Cowpea is an annual herbaceous legume crop that is well adapted to dry environments. Its botanical name is Vigna unguiculata and it is native to Central Africa or India. India is a major producer of cowpeas, growing them for their green pods, grains, and fodder. Cowpeas are used for human and animal nutrition, as a green manure crop, and for erosion control.
