2. Existing Product
My final major project will be a ‘Film
magazine’. I will be researching 'Empire
magazines'. Why I will be doing this is
because it is a respected long standing
publication. How I will be able to
research this is through a variety of
issues from the past to the present time.
The magazine creates meaning to the
target audience by the use of bold
colours against a dramatic display of
images. These appeal to a primary
audience who is solely interested in
superheroes and a secondary audience
who are just interested in the artwork
on the front cover and within the
publication itself. My product will have
a variety of colours, plus upcoming
releases, and will be a based upon a
superhero magazine similar to that of
3. Tagline:
The coverline as
'Spider-Man is in
bold font which will
intrigue the
audience.
Character:
The main
character of
the magazine
is Spider-Man
and this
masculinity is
aimed at a
male audience.
Bar code:
It is visible but without obscuring the view
of the images or texts on the magazine. It
is located in the same position consistently.
Company:
The Masthead is in
white to make it
bold, striking and
appealing to the
audience behind the
main character.
Releases: Upcoming releases on the front cover
of the magazine, below the Masthead will
both advertise movies/series releases that will
be coming out that year, and to intrigue the
audience.
4. Existing Product
My 'Final Major Project' will be a ‘Film
magazine’ so I will be researching ‘Total
Film’. Within this issue the image is
dramatic against a dark background with
advising the readers what is in the
magazine with a multitude of
'coverlines'. The white and yellow text
really stands out to make a bold
statement for the reader. The
Masthead is obscured with the actors'
image, but due to its long standing
reputation, readers will know this
product.
The visual image of this front cover is
male orientated, and everything is well
spaced and not obscured.
5. Tagline:
In this example it
is about ‘Black
Adam’. The colour
scheme, including
the font is designed
to draw the
reader's attention
to this area.
Character:
The central
image used of a
body shot of a
famous actor,
enables the
magazine to
establish its
intimidating
theme.
Upcoming releases:
The subheadings are in the
same font to continue the
theme. The smaller text
makes them noticeable and
relevant to the magazine
genre.
Company:
The Masthead is shown
as white against a dark,
moody backdrop for
maximum sinister effect.
6. Existing Product
An established company
such as 'Empire' uses
boldness with the central
images, as it creates a
feeling that the reader is
being looked at and draws
them into the magazine.
My central image for my
project will be like this
opposite.
This will be based upon
these bold colours, fonts,
descriptions and striking
images of famous celebrities
or super-hero characters.
7. Upcoming releases:
The upcoming releases are
contrasted between red and
white bold font text in order to
make them dynamic and
Tagline:
This is what the
magazine is about
and whom it is aimed
at. It suggest the
content and features
within the magazine.
Header:
Illustrates on the front
cover extra information
about what the magazine
holds. In this example, the
upcoming movie to be
released and mentions the
director of that movie. (J.J.
Abrams).
Company:
The magazine is
called 'Empire'. The
Masthead is easily
recognisable and
noticeable, and the
white bold lettering
stands out against
the contrasting
background.
Character:
The character is prominent
on the front cover and is a
celebrity who is easily
recognisable. Iron Man will
be the main topic on the
double page spread of this
magazine.
8. Existing Product
Here is another example of a front cover
from 'Total Film' Magazine. This example
is dark and mysterious by showing the main
characters from the James Bond 'No Time
to Die Movie'.
The same characteristics as in other issues
have been used again, by way of the actors
being prominent, with the font for the text
being big and bold in a contrasting colour
against a dark background.
The Coverlines are in a different text and
colour to the main text, as to make them
stand out and noticeable to the reader.
These methods make the magazine
attractive and interesting for people to
read it.
9. Tagline:
The main title
for the magazine.
This will be bold
and dramatic as
the main topic on
the double page
spread.
Character: The main
characters of this
magazine are famous
celebrities. Their
images together with
the title of the movie
will attract attention
to the magazine.
Company:
The Masthead is
behind the
actors. 'Total Film'
is in bold large
font.
This gives the cover
a dramatic image.
Upcoming releases:
These are
alternating in
colour as to attract
the attention of the
reader.
10. Contrasting a 1940's Double Page Spread to the
present
The above double page spread is in a magazine from the 1940's. It
displays the image of the train, buildings and landscape in the
classic Art Deco theme.
From this period, there is positivity in the message " A new era
dawns in transportation". The people from this era are always
depicted as cheerful, happy and promote positivity.
11. The imagery would have to be hand drawn and created as art, as there was no
digital imagery during this period, and the process to produce it into a magazine
would have taken considerable time.
Now, the image could be made quickly and easily by using a variety of software
tools in a short time, as the image could be instantly uploaded from an SD Card or
from the internet, and the design corrected using digital imaging software tools
such a Photoshop Software.
This software would allow the user to alter the shapes, import images, erase with
ease, use the multi-variation of colours with the palette option in the colour bucket,
and use the magic wand tool for cropping the images with ease and precision.
The time to create a double page spread now to that of one in the 1940's would
take a fraction of time, due to the advancement in technology and now
living in a society whereby everyone wants everything to be instant.
