3. Concept Boards
I really like the idea of using back and
white for this project as it reflects a
raw/rough style which will blend well
with the street setting of the piece.
Black and White portraiture is
something I would like to explore
whilst doing this project as I believe
there are a lot of great image stills
that could be pulled from my footage.
This aesthetic, combined with the
knowledge I have gained for framing
and lighting shots, will be a fun
challenge for me to conduct as I
continue to further my skills.
5. Concept Boards
The theme of music in reference to art is extremely
important to this project. With the closures of lots of
local music venues and the current crop of talent in the
hip hop genre, some hip hop fans have no hope for the
future of their art. These images reflect the culture and
the scene of local music and hip hop as a whole; which
are two things that my subject is very passionate about. I
would like to give the audience a true insight into the
culture of local music and believing
in your own art.
6. Script
For my project, I will not construct a formal script as
I do not want the subject or the audience to think
that it is staged; this would take away the purity of
the piece. I would also not want to make the
subject not trust me by believing this piece would
not be a true representation of himself. Instead of
creating a script, I create a pathway with a
progression of conversation to which I can try and
lead. I have created a series of questions which I
believe can lead into some interesting topics.
7. Location
The film will feature various locations all within the Harrogate
area, as this is where the subject is from. I'd like to centralise
the project to Harrogate as this will make the subject more
comfortable and have more to show and talk about. As I know
the area extremely well, as will my crew, this will be a great
advantage as it is accessible to all and takes away the risk of
getting lost/feeling unsafe in certain areas.
I would like to film the subject on a normal day and just follow
them around their life. This will give me some great footage
which can be used throughout the piece and I believe will also
make the subject more comfortable with the interview
technique and setting which will possibly make them more
open to questions later on in the process. I have picked out
some areas in the Harrogate which I would like to m
8. Finance
Transport:
The financing for this trip will mainly include transport fees, such as trains/buses. I suspect that this will require
around a week of filming so I have calculated the total cost of transport for a week.
2 Crew members from Knaresborough(Base location) to Harrogate (filming location) day return on the train will
cost £4.80
£4.8 x 7 = £33.60
With 7 days of filming this would be a total of £33.60 for transport costs. 7 days of filming would not be
consecutive as I would like for the chronological order to be staggered. This will allow Tre (the subject) will be
able to have more of a story to tell as I do not want to exhaust the topic of conversation.
Equipment:
The financing of the equipment will be the most expensive in both pre-production, production and post
production. The camera I will be using (Sony FDR AX53) has a RRP of £749.00 in Curry’s; by far the most costly
item for this project. I have chosen this specific camera due to its capabilities with 4k camera quality and
amazing handheld functions. I will be using a secondary camera, Cannon 700D, for B roll footage and other
shots which provide a different angle to create depth. This is not included I the pricing as I am able to loan this
for free along with other equipment such as lighting and backdrop. This is, however, subject to availability so I
need to have a filming date scheduled as soon as possible to avoid not being able to acquire specific
equipment. Another piece of equipment that I have sourced is a 14 inch ring light created by Neewer which is
available on Amazon for £42.99. I believe this is another essential piece of equipment for lighting “formal”
interview like settings. This allows me to light the subject effectively without over exposing their face.
9. Time Management
Time management has been an issue for me in
previous projects due to the volume of work I put
on myself. However, I have learned from past
projects to create schedules and stick to them with
commitment to get separate aspects of the project
completed on time. I have allocated 7 weeks for
overall production, which subsequently breaks
down into; 3 weeks for production, 1 week for
drafting and reshooting(if necessary) and finally 3
weeks for post production.
10. Personnel/Crew
There will be a two person crew (including myself) with one person
operating camera and sound equipment and the other directing and
organising the shots. I think this is practical due to the small scale of
production we will be using. I will be organising the production so I can
plan shots correctly and will also be serving as interviewer. By keeping
a small crew, it will aslo decrease the budget on things such as
transport, facilities and wages. In addition to this, I believe when
conducting interviews and profiles, the subject will feel more
comfortable with a small number of crew involved and are more likely
to be more fluent and confident speaking with their answers.
I also believe it will be helpful to have a peer involved in the
production of my work as they will have a different angle/perception
of the product as a consumer so may be able to provide another
outlook on the project however I will have to final directing decision.
11. Camera
For the shoot I will be using 2 cameras to create diverse angles and capture as much footage as possible
in my time with the subject. The primary camera I will be using is the Sony FDR-AX53 which has 4k
recording capabilities and built in steady-cam correction for handheld shots. I chose this camera due to
its advanced capabilities and its light handheld structure which makes it easier to create
dynamic/moving shots whilst retaining its high quality recording. I will mainly use this camera for shots
which require the camera to move/pan because of these reasons.
The secondary camera I will be using is a Canon 700D DSLR. This will be loaned to me from college free
of charge however is a rental so I will make sure that I book the camera out as soon as I have a
confirmed filming day to avoid availability problems. The DSLR will be used mainly for secondary angles
in interviews to great depth in the scene and capture another angle to make the scene more dynamic.
In comparison, the Sony is a superior camera in terms of video recording however it will be useful to
have the Canon for set photography and creating promotional and marketing pictures. All cameras will
be carried with spare batteries that are fully charged. I will also carry a portable power bank with me to
charge things like phones, lights and other equipment which may need charging. Accompanying this, I
will carry multiple SD Cards, one 64GB and one 16GB as these are the ones that I own personally. I also
have various pieces of back up equipment available to me provided by college, such as spare lights, SD
Cards, backdrops and camera accessories and equipment.
Overall, I have a good variety and selection of cameras to use which will aid me in creating a
professional looking product in the end. I have experience in both photography and video production
from previous projects and plan to utilise these throughout the project
12. Sound
For the sound production, I will be primarily using the built in microphone on the Sony
FDR-AX53 as I believe this is good enough for general purpose recording and in
outdoor environments. For recording indoor, in interview style formality, I will use the
Tascan DR05V2 which is a handheld voice recorder good for recording interviews and
indoor conversational clips. This will be a loan piece from college so will be subject to
availability however I believe it is a piece of equipment which will be very beneficial to
my production as a whole. I will make sure to book this equipment as soon as why
filming date is set in stone.
The audio editing will be done on Adobe Audition; which will mainly be used to filter
out background noise and refine natural acoustics. Also to edit the monologues into
sequences which can be easily arranged when in Premiere Pro.
I will also bring in independent musicians to collaborate with myself to create a
bespoke soundtrack that reflects the themes of the product and the ideas that they
create. My friend Melvin, who has curated a soundtrack for a previous collaborative
project which included a similar theme however I would like to create a new piece
from scratch.
13. Post Production
The post production of the project (regarding audio and video editing) will all
be conducted by myself on the Adobe Creative Suite in a mixture of work at
college and independently at home. I have scheduled 3 weeks of my
production time to be solely for post production. This will allow me to direct
my focus primarily on the editing and drafting of the final product knowing
that I have no more footage or content left to create. Alongside the 3 weeks, I
will also edit sequences and begin piecing together the final piece in the
downtime of production; for example after a day of shooting I will begin to
create draft sequences by lining audio to video and editing the angles of
specific sequences. I think this will give me the best chance to manage my
time effectively and create a successful product.
The video will be edited on Premiere Pro CC as this is the video editing
software that I have most experience using and has been used for all of my
projects. I will also use Photoshop to create specific graphics like title and
credits sequences as this is much more effective in aspects such as text
manipulation.
