5. INTRODUCTION
• Leagans (1961) defined communication as a process by
which two or more people exchange ideas, facts,
feelings, impressions, in ways that each gains a clear
understanding of the meaning, intent and use of
the message.
• Sucessful communication in extension education requires
a skilled communicator sending a useful message
through a proper channel, effectively treated to an
appropriate audience that responds as desired.

7. COMMUNICATOR
Initiates the process of communication
Encoder of communication
Determines purpose of message
May be an individual, a change agent, a group or a
social system
Translate intent into action
Creates intent to change in the client, a motive to
innovate
8. MESSAGE
Alternations or disturbances of the physical
environment, which can be intended to and
discriminated from the rest of the physical
environment.
Information which is being communicated
Messages are facts, feelings, impressions , attitude or
information.
9. CHANNELS
Tunnels through which a message passes like a rail.
Means or pathways or devices through which
messages are communicated
Channels may be:
1. Verbal
2. Non-verbal
3. Interpersonal
4. Mass media type
10. TREATMENT
It is actual message therapy to make it clear and
understandable to the audience yet keeping the
meaning same.
So rumours are not the treated messages they are
distorted ones.
Involves use of critical thinking skills, knowledge to
make the message effective for the audience to
understand or grasp.
11. AUDIENCE
It is said that we should target our audience and I
thought the background picture is the easiest way.
Intended recipient/consumer of a message.
They are generally a group of people who decode the
message through all their senses but most often by
listening and seeing
In extension education they are our farmers
12. RESPONSE
According to leagans audience response comes from
their background in extension education.
In a simple dictionary response means a “reaction to
something.”
Simply means feedback which taps basic human
needs to improve, to compete, to be accurate.
It depends upon :communication skills, attitudes,
knowledge level, position in a socio- cultural system.
