This document discusses sericulture and silkworm identification. It begins by defining sericulture and moriculture. It then describes the five major types of silkworms used for commercial silk production - mulberry, tasar, oak tasar, eri, and muga. Each type of silkworm is discussed in 1-2 paragraphs, including what they feed on and where they are produced. The stages of silk production from egg to cocoon harvesting are summarized. Global silk production percentages by country are listed. Finally, it outlines some opportunities in sericulture like employment, profits, technology, and demand.
The rearing of silkworms for the production of silk
is called sericulture.
India is the second largest silk producing country in
the world next to China.
Silk is the secretion from the salivary glands which
are found on both sides of the alimentary canal of
silkworm larvae and this secretion hardens into
fine threads called silk.

A Chinese tale of the discovery of the silkworm’s silk was by an ancient empress Lei Zu , the wife of the emperor.
She was drinking tea under tree, when a silk cocoon fell into her tea cup and the hot tea loosened the long strand of silk
As she it out, and started to wrap the silk thread around her flinger, she felt the warm sensation
When silk ran out, an larva appeared. She realized that it was this larva that produces the silk
Soon, she taught this to people and it became wide spread

Silk is a natural protein fiber , some forms of which can be woven into textiles. The protein fiber of silk is composed mainly of fibroin and is produced by certain insect larvae to form cocoons. The best-known silk is obtained from the cocoons of the larvae of the mulberry silkworm reared in captivity (sericulture). The shimmering appearance of silk is due to the triangular prism-like structure of the silk fibre, which allows silk cloth to refract incoming light at different angles, thus producing different colours.
Pest risk analysis (PRA) is “the process of evaluating biological or other scientific and economic evidence to determine whether an organism is a pest, whether it should be regulated, and the strength of any phytosanitary measures to be taken against it” (IPPC, 2012).
A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.
The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.

Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.
2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

5. Sericulture – stages of production.
6. Global production of silk - % share.
7. Sericulture – opportunities.
3. What is sericulture?
Sericulture, or silk farming, is the rearing of
silkworms for the production of raw silk.
Sericulture is both an art and science of raising
silkworms for silk production.
Amongst species of silkworms, Bombix mori is the
most widely used.
Silk is known as the queen of textile and
“BIOSTEEL” because of its strength.
4. What is moriculture?
Moriculture is the science of mulberry cultivation to
rear silk worm for silk production.
Bombyx mori feed specifically on white
mulberry leaves, but also eat Osage oranges and
lettuce.
5. Different types of silk worms
There are five major types of silk of commercial importance,
obtained from different species of silkworms which in turn
feed on a number of food plants: Except mulberry, other
varieties of silks are generally termed as nonmulberry silks.
India has the unique distinction of producing all these
commercial varieties of silk.
SILK WORM TYPES ARE:-
1. Mulberry silk worm.
2. Tasar silk worm.
3. Oak Tasar silk worm.
4. Eri silk worm.
5. Muga silk worm.
6. Mulberry silk worm.
The bulk of the commercial silk
produced in the world comes from this
variety and often silk generally refers to
mulberry silk.
Mulberry silk comes from the silkworm,
Bombyx mori L. which solely feeds on
the leaves of mulberry plant.
In India, the major mulberry silk
producing states are Karnataka,
Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal, Tamil
Nadu and Jammu & Kashmir which
together accounts for 92 % of country's
total mulberry raw silk production.
7. Tasar silk worm.
Tasar silk is generated by the
silkworm, Antheraea mylitta which
mainly thrive on the food plants Asan
and Arjun.
It is less lustrous than mulberry silk,
but has its own feel and appeal.
tasar silk is mainly produced in the
states of Jharkhand, Chattisgarh
and Orissa, besides Maharashtra,
West Bengal and Andhra Pradesh.
Tasar culture is the main stay for
many a tribal community in India.
.
8. Oak Tasar silk worm.
It is a finer variety of tasar
generated by the silkworm,
Antheraea proyeli J.
in India they feed on natural food
plants of oak, found in abundance
in the sub Himalayan belt of India,
covering the states of Manipur,
Himachal Pradesh, Uttar
Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya and
Jammu & Kashmir.
China is the major producer of oak
tasar in the world and this comes
from another silkworm which is
known as Antheraea pernyi.
9. Eri silkworm.
Also known as Endi or Errandi.
Eri silk is the product of the
domesticated silkworm, Philosamia
ricini that feeds mainly on castor leaves.
Ericulture is a household activity
practiced mainly for protein rich pupae, a
delicacy for the tribal.
The silk is used indigenously for
preparation of chaddars (wraps) for own
use by these tribals.
In India, this culture is practiced mainly
in the north-eastern states and
Assam. It is also found in Bihar, West
Bengal and Orissa.
10. Muga silkworm.
Muga obtained from semi
domesticated multivoltine silkworm,
Antheraea assamensis.
This golden yellow colour silk is
prerogative of India and the pride of
Assam state.
Muga culture is specific to the state of
Assam and an integral part of the
tradition and culture of that state.
The muga silk, an high value product is
used in products like sarees,
mekhalas, chaddars, etc.
11. Sericulture-Stages of production.
The silk moth lays eggs.
The eggs hatch, and the larvae feeds on mulberry leaves.
When the silkworms are about 25 days old, they are 10,000
times heavier then when they hatched. They are now ready to
spin a silk cocoon.
The silk is produced in two glands in the silkworm’s head and
then forced out in liquid form through openings called
spinnerets.
The silk solidified when it comes in contact with the air.
The silkworm spin approximately 1 mile of filament and
completely encloses itself in a cocoon in about two or three days.
Due to quality restrictions, the amount of usable silk in each
cocoon is small. As a result ,5500 silkworms are required to
produce 1 kg of silk.
The silk is obtained from the undamaged cocoon by brushing
the cocoon to find the outside end of the filament.
The silk filament are then wound on a reel.
13. identification of Bombix mori
The domestic silkworm undergoes Complete
metamorphosis (Holometabola) and passes through
four morphological stages i.e. egg, larva, pupa and
adult.
Eggs:-
The silkworm eggs are tiny and weight around 2000
eggs to a gram. It measures 1-1.3 mm in length and
0.9 – 1.2 mm in width.
The size, weight, shape, colour of the egg, number of
eggs per laying vary among the different races and
according to the season.
14. Identification:-
Larval:-
The newly hatched larva is black or dark brown in
colour measuring about 3 mm in length. It is
commonly called as ANT or KEGO.
The head is large and the body is densely covered with
bristles.
the larva grows by passing moults to enter into later
instars the body becomes smooth and light in colour
due to rapid stretching of cuticular skin.
The body has 3 divisions i.e., head, thorax, abdomen.
15. Continued:-
Pupa:-
The pupal stage is generally called the resting, inactive
stage of the silkworm when it is incapable of feeding
and appears motionless. This is a misnomer.
The pupal stage is a transitional phase during which
definite changes take place. During this period of
biological activity the larval body and its internal organs
undergo a complete change (Metamorphosis) and assume
the new form of the adult moth.
Soon after pupation the pupa is white in colour and soft,
but gradually turns brown to dark brown and the pupa skin
harden.
16. Continued:-
Adult:-
The adult moth emerging from the pupa is incapable to fly.
It does not feed during its short adult life.
The adult body surface is covered with scales.
The compound eyes are situated on the either side of the
head. The ocelli are absent.
The antennae are conspicuous, large and bi-pectinate.
The thorax consists of three segments namely pro, meso
and meta thorax.
There are three pairs of thoracic legs, one pair on each of
the three thoracic segments.
17. continued
Abdomen:-
In the male adult eight abdominal segments are
visible, in the female seven segments. There are six
pairs of spiracles present laterally on either side of the
body.
19. Sericulture- opportunities.
Sericulture being cottage industry plays an important
roles in employment generation and poverty
alleviation.
It is one of the most profitable activity in rural sector.
Availability of indigenous technology at low cost.
Regular and quick returns.
Large demand and popularity of hand woven silk in
the west.
Scope for establishing the large production units and
organized sector.
This silk is woven into cloth and sarees. India is the
largest consumer of silk in the world.
