English level of employees is also
uneven, this affects the company's work process when dealing with jobs that
are related to the English language.
In the second question, in order to improve the English proficiency of
employees based on the actual situation of the company, the researcher also
has some suggestions. Firstly, the company should add English as one of the
conditions required for hiring because if employees can use English, jobs
related to English will be handled proactively. Besides, the company should
also create conditions for leaders and employees to learn English to improve
their English proficiency through training or English courses. And finally, the
company should encourage employees to use English by creating a bilingual
work environment, and it is best to use as much English as possible.
6.2 Implications
The findings of this study have important implications for researcher, company
leaders and employees.
22. 16
For researcher, researcher will see the features of English at work; understand
the importance and contribution of English in the workplace.
For company leaders, this study gives the company's leadership a better
overview of the level of English used at the company, the current level of
employees' English, from which the Company will have strategies to improve
English for employees to ensure the long-term operation of the company.
For employees, besides the importance of English at work, employees will
identify their English skills so that they can practice to improve the level of
English so that they can always successfully complete the assigned tasks, as
well as be more active in the face of English information or even confidently
communicate when meeting with foreign partners.
23. 17
6.3 Limitations and directions for future research
Although the researcher tried to get as much data as possible to get accurate results,
the results were still very limited, most notably limited in terms of space, time to
conduct research, participants and Previous studies for reference.
In terms of space, this study was only done at MCV Company, not outside
the MCV site, so the objectivity was not too high.
In terms of time, research time is very limited, only 5 minutes for interviews
and 10 minutes for surveys. The researcher cannot ask many questions to
gain a lot of information for the research. The participant cannot give more
details for answers with limited time.
Regarding the participants, only 30 people can arrange to take the survey
(only 10 people for the interview), because the others still have work, so the
answers are for reference only, can not demonstrate for the whole MCV.
And finally, for the reference data, no research has been done at MCV yet, so
the researcher doesn't have any information to compare to make this paper
much more interesting.
24. 17
6.4 Final words
This essay was completed thanks to many factors, including the effort of the
researcher, the devoted advice of the teacher, the enthusiastic support of the whole
MCV. However, this study will be difficult to avoid shortcomings; the researcher
expects to receive sincere suggestions from the school, the company and readers if
there are any shortcomings.
