1. WHICH KIND OF MEDIA INSTITUTION MIGHT
DISTRIBUTE YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT AND WHY?
2. WHAT IS A MEDIA INSTITUTION?
A media institution is a company that owns numerous companies involved in mass
media enterprises, such as television, radio, publishing, motion pictures, theme
parks, or the Internet.
What media institutions are out there?
Bauer media Time Inc. UK
Bauer Media UK is an entertainment
network of iconic, multi-platform brands.
Founded in Hamburg in 1875,
the Bauer Media Group operates in 19 countries
including the UK, Germany, Poland, Australia,
New Zealand and the USA.
Time Inc. is one of the world's
leading media companies, their
influential brands include
People, Sports Illustrated, InStyle,
Time, Real Simple, Southern Living,
Entertainment Weekly, Travel +
Leisure, Cooking Light, Fortune and
Food & Wine, as well as more than
50 diverse titles in the United
Kingdom such as Decanter and
Horse & Hound
3. IMMEDIATE MEDIA
Immediate media is the special
interest content and platform
company. It has some of the best
loved brands in the UK which contains
a wide range of magazines, from
Mountain Biking to knitting.
Advantages
An advantage of using Immediate media, would be the fact that they only produce
two music magazines “BBC Music” and “Radio Times”. These magazine are
popular, but only have an audience for older generations. “BBC Music” in particular,
only focuses on classical music. This means that there is space for my magazine.
They don’t own anything like my magazine at all. They don’t have a magazine with a
rock genre or one which has a younger audience. My magazine is new to them and
will create and opportunity for them to gain profit as well as a whole new audience.
Disadvantages
However, Immediate media may not want my magazine. As not having one like this
sets them apart from other companies. They may want to keep what they have as
my magazine doesn’t really fit in with their other magazines, which all aimed
towards and older audience. They might want to keep it this way.
4. BAUER MEDIA
From this screenshot we can see that the
institution Bauer media distribute the magazines;
Kerrang!, MOJO and Q.
Advantages
The magazine Kerrang! Has a target audience for
teenagers just like my magazine and also focuses
around the same genre. At first, this could look
like a disadvantage, however because they have
a magazine similar to mine it shows that they
would be interested in my magazine. Kerrang also
produces its product weekly, whereas my
magazine is monthly. So my magazine differs to
the magazine which they already produce. We
can see that Bauer seem to be interested in the
rock genre. Which means a lot of their audience
are interested in rock. By having my magazine,
this will create more profit for the company as
they will buy my magazine each month as well as
the Kerrang! Magazine weekly.
5. Disadvantages
The disadvantages of using Bauer media, would be the fact that they do
already have Kerrang! As their main rock magazine. They may not see that
point or the need for another magazine with the same genre. As Kerrang! Is
already so popular.
There is also the fact that my magazine and Kerrang! Also have the same
target audience, with evidently would mean that it is quite similar to Kerrang! So
this would put Bauer off of my magazine. They may be looking for a magazine
with a different target audience.
Time Inc.UK
Time Inc. distributes the music magazine NME.
Advantages
Like my magazine NME’s genre focuses around Indie
rock and rock music. But like Kerrang! It is published
weekly whereas my magazine is published monthly
making my magazine “Amplified!” different to NME.
The publishing company also only produces this
music magazine, meaning that they have room and
will be willing to look at my magazine and many others.
6. They do not have a music magazine that is published monthly, so because my
magazine is published monthly. This may attract the company to my magazine. The
magazine NME also has and older audience. Whereas my audience is for teenagers.
So my magazine is something completely new, which Time Inc.UK don’t already have.
They will gain something by having my magazine It will be beneficial to them. As like
Kerrang! It would gain a huge audience, who will always buy the magazine. This means
that my magazine will definitely give the company a profit.
Disadvantages
However, Time Inc. UK may not have other magazines for a reason. Perhaps because
most their magazines are aimed towards a older audience. They would not want my
magazine as it is something completely different to what they already have. They may
not want to have music magazines. As we can see many of their brands are for adults,
with magazines such as; Ideal Home, Homes and gardens. Which are magazines
which would not interest a younger person. Their magazines are also very professional
and clean looking. Whereas my magazine is grungy and the total opposite. So this
could put them off my magazine. Also, their magazines seem to be for higher classes,
this could mean that they think my magazine is not for them as my magazine is aimed
towards a different social class.
7. MY CHOSEN MEDIA INSTITUTION
For my magazine I have chosen Bauer Media. This is because I feel like
the advantages outweigh the disadvantages the most for this institution.
Bauer already publishes a wide range of magazines. 3 of which are
music based. So my magazine will want to be looked at. Whereas with
Time Inc. UK they do not have many music magazines meaning they
aren’t interested in these types of magazines. Instead they produce
magazines about healthy lifestyles and homeware.
Although Amplified is similar to Kerrang! My magazine also has it’s
differences. It is produced monthly not weekly and will have unique
content such as the gallery and meet and greet section. Which is not
included within Kerrang! This makes my magazine new and unique
compared to the other 3 magazines they already have. I also know that
the institution have a budding, music loving audience who will be willing
to check out and buy my new magazine. So we already know that it will
be popular and will create profit for the company. This would be different
if I used Time Inc. UK as they do not have the audience that will read my
magazine. Their magazines are aimed towards the older generations so
younger readers may be put of my magazine if it is published by them as
they would think it is not for them.
