1. WHAT KIND OF MEDIA INSTITUTION MIGHT
DISTRIBUTE YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT AND WHY?
2. HOW A MAGAZINE IS MADE?
A magazine doesn't completely start with paper, there are several things you have to do and look out for
before you can start to print your magazine. The first thing that you have to do in order to create a
successful magazine would be to select a theme for your magazine, for example: pop music magazine,
football magazine or a gossip magazine. Once you have decided on a theme for your magazine, the next
thing would be to write articles and to take pictures/ images of things you want in your magazine, or you
can get them from journalist and photographers. After that, the editor of the magazine should decide what
goes in and what doesn’t go into the magazine in terms of articles. Finally you have to chose a layout for
the magazine your are creating as you cant just have all the articles all together in one page. When all
those things are finished, you will need to chose a colour pattern that suits the magazine and corresponds
with the demographic that you are trying to sell your magazine at.
Now it comes to the printing stage of the process of making your magazine, first of all you need to think
about the number of pages that your magazine will have, then you need to think about the size of the
magazine, will it be an A4 size(8 1/4 x 11 11/16)? A5(5 13/16 x 8 1/4)? Then when you have all those thing
figured out you need to print the magazine into a glossy paper (130 Gloss art paper) and when that its
done you need to think about what stitch will connect your pages together.
3. WHAT IS THE ROLE OF THE DISTRIBUTOR?
The role of the distributor for a magazine is to publish and print the magazine and spread the magazine
to many different stores where it will be sold. The distributor helps to publish the magazine because it
already has stores to take the magazines and sell them.
4. WHAT COMPANY WOULD DISTRIBUTE MY PRODUCT? AND WHY?
I think that my magazine has some good opportunity to be distributed by TimeIncUK as I have only found
two music magazines and one of them is about a different genre from my magazine (UNCUT) and the other
one is about iconic music and news relating to their genre (NME), therefore I think that my pop themed
magazine will fit this company well as it good be a good opportunity to expand their company to reach a
new audience in the market. As for other magazine publishers such as Bauer Media they might need
another pop magazine, as they already have kerrang! which is about music and heat which is about
celebrity gossip which is like my product split in two magazines, therefore if they were to publish my
magazine they could potentially stop printing both magazines and print mine to save money and maximise
profit for the company, however, brand loyalty is likely to decrease as my magazine isn’t as well known.
My magazine would also represent the company quite well as it represents everything that the company is
about which is a love for music and the excitement that is spreading joy and happiness.
5. WHY MIGHT THEY DISTRIBUTE YOUR PRODUCT?
I think that the TimesIncUK is missing this demographic when trying to promote their products and
therefore adding my product to their line of brands will allow them to hit almost every demographic
and further increasing their profits. Which is beneficial for the company also, this could increase their
market share of the magazine industry. This could then lead to a higher control over other companies.
Also my product is very unique compared to what they already have that is related to music,
6. HOW WOULD MY MAGAZINE BE ADVERTISED?
My magazine would be advertise via other magazines that are similar in content or target a similar
audience/ demographic. After some research into ways of advertising magazines, I discovered that a TV
advert that is anywhere between 15 to 35 seconds in length, is enough time to get the point of what your
magazine is about and other details that you may want to add. If I were to advertise through a TV advert, I
would design the advert to be some flashing images that have some sort of relation to the magazine’s
content, then at the end of the advert I’ll add some exclusive things you may be able to get if you decide to
buy the magazine.
I would also set up social medias for the magazine itself, this is because my target audience is the most
likely to be on social media and therefore they would find us easily. In social media we would post secret/
exclusive articles, or offers such as a discount code for when you go to the physical shop and buy a physical
copy.
7. HOW WOULD MY PRODUCT BE DISTRIBUTED?
In this changing society, less and less people are actually reading magazines and books on paper and they
are switching to tablets or mobile phones therefore to distribute my magazine I would create a
subscription system that you have to access through the web and then you will have the magazine
delivered to your house the following day or a day before the magazine comes out as a perk of being
subscribed. Apart of subscribing to the magazine, we will try to sell them in both big and smaller retailers,
we will try incline the shop to put the magazine in the view of everyone or next to the cashiers.
