The main focus point of this image is the five
characters in the center of the image. These
particular characters are very popular in the
show, the iconism of the characters have been
used to advertise the show on the cover, so
people familiar with the show would be able to
recognise it.
The technical codes, such as font style, is very
stylish and sharp, which contrasts to the medieval
times which is when the show is set, as royals
were a big and important thing in those times.
The clothing choice also symbolises and highlights
the time period. The blue connotations on the
female characters symbolise power, as these
particular characters are shown to have power in
the show, and the black connotation on the male
on the top could highlight bravery, and looks as if
the character is a solider, and him being on the
top could also highlight that he is superior to the
other characters.
Existing Product #1 Second Slide
The lighting in this image is relatively dark even though it is
shown to be daytime, and it does have a little bit of a dim
tint to it. This could once again contrast to the time period,
as the medieval times were also know for a lot of deaths
and murders ordered by those in power.
A lot of the cover is taken up by text, one of the main
captions of the cover being ‘Game On!’, which is also a
reference to the shows title, and will once again familiarise
with people who watch the show, and also engage others
who haven’t, making them wonder what the show might be
about. The caption also portrays excitement with the use of
an exclamation mark and big bold letters, which would also
make viewers engage in the show.
Existing Product #2
The main part of this cover is the large
‘Ghostface’ mask around the middle of the
image, which highlights immediately that the
main focus point of this magazine is going to
be the film Scream. This is once again
highlighted in the caption ‘Scream Returns!’
which is the second biggest text on the cover,
therefore we know that it will be an important
subject in this magazine.
The red connotation in the background could
be symbolic of the gore and violence in the
Scream films, as they are known to have a gory
and murder theme. Another reason I chose
this image is because of how simple the colour
and lighting scheme are. The lighting is very
simplistic, there are areas of light and dark
around the mask and cloak, as well as the red
background. The black connotation around the
eyes and moth make the mask look very
hollow, as if resembling a real ghost.
Existing Product #2 Second Slide
One addition that is missing from the front cover is the bar
code. This is perhaps because they did not want to spoil the
artwork on the front and wanted to give the cover a very
clean look, so they placed it on the back cover.
The location is absent in this cover and a red background
has been used to fill up the space. This maybe because they
wanted the main ‘Ghostface’ character to stand out and be
the main focus point of the whole cover. Those who enjoy
the horror genre and the Scream movies would recognize
the cover as well as show interest in it. The audience appeal
will also effect those who are interested in horror films in
general, as Scream is a popular film in the horror genre.
Existing Product #3
This magazine cover has an overall blue
connotation to it, as well as a mix of bright and
dark lighting, which gives the image more depth
and also makes the main characters in the
image stand out more. The character in the
front stands out more, and is a lot brighter than
the other characters, which could suggest that
he is the main character and is important in the
film. For those that are interested in the X-Men
films, this cover will immediately stand out to
them, as these characters are important and
well know in the films, as well as having the title
of the film in big bold letters, so people will
recognize it.
The main focus point of this whole cover is the
‘X-Men’. This highlights that the films are going
to be an important subject in this magazine, as
well as referencing other films in the franchise.
Existing Product #3 Second Slide
The composition in this photo is set up with three
characters in the middle. This could suggest that these
specific three characters are going to be the most talked
about, and used as iconism to promote the magazine, as
these characters and actors / actress are very popular.
The cover also promotes exclusive content that will be
found in the magazine, which is a good method of
marketing the product, making fans want to purchase the
product. The fonts are fairly simple, and some words are
given a golden colour, which blends well with the overall
blue theme with the characters and background.
Research Analysis
• What common features do the researched products have?
– Each of these researched products feature characters from the films that are
important and iconic to promote the magazine, and so people will recognize
them and be familiar with the films. Each of these products show the brand
identity ‘Empire’ as Empire are a very popular source for movie / cinema
magazines. This will therefor attract people to buy the product, as it is made
by a trusted, reliable and popular brand. Each one of these product uses
different methods to reach their target audience, for example, the Scream
magazine uses the iconic image of ‘Ghostface’ to attract horror fans and those
who are interested in the horror genre overall. The organisation of each of the
products are relatively the same. All of them feature text specifying the movie,
as well as the contents inside the magazine e.g. interviews.
• What aspects of the research will you include within your
on work?
– My product is definitely going to use main characters & celebrity
icons from different films to advertise and promote it, as well as
a similar text layout scheme to the three products I have
chosen. I am also going to use a similar lighting and colour
theme as the ones in my research.
