2. Fonts
The first thing I have chosen to do when creating my product is create
a logo. I knew I wanted to create a unique and iconic logo that people
would see as professional and recognisable. My first step in doing this
was to find a font suitable for the colour scheme I wanted. Below are
a selection of fonts I thought would be good for this project. By using
Dafont.com I found a selection of fonts that I thought could create a
dynamic logo. Fatboy Slim font is a rough style which I think fits the
gritty underground themes that go with the genre of Hip-Hop’s
origins. The first Neon font (in the middle) is quite a simplistic,
handwritten style which I thought was quite unique however during
experimenting with the font, I found that this font was too thin and
empty to make anything iconic with. It is also reminiscent of the artist
Joji’s Ballads logo which I wanted to stay away from due to audience
comparing similarities. The bottom Neon font I found to be quite
complex however I imagined how this would look with full animated
graphics that make the logo look like a realistic Neon light found in
dive bars and music venues. I decided the choose the latter due to
this. The next step would be to take this into Photoshop and build up
the colours and definition to make it realistic.
3. Development
I created a square frame in Photoshop as I wanted to create
the logo to be a profile picture for social media accounts as
this would be important for creating a strong online
presence. I was quite impressed with the effectiveness of
the font when laid on a black background. By following an
online tutorial I created the realistic neon sign effect which I
think worked extremely well. To do this I added an Inner
Glow effect with the colour red and changed the settings to
make the glow affect the edges of the lettering and not the
centre as this did not work with the effect. From here, I
added the outer glow with the same shade of red which
worked in cohesion with the other effects to create a light
source effect. I knew I had to add something else to the logo
so I added 2 rings around the font as this is commonly used
in neon signs.
4. Final Logo
The final logo worked exactly as expected
with the logo looking like a realistic neon
sign that would be found in dive bars
where live music is commonly found.
From this point, I had the idea of
animating the logo to have the lights
flashing and pulsing like a broken sign.
This coupled with electrical sound effects
would make the logo have a realistic feel.
5. Filming.
I have been filming my product for the main series Rap Out. This began by entering the studio in
college with several subject, one at a time. To film this piece, I used a white background which was
evenly lit and had the subject sit infront of it. Upon filming, I experimented with angles that would
be suitable for the product. I firstly tried a head on angle but found that this created a lot of tension
by having the subject look straight at the camera. I then decided to have the subject diagonally
angled to the right which provided me with a few significant details. The first was that this created a
lot of negative space to the left of the shot which would allow me to add certain graphics and
pictures to the side of the shot.
I interviewed 3 subjects for the process each reacting to 4 different songs each. This provided me
with a lot of content which would provide multiple episodes of Rap Out. The episodes would be put
out weekly which provided me with approximately 12 weeks of content just for the main series.
1 of the subjects was not very receptive to the interview type filming style and did not produce
enough reaction to the songs to create a full episode for. I ended up having to scrap this shoot
regrettably however it just wouldn’t have worked in as a full episode.
Other than that the shoots were a great success, providing me with a lot of content for the series.
6. Graphics
Creating the graphics for the series
was an interesting process as I just
could not get them right. This
graphic was created in Photoshop to
accompany the first episode. It
features the group Flatbush Zombies
are some facts and notable works
that they created. Overall, I do not
like this graphic I have created. It
looks cheap and tacky but when
fiddling with it I just could not find a
way to incorporate this into the
project as it just didn’t fit the
themes at all. The image to the right
is from google images and is
surrounded by a stock image of a
frame. I liked this idea as it
contrasted the slime and dirt of the
other scene. This is then surrounded
by a neon frame similar to the logo
of the main series. I am
disappointed that some of my
production time has been wasted
creating this product.
7. Graphics
As the last graphics was a flop, I
needed to create a dynamic graphic
that would fit the themes of my
product. Using the colour scheme of
my previous graphic, I wanted to
create something that would feature
in all of the episodes and would be
iconic to the series. When thinking
about the hard hitting music that
would be playing in the background,
I decided that this would look very
interesting as a waveform. Using this
idea I had to find a way to create a
PNG wavefrom of the song to
transfer into Photoshop. I used the
website Transloadit.com, which
converted the song completely into
an image. I took this file into
Photoshop and duplicated the layer
to make 2 subsections which would
be contrasting colours. The final
image then would travel across the
screen in time with the music to
create a moving graphic effect.
