Question 3
1. Question 3
The magazines in which I have mentioned, compared and analysed in this evaluation are
NME and Q. The reason to why I have specifically focused on these two magazines so far are
due to the fact that they are both marketed as a magazine representing the same (if not,
similar) genre to which mine does.
There are loads of magazines out there aimed at producing content on mainstream pop
music, there are also a few aimed at R&B and Rap however indie rock doesn’t have a huge
selection of magazines representing it. However NME and Q can both in some way be
classed as an indie rock magazine, NME more so though.
Q was created in the 1980s and since then has been marketed as a magazine focusing on
‘Alternative’ music. This is why although indie rock is a common theme there is also a lot of
other genres/ artists to regularly feature in Q magazines. Some may argue that the
‘alternative’ genre should be classed as NME anyway as it isn’t mainstream music but I don’t
totally agree, hence why I’ve described Q as a magazine for alternative music.
NME on the other hand is a through and through indie rock magazine. It is rare for artists
not in the indie rock scene to feature in the magazine as it is so dedicated to indie rock. I
have described my magazine as an indie rock magazine which is why I feel that my magazine
is more similar to NME.
I want my magazine to be one to rival NME, produce similar themed content, which will of
course attract a similar target audience. I have attempted to take inspiration from the
layout and the page design of Q more commonly In the designing stages of producing my
magazine due to the fact I feel aesthetically Q is a better magazine. However as I have
previously sad the content within my magazine will not be to dissimilar to the content
within NME.
This is why I feel it makes sense for the media institution to distribute my product to be the
same as NME.
The media institution that publish NME is Times Inc, and its not just the fact the produce
media for NME that attracts me to them, they also have other features which assure me
that they would be the correct I situation to publish my magazine.
Starting to produce a magazine is a difficult task, the mist difficult thing is getting
exposure and attention to/from potential buyers, well what better institution to publish
my magazine than one that ‘Engages with almost half of all uk adults in print and an
award winning website that reaches over 23 million global users every month’. Being
published by an institution of this size will surely give me enough publicity to get the
name ‘Live & Loud’ out there.
Although the indie genre has historically been seen as a very British thing indie
artists and bands have been gaining a large amount of attention within recent years
from overseas. In some parts of Europe the inde rock genre has started to get
attention, it has also become big in Australia. However in the USA the indie rock
genre has became massive. Meaning there are a large number of indie rock fans in
the states who of course could fall into the target market of our magazine. So any
exposure that the magazine has to American indie fans could potentially be bringing
in a new buyer.
Times inc have more offices located within the US than any other country. Office
locations include New York, Chicgo, L.A, Seattle, San Fransisco, Stamford and
2. Florida (Tampa). Due to the amount of offices located in the united states it is clear
that times inc is a large organisation within the US. This is why having this institution
publishing my magazine would lead to publicity in a country where a large proportion
of my target audience live thus meaning there is more chance of gaining more
readers.
