5. The overall blue colour links in with the ocean theme.
The blue connotation is also usually referenced as a
good colour, therefore we can establish that the
character in the middle is the protagonist. The fact
that this character is in the middle of the poster also
suggests that he is a superior / important character in
the film. The trident is also used as iconography of
particular genres / characters, such as a king, to
highlight to the viewer that this character must be
important, as he is wielding something powerful. The
poster is very active, a lot is happening and there is a
lot of movement, which links in with the tag line
‘Home is calling’, which could possibly suggest that
they are moving to the location that they are been
called too, in this case ‘home’. The main character in
this poster is portrayed as a God like character. This
is highlighted as we see his clothes and staff, which
are very metallic and God like. Furthermore the
vicious creatures such as the sharks, don’t seem to
want to attack / hurt him, which also could link in with
his God like personality.
AQUAMAN
6. The dark, gloomy overall theme of this poster
suggests to the audience that this is going to be a
scary and inappropriate film for children. This
poster gives off an ambiance feeling as the main
character in the poster is wearing a mask. The
mask is very sinister and evil looking which
suggests to the audience that this is bad
character / antagonist. The mask also juxtaposes
the genre of the film, as a happy face Is not
usually associated with the common horror
movie. The feeling of the unknown is also
portrayed in this poster as the only
distinguishable human feature of this character is
his / hers eyes, which gives a sense of
dominance as the character is staring in an evil
manner. The hashtag, ‘Survive the night’ at the
bottom of the poster also tells the audience that
the film is likely to have gore, violence and
murder in it, and is also a use of the hypodermic
needle, as the audience are most likely to believe
that this is a horror film from the tagline. The
poster also has a gritty / scratchy overlay, which
could also be symbolism for the gore and un
comfort the film provides to it’s audience.
THE PURGE
7. The first image we see in this poster is a
character that appears to be stood behind
blurred glass. The first indication we see that this
is possibly an antagonist is an evil looking pig
mask. The colours in this poster are very stale
and dim, which could represent the theme of the
film, as it is part of a franchise that is known for
violence. The fact that this character is looking
down highlights that he / her is superior, and
could be looking down on their victims.
Furthermore, the character is wearing a mask,
which could also highlight the fear of the
unknown, leaving the audience wondering who
is behind the mask which links in with horror and
superstition. The pig mask could also be a
method of iconography, as the mask is a popular
icon in the franchise, making people feel familiar
with the genre when they see the poster. The
poster also has a grunge / dirty overlay, which
could be symbolic for the gore and horror the
film has to offer.
JIGSAW
8. Soundtrack
Clip 1
The music rises building up tension,
which could suggest a deadline or the
possible climax of a situation. This
connotes a suspense theme, or perhaps
a hostile situation, where something is
about to happen to one of the characters,
or both.
Clip 2
This second music clip also gives a
sense of romantic tension in which
highlights to the audience that the two
characters are connected with each other
in some way. There is a positive theme to
this music which could also be symbolic
of the relationship between these two
characters.
9. Shining
The use of different, calm, happy music gives it a
more friendly atmosphere and makes the viewer
feel as if this film is appropriate for younger
audiences. The use of a positive sounding voice
over also gives it more of a romantic comedy film,
as well as the smooth transitions that you would
not see in a horror movie trailer. All of the
disturbing images and scenes were cut out to
make it appear more appropriate and family
friendly, as well as the music, dialogue and sound
effects choice.
10. Scary Mary
The colour, music and editing have all been
changed in a manner that appears to be like a
horror film. For instance, the trailer is very dark,
and the outdoor scenes are all at night which is a
common technique used in horror films. The
editor has portrayed the character of Mary
Poppins to be more sinister by taking unusual
footage from the original film and giving it a more
scary tune, for instance the mirror scene is
portrayed as funny in the original film, but
disturbing in this trailer.

18. Clip Analysis
There are contrasts of good and evil in this clip, as represented with Darth
Vader’s overall black and red theme, and the good characters blue theme.
This highlights the two connotations, good and evil, by using lighting and
costume choice, blue being good, and red being bad. The clip is very active,
there is always a lot of things going on, such as the secondary good and
bad characters fighting in the background of the main fight, which highlights
how dramatic the situation is. The use of music also gives us a sense of
despair and dread, as it contrasts the bad situation the good characters are
in, and has a very threatening vibe to it. The still camerawork and editing on
Darth Vader conveys to the audience that he is very calm and in control,
where as the camerawork and editing on the good characters has a lot
more movement than Darth Vader’s. This could highlight how the good
characters are feeling worried and scared. Furthermore, the camera is
higher up when Darth Vader is in the frame, this could also highlight how he
is in control of the situation, and he is superior the the good characters. The
set and lighting overall is very dark which highlights the situation the good
characters are in, and gives the audience a sense of evil, as darkness is
usually referred to as a negative effect.
