Leah Ellis proposes creating a children's book of nursery rhymes for her graphic design project. She has experience with print projects, magazines, and drawing tablets from previous work. The concept is for a colorful, attention-grabbing book featuring a consistent main character. Leah will research typography, children's book design, and color theory. She will experiment with typography, color schemes, drawing techniques, and character design. Evaluation will include weekly reflections and a final evaluation to assess her work and opportunities for improvement.

Leah’s Little Lot of Rhymes

Main area of activity:
Graphic Design is my main area seems as I would like to create a book for children.
Rationale:
I have made quite a few print projects over the last 2 years. I have done different magazines and
such that have been teaching me about all the conventions around these areas. I have also done
my FMP last year which included a drawing tablet so I feel that I have had adequate practice with
that area. I will be working on typography a bit more, which I haven’t looked at too closely before
but I feel that will be some of my experiments. I will be taking inspiration from my past magazines
work as that had me work my text around the images and making sure that the images used were
appropriate. I also will be looking at how I did doodles around the magazine that I produced in my
AS media class to fill in some little spaces with relevant imagery that does not distract the reader
so much from the content.
Project Concept:
The concept for my project is for a children’s book of nursery rhymes, which will be very colourful
and bold to keep attention and keep them interested to read through the entire book. I plan on
using primary colours as my main base to keep it bright throughout, although when I do more
research into colours I may end up changing it to be more towards how my main character
dresses, which may end up being a light pink/purple theme for a magical fairy. I would like to make
it so that there is one main character is consistent through all the stories. I would like to conduct
more research into typography to be more educated on how I should present the wording so that it
is more attention grabbing and still relatively easy for the young children to understand. I would
also like to look into similar books and see what worked well or not in their work so that I can take
inspiration from them.
How will the project be evaluated and reviewed:
I will be conducting ongoing evaluation throughout my production through a production reflection to
be filled out weekly, giving me time to evaluate and change anything that I am not completely
happy with as I go along instead of having to wait to the end to discover that IU may not like a few
of the things that I am doing. Alongside this process I am also planning to complete one big
evaluation at the end of all my work, referencing the ongoing evaluation likely, of what I feel once
the project is completed so that I can look back at everything on a whole as well.
