A Brief Introduction to Communication

Communication?
Question-answer Session
8. Unit1: A Brief Introduction to
Communication
Communication may be defined as interchange of
information between two or more people
to bring about mutual understanding and the
desired action.
Every communication involves (at least) one sender,
a message and a recipient. This may sound simple,
but communication is actually a very complex area of
research .
9.
10. ELEMENTS OF COMMUNICATION
Sender or transmitter: The person who desires to convey the
message is known as sender. Sender initiates the message and
changes the behaviour of the receiver.
Message: It is a subject matter of any communication. It may
involve any fact, idea, opinion or information. It must exist in the
mind of the sender if communication is to take place.
Encoding: The communicator of the information organizes his
/her idea into series of symbols (words, signs, etc.) which, he/she
feels will be accordingly communicated to the intended receiver.
11. Communication channel:
The sender has to select the channel for sending the information.
Communication channel is the source through which the message
passes. It is the link that connects the sender and the receiver.
Receiver:
The person who receives the message is called receiver or
receiver is the person to whom the particular message is sent by
the sender. The communication process is incomplete without the
existence of receiver of the message. It is a receiver who receives
and tries to understand the message.
12. Feedback:
Feedback in the present context, refers to the reaction/response
of the receiver. The reaction or response of the receiver is an
important dimension of communicative process as it adds value to
the overall act of communication (Priya & Bisen, 2009).
Decoding:
Decoding is the process of interpretation of an encoded message.
Decoding helps the receiver to understand the meaning of the
message sent by a sender.
13.
14.
15. CATEGORIES OF COMMUNICATION
There are a wide range of ways in which we communicate
and more than one may be occurring at any given time.
The different categories of communication include:
•SPOKEN OR VERBAL COMMUNICATION: (includes
face-to-face communication , telephone, radio, television,
etc.)
•NON-VERBAL COMMUNICATION: (covering body
language, gestures, how we dress or act, where we stand,
and even the scent we use. For example, the tone of voice
can give clues to mood or emotional state, whilst hand
signals or gestures can add to a spoken message)
16. WRITTEN COMMUNICATION:
(is the act of writing, typing or printing symbols like
letters and numbers to convey information. It is helpful
because it provides a record of information for reference.
Writing is commonly used to share information through
books, pamphlets, blogs, emails, letters, memos, etc.)
17. VISUAL
COMMUNICATION:
Visual Communication is the act
of using photographs, art,
drawings, sketches, charts and
graphs to convey information.
Visuals are often used to provide
helpful context alongside written
and/or verbal communication.
Because people have different
learning styles, visual
communication might be more
helpful for visual learners to
consume ideas and information.
18.
19. Common Barriers to Effective
Communication:
1. The use of Jargon
2. Discussions including Taboos
3. Lack of attention or interest, issues of
distractions & irrelevance
4. Physical disabilities such as hearing problems or
speech difficulties.
5. Unintelligible Dialects
20. 6. Barriers related to Communicative Channels
7. False Expectations leading to False
Assumptions
21.
22.
23. Four Key Areas for Improvement
There are generally four main areas of
communication skills that most of us would like to
improve.
1. Learning to Listen
2. Understanding Non-Verbal Communication
3. Emotional Awareness
4. Understanding and thereby Improving
Questioning-Skill
