b. What are the considerations when using cost data? (12 marks)
c. What are the three (3) common mistakes make in estimating and how to prevent the mistakes?

You are working in a Quantity Surveying consultant firm. Your firm has recently engaged by a newly
established developer.
You are working for a house builder at Kuala Lumpur. Your company has recently received an invitation to
tender a low cost apartment in Kajang, Selangor. You are required to make a recommendation whether to
accept or decline the tender invitation. What are the 5 main factors you will consider before making the
recommendation? Explain how these factors influence your decision.
What are the four (4) main factors influencing the estimate of a material cost? Explain and provide an
example of how each factors influence the estimate of the material cost.
Steven is a trainee in a Quantity Surveying company. He is currently doing a preliminary estimate for a 3 stars
hotel in Subang Jaya which is anticipated to start constructing in July 2013. He is planning to estimate the
project using cost data. Advise him on the following matters:

Provide your recommendation and justification. (9 marks)
c. The advantages and disadvantages of nominated sub-contractor. (8 marks)
Question 7:
Compare the pricing factors when estimating the following trade of the elements:
 Concrete work for pad footing and column. (25 marks)
Select the appropriate method/s of estimating that you will apply for the task and justify your
selection.
You are working in a quantity surveying consultant firm. Your firm is currently engage as the quantity
surveying consultant for a proposed high-end clubhouse project. The clubhouse is targeted to be an award
winning project. The project has a tight timeline for completion in order to qualify for 2013 award. The
project is still at pre-tender stage. You will be attending a client consultant meeting to discuss the matters on
subcontracting. Therefore, you are required to prepare the following information:
You are currently working as a trainee at Taylor’s QS Consultant. You are required to provide an estimate for
a medium cost housing development in Petaling Jaya based on a set of preliminary sketch drawings. You are
given a day to complete the task.
