3. FILM MAGAZINE RESEARCH
Entertainment-
The magazine features celebrities and iconic characters on the cover and addresses topics such as television
ratings, movie grosses, production costs, concert ticket sales, ad budgets, and in-depth articles about scheduling,
producers and showrunners. The Entertainment magazine features all major releases for that week, as well as some
independent films that have been released. Although more recently Entertainment magazine has focused on action
and comedy films, they have also done horror films in the past.
The magazine sells 9 million print copies of the magazine and 16 million digital copies, Because of this the estimated
age range of those that buy Entertainment magazine could be anywhere from 16 – 80+ years old. This is because
films are very diverse among their target audience, therefore the magazine itself would also have to have a diverse
audience appeal to make money.
Because of the research above I have come to the conclusion that Entertainment magazine may not be the best fit
for our film. This is due to the current film genre the magazine mainly focuses towards, action and comedy, which
are very different to what our film is going to be, a teen horror.
4. Empire-
Empire reviews both mainstream films and art films. The Empire magazine features all major releases, as well as
some independent film, same as the Entertainment magazine. Empire magazine has a very diverse film focus point,
where as with Entertainment magazine the front cover main focus was action or comedy film based, Empire does a
range of different film genres.
The magazine ‘Empire online can boast proudly 1.7 million UU and 12 million page impressions.’ Because of this I can
tell that the magazine is very successful and well known, which means that they would sell millions of online and
paper copies of the magazine. Because of this the target age range for the magazine will be very similar to
Entertainments, at 16 to 80+ years old, however due to the more diverse film genres the magazine looks at it will
have a larger target audience.
Because of the research above I have come to the conclusion that Empire magazine would fit our film genre. This is
due to the diversity at which the magazine focuses at, doing all film genres. It also has a very large target audience,
which will allow for more people to become aware of our film.

5. Scream-
The magazine are the ‘WORLDS NUMBER ONE PRINT & DIGITAL HORROR MAGAZINE’. Covering films, celebrity
interviews, games, comics and lots more horror related items. This relates well to our film as our genre is a teen
horror.
The magazine sells at WHSmiths, HMV and many other shops in the USA, Canada, Ireland and the UK. This allows
for the magazine front cover to be seen over a large proportion of the world, getting films that are on the cover
well known. Also its marketing directly to the audience that would want to watch our film, horror fans.
Because of the research above I have come to the conclusion that Scream magazine would fit our film genre.
Very well. This is due to the direct access to a large range of people that enjoy horror related items. Because of
these reasons I would choose to market our film on Scream magazine.

6. FILM MAGAZINE RESEARCH
Entertainment-
A large amount of magazine covers made by Entertainment magazine show a iconic figure to the film in a close-up
or mid close-up often in the centre of the cover. The film magazine covers often have the title ‘Entertainment’ going
behind the characters head, with the title being bright and contrasting to the backdrop which is often quite dull.
Other text on the page is often the film title, this is done in the films own style so as to keep to film conventions.

The micro features that can be taken from this image are the
mise en scene and the camerawork. The mise en scene used
here is the lightsabre being clearly shown across the entire
page, this is because it is a well known prop associated with
Star Wars, by showing it there the audience instantly knows
the magazine is based on Star Wars. The character being
shown as well as the props are central, and the cover shows a
mid shot of this character. This allows for the entire prop and
character to be seen and recognised. The macro features
used are genre and narrative. The genre clearly being an
action sci-fi, which is shown through the use of a futuristic
weapon. The narrative shown here is that the last Jedi is
being trained, shown through the lightsabre and text. We can
also tell the character is good as traditionally the Jedi carry
blue lightsabres as opposed to the Siths red lightsabres.
This helps with my groups magazine planning as it shows
both micro and macro features that we should look into
before coming up with a final magazine cover idea.
7. Empire-
A large amount of magazine covers made by Empire magazine show a iconic figure or figures to the film in a long shot
or mid close-up often in the centre of the cover. The film magazine covers often have the title ‘Empire’ going behind
the characters head, with the title being bright and contrasting to the backdrop which is often quite dull. Other text
on the page is often the film title, this is done in the films own style so as to keep to film conventions.

LAYOUT DESIGN
Here using the research I found out on previous slides I have
created a rough draft of what our magazine cover could look like,
followed by a rough version created in Photoshop, this has been
done so as to make creating a final version with my group easier.
This will be the case because I will know how to both keep to the
magazine conventions and our film conventions.

that I created using Photoshop. It
takes the conventions of both our
film and the magazine and
combines them to create an
