3. Which specific production tasks have you
enjoyed most this year?
• A task that I especially enjoyed throughout the duration of my course would be the
videogame-making one. I found myself to not only enjoy the topic of video games, what
made my research easier and more enjoyable, but also the production of my
animation itself was very fun.
At first, I was overwhelmed by the programme I was meant to use and technical part of
the task, however, with time I managed to get familiar enough to not see it as an
obstacle which allowed me to focus on releasing my creativity.
I liked being able to draw anything I wanted, not limiting myself to a specific genre
of games or real-world limitations (like finding an actress/actor to feature in my
product), instead I was able to draw almost anything I wanted. And it so happened that
I not only managed to enjoy the process, but the aftermath of my work was very much to
my liking. I think that this specific production was one of the few I was 100% proud
of, especially my pixel art, and I would not mind doing it as a possible future
career.
4. What challenges have you faced this
year in your practical work?
• When thinking about challenges that I had to face, I can't help but think about
troubles I had with producing my music video project. Overall, the final product
was not to my liking, some parts of it I liked, for most of them I had to settle
for.
Finding a good cast was the biggest problem for me, all people featured in the
piece ended up being a result of desperation and having to change m plans last-
minute. This was mostly the result of my time-managing and planning. I was not
able to involve some of the original actors I planned to include, primarily due
to time clashes, the process of organising a recording my footage was stressful,
and I did not enjoy it so much when comparing it to different productions I have
done.
5. Which process do you think you have
made the most development in?
• The most developing process for me was production. All the preparation, planning
and researching always led to me having to figure things out on my own anyways.
By that I mean that no matter the preparation I did, no matter the type of
production I was doing whether it was filming or photoshop editing I was always
figuring stuff on the spot, and I always found it to be the most developing for
me as a creator.
When filming I was always producing more ideas and solutions, on how and what to
film and playing around with using the equipment.
When editing or creating in photoshop I was constantly put in a position when I
had to get to know the programme more, whether by playing around on my own until
I find a solution to my problem or googling a tutorial online.
Overall I feel like I always have learned a lot when having to work on something
myself
6. Which technical skill do you think is your
strongest?
• Like I mentioned before I feel the proudest of my animation project. I think one
of the reason I enjoyed so much is because I felt comfortable with my Photoshop
skills, as well as my artistic abilities.
When starting this project, I have already acquired substantial knowledge about
operating the software and did not struggle when having to figure stuff out on my
own- all because my familiarity with Photoshop. Thus, having to technical barrier
stopping me, I feel like I was able to reach my full potential and be able to
express myself with my pixel art.
I was also rather satisfied with my film poster and magazine cover- both edited
using Photoshop.
7. What do you think has been your best
project and why?
• Previously mentioned animation project made me 100% proud of my work for the first
time this year. This is not to say that I have nothing negative to say about my final
product, it had some flaws but they were minor mistakes I let myself forge about as it
was my first time doing anything of that sort.
Of course, if given more time I think I would do a better job than I did, but
considered the amount of time we ad I’m very happy with the final result and had a lot
of fun when producing it. Because it was an individual work nd it did not require me
to stress about finding and managing other people, it made me feel like I have a lot
of control over the final look of the project
I feel like I have put much effort into designing the main character, as well as
levels and enemies and the result of it showcases my hard work.
I have also made the trailer for it quite cinematic, in my opinion, which connects it
to my interest in filmmaking.
Overall I found it to be a great experience
8. Which project did you enjoy least and
why?
• I feel like the Audio task proved to be the biggest challenge as an overall task
I had to perform throughout this course.
Although the topic I chosen, and the overall horror genre of my project was much
to my liking, it was the actual production that to me happened to be not
enjoyable in the slightest. And I feel like it’s only fair to mention that the
research and pre-production planning for this unit was one of my favourites of
the whole year.
It was the moment of recording my first line as the narrator of the piece, where
I have realised that this might be way harder than I have imagined it to be. I
struggled with pronouncing certain words (due to my nationality and language
skills), I have also struggled to deliver m lines in an adequate tone that
matched conventions of the horror genre.
Having to listen to my voice in postproduction was also unpleasant and overall I
wish I did not decide on casting myself as the narrator.
9. How have you managed your time
effectively this year?
• Overall my time-managment skills were not too bad this year. In most cases I was
fine uploading my work on time and I did not miss any important deadlines.
I can openly admit that I often have a bad habit of postponing my work till the
very las minute, and this caused me some trouble over the duration of this
course.
On certain occasion I was forced to abandon ideas and plans for certain products,
simply because I have ran out of time to do them (e.g. music video production
where I did not have enough shots and had to improvise in post-production).
Although not desirable, this did not cause me any bigger problems like massively
falling behind on work, I was always capable of getting thing uploaded; It was
always the quality of my workthat happened to take the most if any damage as a
result of this habit.
11. What roles/specialism do you see
yourself working in on future projects?
• Basing my answer off my experience with this course, surprisingly I think I would
see myself working in the videogame industry rather than film industry like I was
planning at the beginning of the course. That's obviously not to say that the
course itself negatively impacted the way I see the art of filmmaking, but what
it did was introduce me to new, unfamiliar platforms for art I was amazed by.
I feel like the module focusing on videogames had such big impact on me because
it felt new and refreshing. It also allowed me to work on my own, which I did not
know I prefer from working in the group.
To put it shortly, I'm still yet to discover the full potential of the gaming
industry, as well as how realistic it is for me to get a job in it, but I believe
that this would be a good career path to aim at.
12. What research do you need to do in order to
explore your future progression options?
• Starting with crucial information, I would be researching active people working
in the video game industry and checking their academic background. I want to know
how many of them got to where there are through university courses and how many
of them started with no academic predispositions but instead just learn
themselves. Through my research I have found out that many game creators started
as amateur game developers and trough releasing more products, they became more
recognizable.
However, I will still consider this as my second option since I wish to stay in
education. My next step would be to research best video game designing courses at
several universities, get to know which one would be most suitable for my needs
and interests. I might even consider being a concept artist for video games, if
coding is not something I'm turn out to be big on.
Editor's Notes
Consider 2-3 specific practical parts of your work this year [e.g. filming or editing, etc] and discuss why these have been your favoured parts of the course so far
Think about the work that has been most challenging this year [try and be specific when talking about tasks] and how you responded to it?
A process would be research or planning or time management, it could be a combination. Talk about what it is, how you feel you’ve developed and where this was most evident in the year
This is a technical skill like filming, editing, photo manipulation, designing adverts or using Photoshop – think of an example that shows your strength
