3. Research
I found that the research I conduct was very successful. The existing products that I research were
extremely helpful to view and take inspiration from as it allowed me to draft my ideas and
concepts all in the same place rather than just taking from different pieces separately. My
product research was the most successful part of my research especially when deciding on the
practical and production aspects of my film. This goes the same for my techniques research. I
really enjoyed finding different production techniques that I could potentially include in my
production especially since I attempted to specialise in visual effects. The techniques I found most
useful were the ones that used the mask tool on Premiere pro as this proved to be a pivotal part
of some of the scenes in my production. Overall this type of research really impacted my final
piece as without the skills and knowledge I had gained from this research, I would have not been
able to create the same effects that I had included in my piece.
As with previous audience research I have conducted, my primary research is usually not as
useful as my secondary research as when conduction a questionnaire the sample group that I use
is not large enough to give conclusive evidence to any of the findings. In future I plan to devise a
more successful primary research plan that will help me find more precise results. I could do this
by widening my sample group to a larger number of subjects or doing more research into
successful research techniques. I could also try different methods such as interviews and surveys
which may also be more successful.
In conclusion, my research was very successful as it impacted on my final product in a major way.
When conduction research on existing products and techniques in the future, I will use this
research as a template for how to locate, analyse and present different techniques of research.
4. Planning
Planning in this project, I found, to be very successful however a lot of what I had
planned did not end up making it into my final product. This was due to my piece
changing halfway through making a lot of the planning redundant. However I still
feel that my planning was very good for the original idea. Aspects as my planning
such as my call sheet, contingency plan and health and safety forms which I
believe were all conducted to my best ability. I am impressed with my level of
professionalism when conducting documents such as these as I found these more
useful to my current project more than I have in previous ones. I believe this is
due to the freedom I was given with this project as I had no criteria to hit.
My planning did impact my final project as a whole in a negative way. The story
that I had created for my product was not fleshed out enough to form a successful
narrative around. This in turn made for a lot of improvisation during production
which was not successful unlike previous times. I have taken this failure as an
opportunity to learn from as I know realise the true important of the planning
stages. Looking forward, I will create an extensive plan for the my next projects
which will cover all areas both production and more admin based tasks.
5. Time Management
Time management is an aspect of projects which previously I have had room
for improvement on. This project I feel as though my time management has
improved drastically by hitting specific deadlines that were set by myself and
by the course. During the beginning and middle of the course, my time
management was very good as I had completed all my planning and pre-
production documents quickly and to a good standard. This I was very pleased
with as I knew that I had learned and improved my skills in this area. My time
management then fell apart when I had to change my idea as I then had to
begin improvising and creating a new plan. If it wasn’t for the speedbump in
the middle then I believe I would have had perfect time keeping and would
have completed the project faster and more efficiently.
My time management fell down due to my planning stage not being as good
as it should have been. Although this is the case, I am still happy with the
improvement of my time management skills and will continue to show case
these skills in future projects
6. Technical Qualities
Comparisons between my product and a similar one (American Horror Story) are the themes that are used in the introductions. Although
the latter always has visually darker scenes, both products use a mystery and the theme of the unnatural to shock the audience. AHS’ intros
feature animals that have been stitched together and bloody scenes whilst Don’t Run features a dolls head with a real human eye inserted.
A difference between both products is that AHS’ intro does not feature the characters that are involved in the main show; they tend to opt
for scenes that will shock the audience and prepare them for the story with the content in the main show, however my product features the
main setting and the 2 main character as the centre of the intro as I felt this would be a good way to showcase the characters in a small
amount of time whilst also introducing their personalities and a certain amount of themes that would be used in the show. Overall the
technical qualities and professionalism of AHS will always be better due to a big scale budget and professional writers. Saying that, I believe
that my piece is technically very impressive and involves a good level of themes and motifs that will suit the target audience.
7. Aesthetic Qualities
I believe that my work looks good and will be considered so by the target
audience. I carefully chose a font which reflected the content and themes of
my product which is also one I have tested with an audience before which
excellent reactions. The quality of the camera that I filmed with and the use
of focus and depth of field made the piece look professional and helped
create the tension that is key in this genre. I am extremely happy with the
way I have assembled and edited my film as well and pleased that some of
the effects used in the film for the first time worked successfully and look
good.
A large weakness regarding the aesthetic of my film is the colour grading and
exposure. This is due to my lack of experience in this specific area however I
believe I can improve through research and practice in this area. If I were to
improve this I would involve a wider variety of shots and motions as I felt this
is something I missed in my final product.
8. Audience Appeal
My questionnaire showed that my a large amount of my sample group enjoy
thrillers the most which I think my product could also fall into. Although
branded as a horror, my piece features psychological concepts that could
also fall into the thriller genre. I intended to aim my piece at the
psychographic profile of experiencer which means that the product is meant
to induce an emotional response. I believe that my product creates the
emotional response of fear and discomfort which is vital in the horror and
thriller genres. My questionnaire also indicated that the my audience were
an average of 19. I adapted to this by suiting my product to a 15 age rating as
this made it accessible to a wider audience whilst still being suitable to the
target audience. I followed the BBFC 15 rating to include things that would
be suitable. Arguably, my piece could be a 12 rating due to the content not
being shown fully because it is only an intro however I made the piece with
the 15 rating in mind and the main content of the series woul also be 15
rated. My product mainly features what would be considered threat through
distressing content such as the mental patient and the doll's eye. It also
features slight references to the language catergory due to religious
references which could, in some ways, be offensive to some people. Overall,
I believe that my target audience would enjoy my product as it fills the
requirements of pyschographic profiles and also the profile I have built
through my primary and secondary research. My only concern would be the
BBFC rating being too high however I do not believe this will be too much of
an issue as it is not putting vulnerable people at risk, such as minors and
anyone under the age rating.
10. Feedback 1
• What did you like about the product?
– I like the creepy aesthetic and over all atmosphere of
the piece.
– The use of effects and editing is impressive.
– Camera techniques are used well.
– Font fits well with the production.
• What improvements could have been made to
the product?
Some scenes could be considered to bright but
other than that I can’t find anything wrong with it.
11. Feedback 2
• What did you like about the product?
– I really like the whole of this I like the style of filming
and the voice in the background, I also like the editing
of the dolls eye I think that and the bees made it scary
and intense
• What improvements could have been made to
the product? I would have made it longer
because I feel like you could have told more
about it
12. Feedback 3
• What did you like about the product?
– I really liked the camera effects such as when then
camera warped around the characters. I also like the
editing around the masked man as it really
emphasises the horror genre.
– The music and audio also supports the genre very well
and all fits in very nicely.
• What improvements could have been made to
the product?
– One of the scenes has a mix of post audio and camera
audio and it doesn’t fit well so maybe remove the
camera audio from that scene
13. Peer Feedback Summary
• What do you agree with from your peer feedback?
I agree with a lot of the feedback especially with the suggestion that some of
the scenes were too bright. This is something I could definitely improve on in
future projects. I believe this is due to my lack of experience in the areas of
brightness, contrast and exposure however I know I can improve on these
things in the future. Some of the scenes did feature a mixture of post audio
and audio from the camera which I did not notice upon rendering the final
piece. I have since amended this as it was a fast process of just unlinking the
audio from the clip and then deleting it
• What do you disagree with from your peer feedback?
I disagree with the comments made about the length of the piece as it is sure
due to it being an introductory sequence. I believe that my peers did not
realise this and thought it may have been a story driven film. To improve on
this, I should make clear what the sequence actually is however I also feel as
though this was fairly self explanatory.
14. Peer Feedback Summary
I believe my feedback was helpful and pointed out things
that I did not realise such as the post audio. Although I didn’t
necessarily agree with everything that my peers had to say
about my piece, the criticism was very constructive and
aided me in finalising the my piece. To improve, I will study
more into brightness and post editing footage as this was
pointed out to be a major downfall in final render. I will do
this by spending my free time experimenting with different
colour gradings and effects on Premier Pro and other similar
softwares. Overall, I am pleased with the feedback I have
been given by my peers as it made me notice things that I
would not have done as I had seen the piece lots of times.
From here, I would like to progress onto more visual based
effects which I can do in my own time.
