The document discusses potential media institutions to distribute a music magazine. It analyzes Bauer Media Group, IPC Media, Emap, and BBC Worldwide. Bauer Media Group publishes magazines like Kerrang!, Q, and Mojo, which are in the same genre as the author's magazine, so it would benefit distribution. IPC Media and Emap are established but don't focus on the music genre. BBC Worldwide only publishes one magazine genre, which isn't music. Therefore, Bauer Media Group would be the best option since it already publishes similar music magazines.

Distributing a music magazine through Bauer Media Group
1. What kind of media institution might distribute your media productand why?
Research…
I researched four different media institutions: Bauer, IPC Media, Emap and BBC Worldwide.
Bauer
Bauer Media Group is a large multi-national institution founded in 1875. Bauer
Media publish more than 600 magazines as well as managing 50 radio, TV and over
400 digital products. The music magazines Bauer are responsible for publishing
include Kerrang! Q and Mojo.
Bauer Media Group is a very established and admired industry and they publish the same
music genre as my music magazine, therefore I feel this institution would be beneficial for
my magazine.
IPC Media
IPC Media was founded in 1958. They have more than 60 iconic media brands
and is a multi-platform brand. They are the UK’s leading consumer magazine
publisher with print magazines reaching around 16 million UK adults. Some
magazines they produce are NME, Marie Claire, Chat, Golf Monthly, Now, Teen Now, Nuts,
Soap life, Shooting Gazette, What’s On TV, Woman’s Weekly and Home. NME is a
mainstream magazine.
Although IPC Media is a very established industry they don’t publish the same genre as my
magazine, therefore I don’t think this institution would be useful nor beneficial for my
magazine.
2. Emap
Emap owns leading brands in the magazine industry. Established in
1947, their magazine includes genres such as Retail, Health,
Construction, Architecture and Fashion. Brands at Emap includes Smash Hits (1978-2006),
Retail Week, H&V News, Nursing, Times.net, and Construction News. Because of Emap’s
brand focus on specific industries. I would say that Emap are not a very well-known
magazine industry this led me to believe they are a niche magazine industry.
Although Emap is an established and successful institution it wouldn’t be the best to
consider for my music magazine as their primary audience is aimed at Health. Due to the
lack of musical influence this institution would not be beneficial for me and my magazine.
BBC Worldwide
In 1985, the ‘television establishment’ was created to deal with the exploit of
television programmes. The ‘radio establishment’ was then created in 1965
however following the retirement of the radio enterprises general manager
in 1969, the two departments were merged to form the BBC Enterprises Department. In
1979, the department became BBC Enterprises LTD but was subsequently reorganised in
1995 as the BBC Worldwide LTD which is what we know it as today.
Although this institution is very popular and well-known they only publish one type of
magazine, which isn’t the same genre as my magazine. Other than that they tend to publish
more sports magazines which isn’t relevant, therefore it would not be the best option to
benefit my work.
3. Similar Magazine
Throughout my production Kerrang! Magazine has been my most inspirational music
magazine and I have based my design and features around it for my magazine. As I knew a
bit about the content of Kerrang! And they had a professional look about it, although I did
add my own unique vibe to my magazine. I have decided to focus my layout and design
around Kerrang! Because their genre and mine both fit in with the Bauer Music Group.
In addition to this Bauer use cross media promotional techniques to expand and elaborate
their products. Kerrang also have a radio station which promotes their magazine as well.
This suggests Bauer branch out from just magazines and use other cross media platforms
such as websites and music channels, which make strong links within the company. This also
means Bauer are willing to make it more popular due to it being more accessible.
Distribution Techniques
I feel it is important to look at all distribution techniques to ensure my target audience are
aware of my product and make sure I am able to compete with all competition if not beat
them. The most obvious and beneficial place to distribute my magazine would be
supermarkets and newsagents to reach to all/various audiences, as it is an everyday thing to
attend supermarkets weekly if not more frequent.
When taking my target audience into consideration and their interests which would most
likely help with the distribution. In addition to this my primary audience research and
questionnaire were majorly useful when deciding the best distribution locations.
From my research I found that most of my target audience attend some sort of education
whether it was secondary school, college or even university. Therefore I also feel it would be
beneficial to distribute a few of my magazines at population will most likely be there and
have access to my magazine. Due to the majority of my audience still being in education it is
a common feature that they receive low or no income, therefore my magazine needs to be
affordable for everyone. Also when deciding where to distribute my magazine, I established
my target audience go to rock concerts and festivals frequently, so it is another possible
place to reach the audience.
