2. COMMON INDIAN VARIETIES
1. Morus alba:
* It grows to a height of 15mts.
* Commonly cultivated in Punjab and Himalayas for timber and
fruits.
2.Morus indica:
* Found in Kashmir, Sikkim, Himalayas, Bengal, Assam, Karnataka
and Tamil Nadu.
* Mainly it is grown as bushes.
* Some of the other cultivated forms mostly belonging to Morus
indica are
1.Assamabola, 2.Mysore local, 3. Dhar local, 4.Berhampore local, 5.
Kanva-2, 6.Sujanpur-1, 7.Sujanpur-2, 8.Sujanpur-3, 9. Sujanpur-4,10.
Sujanpur-5.
3. 3. Morus serrata:
Commonly grown as tree in Himalaya.
4.Morus laevigata:
In wild and cultivated conditions, it is found in Indus vally to Assam.
5.Mysore local:
• It is commonly called as Natikaddi.
• It is cultivated in traditional sericultural tracts of Karnataka.
• It is a low yielding variety.
• Leaf yield is around 8000kg/ha/year in rainfed conditions and
25000kg/ha/year in irrigated conditions.
6.Kanva-2 or M5
• It is an hybrid of Mysore local variety.
• Leaf yield is about 25000-30000kg/ha/year
• Didn’t grow in rainfed areas.
4. 7. MR2(Mildew Resistant Variety-2)
* The TN Sericulture Dept, Coonoor in 1970 developed this
variety.
* It is resistant to powdery mildew disease.
*This variety is very popular in the plains od TN.
*Leaf yield is about 25000-30000kg/ha/year.
* It is susceptible to thrips (minute insects) attack.
5. HIGH YIELDING VARIETIES
1.S30:
* Evolved atCSTRI (Central Sericultural Research and Training Institute,Mysore)
Buhes open type
Branches simple and vertical
Leaves pale green, unlobed, ovate, smooth and succulent.
Leaf yield of around 35000kg/ha/year can be obtained under irrigated
conditions.
2.S36:
• Evolved ar CSRTI.
• Bushes open type
• Leaves pale green, unlobes,ovate,smooth and coriaceous.
• Leaf yield is about 40-42000kg/ha/year.
• Due to its better leaf succulency for the chawki rearing.
6. 3.S54:
*Bushes open spreading type.
*Leaves simple and unlobed.
*Nearly 46000kg leaf/ha/year can be obtained.
*Evolved at CSRTI
4.VISWA:
*This was evolved at KSSRDI (Karnataka State Sericulture Research
and Development Institute).
*Grows errect
*Leaves unlobed, large and green.
*Good sproutig and rooting and shows fast growth.
*This variety has a potential to produce 40-
45000leaf/ha/year.
*Leaf moisture is around 74%.
7. 5. V 1(Victory-1):
*Evolved at CSTRI.
*Errect and fast growing variety
*Leaves unlobed,dark green, succulent with very high
moisture content (78%)
*It shows high rooting and good sprouting character.
*Leaf yield potential is more than 60000kg/ha/year.
*Since this variety produces large biomass, wide spacing is
recommended.
*The leaf remains fresh for longer time in the bed.
*It is the most desired variety today.
*The cuttings are sold out at very high price.
8. VARIETIES FOR RAINFED CONDITION
Southern states of India are under rainfed conditions.
The CSRTI Mysore has developed the following varieties
for rainfed conditions
1.S3:
*It is a suitable variety for red soil conditions.
*This is a fast growing variety with straight branches.
*Leaves unlobed.
*Moisture content is high (76%)
*Leaf yield is about 18tonnes/ha/year under red soil
conditions.
9. 2. S34:
* Recommended for the black cotton soils.
*This variety has deep and extensive root system.
*Grow well under moisture strss conditions
*Leaf yield is about 17tonnes/ha/year.
3.RFS 135 and RFS 175:
*Found under rainfed conditions.
*Give good results in irrigated conditions.
