Sericulture industry mainly depends upon leaf variety for its success as mulberry
leaves are main source of nutrition for silkworm. Hence in these slides we aimed
to study different mulberry cultivation which ultimately reflect the economic
traits. Mulberry is a fast growing, deep rooted dioecious plant that grows under
varied climatic conditions.

KALPA VRUKSHA
Mysore local: It is a low yielding popular
for its adaptability to low inputs and poor
management conditions both under rainfed
and irrigated conditions. This mulberry
cultivar is also called as Natikaddi grown in
tradition areas of Karnataka, Andhra and
Telangana states. Branches are simple,
greenish with lobed or unlobed leaves,
occuring in the same plant, alternately or
spirally arranged, ovate to broadly ovate,
palmately veined and coriaceous. The leaf
yield is 8000 to 25000 kg/ ha/ year with
leaves which are very thin and smooth.

Kanva 2 or Mysore 5 or M5 variety
•It is a open pollinated hybrid selection made at
the government Kanva silk farm near
Channapatnam in Karnataka 1950.
•It grows vigorously and response well in
agronomic practices both under rainfed and
irrigated conditions.
•It is superior to local. Branching simple, erect,
greenish to grayish under rain fed system it
gives an average yield of 12000 kg/ha/year
with 100:50:50 and 10 tones FYM/ ha/ year.
While under irrigated condition it yields 35000
kg/ ha/ year with a spot dosage of 300:120:120
kg NPK and 20 tones of organic manure at per
hectare/year.

Victory V1
•During 1997, a new variety was evolved by
CSRTI which was suitable for MV and BV
silkworms with an average yield of 67000 kgs/
ha/ year.
•It is a diploid mulberry variety obtained from the
cross between S30 X C776 in F1 generation evolved
by CSRTI.
•The leaves are broad, thick, glossy, smooth,
succulent, oval, dark green, entire with a
thickness of 135 – 140 µm with erect branches.
•It is moderately tolerant to leaf blight and leaf
spot.
Moisture retension capacity after 6 hrs of
harvesting is 80% slightly more than that of G4.

Anantha variety
• Anantha variety is diploid and a
clonal selection from BFS – 135 by
regional sericulture Research station
Ananthapur.
• The leaves are large, unlobed, thick,
green, entire and with average leaf
yield of 25000 to 77000 kgs/ ha/ year
under irrigated conditions and 10000
– 12000 kgs/ ha/ year under rain fed
conditions.
• It is resistant to pests like jassids,
mites, trips, etc.

S13 mulberry variety
•It is a selection from open pollinated
hybrid at the CSR & TI Mysore, from
seedling population of K2.
•Large number of branches with a short
internodes bearing leaves which are
greenish, simple, thick with smooth
surface.
•It yields nearly 10-12 tons /ha /year
under rainfed conditions.
Moderately resistant to leaf rust and tutra
disease but resistant capacity is high
against powdery meldew.

• It is a diploid obtained by selection
from progeny of S30 X Ber776 with an
average yield of
15 tons /ha /year.
• Moderately resistant to leaf spot and
highly susceptible to tukra infestation.
• Branches vertical and greenish to grey.
Boat shaped leaves, simple. ovate, dark
green and coriaceous.
•The leaf yield is around 15000 kgs/
hectare per year.

AGB8
•It is a mulberry variety developed by CSRTI,
Mysore which is suitable for irrigated
conditions.
•Leaf is unlobed, boat shaped, light green to
dark green in colour with good rooting
capacity.
It is a hybrid of (Sujanpurs X Philippines) and
(Kanva2 X Black berry) and moderately
resistant to foliar diseases.

Vishala variety
• Vishala is a triploid clonal selection
obtained from farmers in KSSRDI thala
ghattapur.
• It is a fast growing variety with early
maturing leaves.
• Leaves are unlobed, broad, ovate or cordate
with dentate margin, slightly rough, dark
green in colour.
• The average yield ranges from 26000
kgs/ha/ year under irrigated conditions
while it gives 12000 kgs/ ha/ year in
Karnataka and gives 30000 kgs/ ha/ year
under same conditions in West Bengal.

BER Mulberry variety
•The variety is obtained from cross between Phillippines X Vietnam 2 giving an average
yield of 57 MT/ ha/ year with 8 – 11 shoots per plant.
•The total shoot length and leaf six is 755 cm and 416.5 cm respectively with a thickness of
130 – 145 µm.
•100 leaves weighing about 545 gm on an average.
It is moderately resistant to foliar diseases. It shows a superiority in leaf size and plant height.

S – 1635
•It is a popular mulberry variety from Eastern
and North Eastern India for both irrigated and
rainfed conditions.
•It is an open pollinated hybrid from CSRIT.
•It is large, thick, dark green with high moisture
content (78 – 79%).
The average leaf yield ranges from 42000 kgs to
45000 kgs/ ha/ year with good rooting ability.

Alkaline Variety
• A R12 is evolved from cross pollinated
hybrids of S – 41 X Ber C776. It is fast
growing
mulberry of medium height, branches
spreaded with short internodes with good
rooting
capacity and grows well in alkaline soils.
• Leaves are unlobed, large, cordate, dark
gree with rough surface with recommended
package
of practices its potentiality is 25 MT/ ha/
year.

G 2 Mulberry variety
G2 was developed during 2003. It is a
selection from control pollinated hybrid
of M. multicaules and S34. Its leaves are
large, entire, cordate in shepe with
smooth, glossy and slightly wavy margin
is best suited for chawki silkworms.

G4 Mulberry variety
•It is best plantation choice of sericulturist for late
– age silkworms developed during 2003 from a
cross pollination between M. multicavites and S13
and is very popular in South India. The variety is
characterized by open type bushes, fast growing.
•The leaf shape and surface is cordate with
smooth surface, glossy, wavy with thickness of
155 – 160 µm. moisture retention capacity is 78.6
%, it exhibits increased levels of shoot and root
biomass.
It grows fast when compared to other high
yielding varieties. It is moderately resistant to leaf
spot, leaf rust and root rot diseases.

  • 2. Sericulture industry mainly depends upon leaf variety for its success as mulberry leaves are main source of nutrition for silkworm. Hence in these slides we aimed to study different mulberry cultivation which ultimately reflect the economic traits. Sai Abhishek KALPA VRUKSHA Mysore local: It is a low yielding popular for its adaptability to low inputs and poor management conditions both under rainfed and irrigated conditions. This mulberry cultivar is also called as Natikaddi grown in tradition areas of Karnataka, Andhra and Telangana states. Branches are simple, greenish with lobed or unlobed leaves, occuring in the same plant, alternately or spirally arranged, ovate to broadly ovate, palmately veined and coriaceous. The leaf yield is 8000 to 25000 kg/ ha/ year with leaves which are very thin and smooth.

Sai Abhishek Kanva 2 or Mysore 5 or M5 variety •It is a open pollinated hybrid selection made at the government Kanva silk farm near Channapatnam in Karnataka 1950. •It grows vigorously and response well in agronomic practices both under rainfed and irrigated conditions. •It is superior to local. Branching simple, erect, greenish to grayish under rain fed system it gives an average yield of 12000 kg/ha/year with 100:50:50 and 10 tones FYM/ ha/ year. While under irrigated condition it yields 35000 kg/ ha/ year with a spot dosage of 300:120:120 kg NPK and 20 tones of organic manure at per hectare/year.

Sai Abhishek Victory V1 •During 1997, a new variety was evolved by CSRTI which was suitable for MV and BV silkworms with an average yield of 67000 kgs/ ha/ year. •It is a diploid mulberry variety obtained from the cross between S30 X C776 in F1 generation evolved by CSRTI. •The leaves are broad, thick, glossy, smooth, succulent, oval, dark green, entire with a thickness of 135 – 140 µm with erect branches. •It is moderately tolerant to leaf blight and leaf spot. Moisture retension capacity after 6 hrs of harvesting is 80% slightly more than that of G4.

Sai Abhishek Anantha variety • Anantha variety is diploid and a clonal selection from BFS – 135 by regional sericulture Research station Ananthapur. • The leaves are large, unlobed, thick, green, entire and with average leaf yield of 25000 to 77000 kgs/ ha/ year under irrigated conditions and 10000 – 12000 kgs/ ha/ year under rain fed conditions. • It is resistant to pests like jassids, mites, trips, etc.

Sai Abhishek S13 mulberry variety •It is a selection from open pollinated hybrid at the CSR & TI Mysore, from seedling population of K2. •Large number of branches with a short internodes bearing leaves which are greenish, simple, thick with smooth surface. •It yields nearly 10-12 tons /ha /year under rainfed conditions. Moderately resistant to leaf rust and tutra disease but resistant capacity is high against powdery meldew.

Sai Abhishek S34 • It is a diploid obtained by selection from progeny of S30 X Ber776 with an average yield of 15 tons /ha /year. • Moderately resistant to leaf spot and highly susceptible to tukra infestation. • Branches vertical and greenish to grey. Boat shaped leaves, simple. ovate, dark green and coriaceous. •The leaf yield is around 15000 kgs/ hectare per year.
  • 9. 8/2/2023 9 Kuntamalla Sujatha, G. Prashanthi & M. Sai Abhishek AGB8 •It is a mulberry variety developed by CSRTI, Mysore which is suitable for irrigated conditions. •Leaf is unlobed, boat shaped, light green to dark green in colour with good rooting capacity. It is a hybrid of (Sujanpurs X Philippines) and (Kanva2 X Black berry) and moderately resistant to foliar diseases.

Sai Abhishek Vishala variety • Vishala is a triploid clonal selection obtained from farmers in KSSRDI thala ghattapur. • It is a fast growing variety with early maturing leaves. • Leaves are unlobed, broad, ovate or cordate with dentate margin, slightly rough, dark green in colour. • The average yield ranges from 26000 kgs/ha/ year under irrigated conditions while it gives 12000 kgs/ ha/ year in Karnataka and gives 30000 kgs/ ha/ year under same conditions in West Bengal.

Sai Abhishek BER Mulberry variety •The variety is obtained from cross between Phillippines X Vietnam 2 giving an average yield of 57 MT/ ha/ year with 8 – 11 shoots per plant. •The total shoot length and leaf six is 755 cm and 416.5 cm respectively with a thickness of 130 – 145 µm. •100 leaves weighing about 545 gm on an average. It is moderately resistant to foliar diseases. It shows a superiority in leaf size and plant height.

Sai Abhishek S – 1635 •It is a popular mulberry variety from Eastern and North Eastern India for both irrigated and rainfed conditions. •It is an open pollinated hybrid from CSRIT. •It is large, thick, dark green with high moisture content (78 – 79%). The average leaf yield ranges from 42000 kgs to 45000 kgs/ ha/ year with good rooting ability.
  • 13. 8/2/2023 13 Kuntamalla Sujatha, G. Prashanthi & M. Sai Abhishek Alkaline Variety • A R12 is evolved from cross pollinated hybrids of S – 41 X Ber C776. It is fast growing mulberry of medium height, branches spreaded with short internodes with good rooting capacity and grows well in alkaline soils. • Leaves are unlobed, large, cordate, dark gree with rough surface with recommended package of practices its potentiality is 25 MT/ ha/ year.
