Does your final product reflect your
original intentions?
• Compare your planning/digital flat plans/
storyboards to your final product
My final product does reflect my initial intentions. I initially planned to have 10 pages.
However my finished product features 12 pages as I feel the story requires that amount.
During planning I planned to have a cartoon, bright kid friendly feel to it. The research I
did featured similar cartoons that I wished to take inspiration from. I feel like my
finished product reflects this and I have stayed true to my initial plans and I have never
strayed away from these plans.
My planned story idea was the original three little pigs story. I added a new character
“Baby pig”. I did this to change the story up and make it my own. This was my plan all
along therefore my finished product reflects this.
My digital flat plans are the things I used most as a template for my final product. I used
them as a basis for my work. I did change the actual pictures however. As my intentions
when drawing the flat plans was to use them as a loose guide line. The comparisons of
the flat plans to the final product is great, as started previously the flat plans were only
used as a loose guide line.
When creating my story board I used Photoshop to create all of the assets used for the
final product.
As you can see from the slide above is an example of the many
comparisons between my original digital flat plan and my finished
product. You are able to see the development of my initial idea. The main
thing the two images have in common is the fact that the wolf is in top of
the house. The image taken from the original digital flat plan wasn’t very
detailed and was just used to give me a rough idea of what my desired
plan was overall.
The bottom image is far more detailed with the text from the book at the
bottom of the page describing what is taking part in this scene.
How well have you constructed your
images?
• How well have you constructed your images?
You could talk about the overall visual
appearance and well as the use of texture and
colour.
I feel like my images overall were constructed well. I feel like I have used texture and colour
to my advantage. I have been able to used the texture to make the environments and
characters more appealing to children. I have given the wolf fur. This makes the wolf stand
out and look more sinister. I have given the grass, sky and clouds texture. This helps the
bright colours of these environments look much more interesting. I feel like children of
young ages would like to look at pages with these images on it.
I used Photoshop to create everything featured on each page. Throughout the book as
previously mentioned bright colours and characters such as all four pigs, each building, the
grass, and the sky.
How well have you used text to anchor
your images
• You should talk about the combination of
words, images and text.
I feel like overall I have been able to use the text to bring out the best of my images.
That being said I feel like with more time I would be able to make this much better
as when I during production I the text was the last thing I placed on when creating
the images. If more time was available to me I feel like I’d have more time to think
about where to place specific pieces of text.
I feel like the placement of text in each image has been thought about and not just
placed randomly. On a few pages I have actually changed the colour of the text as
the usual black colour blended in too much and the text has to stand out as young
children has to be able to read it. I have tried to make the combination of words
and images that I have used throughout this production bold and bright. I feel like
the placement of the the text will be able to highlight the image and vice versa.
In the early stages of planning I had a rough idea of what I wanted on each page. I
used the script and digital flat plan to help me through the development process. A
good example of this would be the famous line “not by the hair in om chinny chin
chin”. This is an example of text that is used as speech.
Is your product suitable for your
audience?
• Reference your proposal
• Give an audience profile and describe
suitability in reference to content
Throughout production I was regularly referring back to my proposal. That being said I feel
like my finished product is suitable for my target audience. The audience I was targeting
and keeping in mind during production were children aged 3-10. I chose this age range
because I feel like my methods of illustration would appeal to children under the age of 10
but above the age of 3 as they may not be too interested in anything when they are
younger. As part of my proposal I stated that my plan was to create colorful characters and
environments. I feel like I have stayed true to this as during production I frequently
referred back to my proposal to keep my original plan in mind and never strayed away
from my original plans.
What do you like/dislike about the
techniques you have used?
• Reference specific tools you used with images
Shape warping - I liked using the warping tool because it
allowed me to change the characters by stretching them out
and make them more true to life by morphing them into
different angles, to get the size I wanted. I used the warp tool to
transform all fore if the pigs body's, the wolfs head, tail and
body.
Illustration- Illustration was the first method I used before
developing my book. I enjoyed this technique because it helped
to layout in my own mind the contents of the page and would
give mw a general idea of how it would be laid out. My images
were drawn in squares in a comic book styled format.
What do you like/dislike about how
your final product looks?
Overall I liked the page layout for my Children’s Book. I
mainly used the warping and polygonal lasso tool on
Photoshop to complete it. I have experience using both of
these tools and the software before so this wasn’t
challenging for me. I feel like overall my book looked
fascinating and endearing because I made sure to feature
bright coloured images.
I disliked how the “straw” house looked because I used
the clipping mask technique along with the photo filter
technique and I feel like it never came out looking like I
was hoping. Eventually I had to move on however as I
was spending too much time on it.
Why did you include the content you
used?
• Images, fonts, effects, colours
I used a basic blocky font. I used this because my target audience is younger children, so
I feel like a more readable font will help them learn what words look like and make it
easy for them to read it. I also used this font for the main text
What signs, symbols or codes have
your used in your work?
• Choices of colour, style, locations, character
design and tone all give additional meaning to
your work.
Audience Responses
Cultural competence:
Media texts require us to have a certain level of cultural understanding to
be able to interpret them.
At a basic level, this could mean being able to read the language that a
magazine is written in.
At a deeper level, it means being able to interpret signs and symbols that
we use a visual shorthand to communicate ideas.
We recognise these signs in our own culture but find it harder to
understand when looking at others.
We create and attach meaning to signs and symbols in many different
forms.
22Creative Media Production 2012
Audience Responses
Cultural competence:
What is this?
This is a Norwegian Pine tree, covered in
snow and with a red ribbon on.
Our cultural understanding allows us to
interpret its meaning.
To us, in British society, it means
Christmas, presents and family.
This is because we share a cultural
knowledge.
23Creative Media Production 2012
Audience Responses
Cultural competence:
There are many other signs and symbols
that we attach meaning to.
A leather jacket can imply rebellion.
A sports car can imply wealth and power.
A cross can represent religion.
24Creative Media Production 2012
Audience Responses
Cultural competence:
Visual representations of everyday objects are often the same the world
over. A car appears as a car, no matter what country it appears in.
What that car means however, can be very different depending on your
cultural background.
25Creative Media Production 2012
What representations can be found in
your work?
• How are men, women or children shown in
your work? Does your work feature different
ages, races, social groups or religions? Does a
lack of any variety of character types create its
own representation?
What style have you employed in your
products?
• Discuss influences/ existing products
• What visual style does your work have and
why did you choose it?
What were the strengths and weaknesses
of the pre-production and planning
• How did the planning and research help
• How well did you manage your time
• Reference specific examples
I think the main strength of my mood board is the overall mood and feel of the book that I achieved. I was
able to give the book my own spin with out straying too far away frim the original story. Using the device
of reflection worked well to show the transformation scene and I personally liked my choice of colours to
enhance the mood. The issues I ran into early on was the fact that in the original story the Wolfe falls
down the chimney and gets burned alive. This isn't very appropriate for children to be reading in this day
and age. So I changed the story so it has morals and teaches the children reading to be helpful. Because in
my version the three pigs nurse the Wolfe back to help and take his advice so they end up opening up a
hospital. I also added a 4th pig “baby pig” this character doesn't do much or say anything. I added this
character to add a sense of urgency and to really drive hope the fact that they are all a family. I also feel
like the children reading will be able to empathise with the baby pig more than any of the other pigs
because often children rely on their elders look after them . to
I did not stick to my production schedule as I thought I would. This was because some parts took longer
than expected. I had to take out a page or two and even redo a few environments multiple times.
Historical and cultural context
• How does your work compare to what has
come before? What other similar products
have existed in the past? What current
products exist?

Digital graphics evaluation pro forma

  • 2. Use this template to help you evaluate your project. You should give specific details about your work. You should provide both written and visual examples to explain your project. You should find areas to praise in your work. Be specific about why you think they are good or why you are proud of them. You should also find areas that could be improved. Look for areas that you could make better if you went back to them. Be specific about what you would improve. Add additional slides as you need to. Don’t be restricted by what is here. Any blank slides should be deleted before submission.
  • 3. Does your final product reflect your original intentions? • Compare your planning/digital flat plans/ storyboards to your final product
  • 4. My final product does reflect my initial intentions. I initially planned to have 10 pages. However my finished product features 12 pages as I feel the story requires that amount. During planning I planned to have a cartoon, bright kid friendly feel to it. The research I did featured similar cartoons that I wished to take inspiration from. I feel like my finished product reflects this and I have stayed true to my initial plans and I have never strayed away from these plans. My planned story idea was the original three little pigs story. I added a new character “Baby pig”. I did this to change the story up and make it my own. This was my plan all along therefore my finished product reflects this. My digital flat plans are the things I used most as a template for my final product. I used them as a basis for my work. I did change the actual pictures however. As my intentions when drawing the flat plans was to use them as a loose guide line. The comparisons of the flat plans to the final product is great, as started previously the flat plans were only used as a loose guide line. When creating my story board I used Photoshop to create all of the assets used for the final product.

  • 6. As you can see from the slide above is an example of the many comparisons between my original digital flat plan and my finished product. You are able to see the development of my initial idea. The main thing the two images have in common is the fact that the wolf is in top of the house. The image taken from the original digital flat plan wasn’t very detailed and was just used to give me a rough idea of what my desired plan was overall. The bottom image is far more detailed with the text from the book at the bottom of the page describing what is taking part in this scene.
  • 7. How well have you constructed your images? • How well have you constructed your images? You could talk about the overall visual appearance and well as the use of texture and colour.
  • 8. I feel like my images overall were constructed well. I feel like I have used texture and colour to my advantage. I have been able to used the texture to make the environments and characters more appealing to children. I have given the wolf fur. This makes the wolf stand out and look more sinister. I have given the grass, sky and clouds texture. This helps the bright colours of these environments look much more interesting. I feel like children of young ages would like to look at pages with these images on it. I used Photoshop to create everything featured on each page. Throughout the book as previously mentioned bright colours and characters such as all four pigs, each building, the grass, and the sky.
  • 9. How well have you used text to anchor your images • You should talk about the combination of words, images and text.
  • 10. I feel like overall I have been able to use the text to bring out the best of my images. That being said I feel like with more time I would be able to make this much better as when I during production I the text was the last thing I placed on when creating the images. If more time was available to me I feel like I’d have more time to think about where to place specific pieces of text. I feel like the placement of text in each image has been thought about and not just placed randomly. On a few pages I have actually changed the colour of the text as the usual black colour blended in too much and the text has to stand out as young children has to be able to read it. I have tried to make the combination of words and images that I have used throughout this production bold and bright. I feel like the placement of the the text will be able to highlight the image and vice versa. In the early stages of planning I had a rough idea of what I wanted on each page. I used the script and digital flat plan to help me through the development process. A good example of this would be the famous line “not by the hair in om chinny chin chin”. This is an example of text that is used as speech.

  • 12. Is your product suitable for your audience? • Reference your proposal • Give an audience profile and describe suitability in reference to content
  • 13. Throughout production I was regularly referring back to my proposal. That being said I feel like my finished product is suitable for my target audience. The audience I was targeting and keeping in mind during production were children aged 3-10. I chose this age range because I feel like my methods of illustration would appeal to children under the age of 10 but above the age of 3 as they may not be too interested in anything when they are younger. As part of my proposal I stated that my plan was to create colorful characters and environments. I feel like I have stayed true to this as during production I frequently referred back to my proposal to keep my original plan in mind and never strayed away from my original plans.
  • 14. What do you like/dislike about the techniques you have used? • Reference specific tools you used with images
  • 15. Shape warping - I liked using the warping tool because it allowed me to change the characters by stretching them out and make them more true to life by morphing them into different angles, to get the size I wanted. I used the warp tool to transform all fore if the pigs body's, the wolfs head, tail and body.
  • 16. Illustration- Illustration was the first method I used before developing my book. I enjoyed this technique because it helped to layout in my own mind the contents of the page and would give mw a general idea of how it would be laid out. My images were drawn in squares in a comic book styled format.
  • 17. What do you like/dislike about how your final product looks? Overall I liked the page layout for my Children’s Book. I mainly used the warping and polygonal lasso tool on Photoshop to complete it. I have experience using both of these tools and the software before so this wasn’t challenging for me. I feel like overall my book looked fascinating and endearing because I made sure to feature bright coloured images. I disliked how the “straw” house looked because I used the clipping mask technique along with the photo filter technique and I feel like it never came out looking like I was hoping. Eventually I had to move on however as I was spending too much time on it.
  • 18.
  • 19. Why did you include the content you used? • Images, fonts, effects, colours
  • 20. I used a basic blocky font. I used this because my target audience is younger children, so I feel like a more readable font will help them learn what words look like and make it easy for them to read it. I also used this font for the main text
  • 21. What signs, symbols or codes have your used in your work? • Choices of colour, style, locations, character design and tone all give additional meaning to your work.
  • 22. Audience Responses Cultural competence: Media texts require us to have a certain level of cultural understanding to be able to interpret them. At a basic level, this could mean being able to read the language that a magazine is written in. At a deeper level, it means being able to interpret signs and symbols that we use a visual shorthand to communicate ideas. We recognise these signs in our own culture but find it harder to understand when looking at others. We create and attach meaning to signs and symbols in many different forms. 22Creative Media Production 2012
  • 23. Audience Responses Cultural competence: What is this? This is a Norwegian Pine tree, covered in snow and with a red ribbon on. Our cultural understanding allows us to interpret its meaning. To us, in British society, it means Christmas, presents and family. This is because we share a cultural knowledge. 23Creative Media Production 2012
  • 24. Audience Responses Cultural competence: There are many other signs and symbols that we attach meaning to. A leather jacket can imply rebellion. A sports car can imply wealth and power. A cross can represent religion. 24Creative Media Production 2012
  • 25. Audience Responses Cultural competence: Visual representations of everyday objects are often the same the world over. A car appears as a car, no matter what country it appears in. What that car means however, can be very different depending on your cultural background. 25Creative Media Production 2012
  • 26. What representations can be found in your work? • How are men, women or children shown in your work? Does your work feature different ages, races, social groups or religions? Does a lack of any variety of character types create its own representation?
  • 27.
  • 28. What style have you employed in your products? • Discuss influences/ existing products • What visual style does your work have and why did you choose it?
  • 29.
  • 30. What were the strengths and weaknesses of the pre-production and planning • How did the planning and research help • How well did you manage your time • Reference specific examples
  • 31. I think the main strength of my mood board is the overall mood and feel of the book that I achieved. I was able to give the book my own spin with out straying too far away frim the original story. Using the device of reflection worked well to show the transformation scene and I personally liked my choice of colours to enhance the mood. The issues I ran into early on was the fact that in the original story the Wolfe falls down the chimney and gets burned alive. This isn't very appropriate for children to be reading in this day and age. So I changed the story so it has morals and teaches the children reading to be helpful. Because in my version the three pigs nurse the Wolfe back to help and take his advice so they end up opening up a hospital. I also added a 4th pig “baby pig” this character doesn't do much or say anything. I added this character to add a sense of urgency and to really drive hope the fact that they are all a family. I also feel like the children reading will be able to empathise with the baby pig more than any of the other pigs because often children rely on their elders look after them . to I did not stick to my production schedule as I thought I would. This was because some parts took longer than expected. I had to take out a page or two and even redo a few environments multiple times.
  • 32. Historical and cultural context • How does your work compare to what has come before? What other similar products have existed in the past? What current products exist?
  • 33.
  • 34. Peer Feedback • Summarise peer feedback and discuss – Responses you agree with – Responses you disagree with
