Question 3
1. What kind of media institution might
distribute your media product and why?
2. A media institution is a company that owns companies that
are involved in mass media enterprises, such as television,
radio, publishing, motion pictures, theme parks, or the
Internet. These companies can be publically or privately
owned that produces and/or distributes the media product.
3. Bauer Media Group is a huge publishing company in the UK who not only publish magazines but also broadcast
Radio shows and stations, TV shows and are available on many different devices. They have a huge range of
magazines fit for anyone with any interests from fishing to other sports to music. For example, they publish sports
magazines such as ‘Gold World’ and ‘Trial Running’ and music magazines like ‘Kerrang’ and ‘Mojo’. They also do
Radio stations such as ‘Kiss’ and ‘Magic’. As well as that, on their website they specify what age range the shows
are recommended for and what they’re about. For example, ‘Kiss’ is recommended for 15-34 year olds and ‘Magic’
is for 25-54 year olds. An advantage of having Bauer Media Group publish my magazine is that it already publishes
music magazines like Kerrang! and so the target audience is the same to my magazine and therefore they might be
interested in looking into Unleash. However, Bauer Media Group doesn’t publish many music magazines that
include rap and because of this it might not be as popular as the other magazines that relate to each other.
4. I used NME music magazine as an inspiration for my media product and therefore I also looked into the company that
publishes it and found that Time Incorporated UK (TimeInc.UK) publishes NME music magazine. NME is a weekly
subscription and was originally founded by Theodore Ingham and the first issue published was in 1952 and was the first
British magazine to include the singles charts. I looked further into TimeInc.UK and found that the company publishes many
different style of magazines for different types of people with different interests. Along with NME, TimeInc.UK also publish
Uncut music magazine and both have a huge audience rating which adds to the success of the company, but both seem to
have an older audience. They both focus on different music genres, Uncut focusing more on the britpop genre and NME on
the rock and indie type of genre but also includes sections on the rap genre and because of this the company isn’t missing
out on anything as it’s publishing magazines that appeal to many different people. Seeing as TimeInc.UK publish media
products that appeal to the older audience, I believe it would be an advantage to have the company publish my magazine
product as it’s aimed at teenagers but also adults can enjoy it because of the wide content and therefore this would expand
the reader audience within the company and so more people would be willing to read and look into the media that
TimeInc.UK already publish. I feel that if TimeInc.UK published my magazine then ‘Unleash the underground’ would become
very popular in a short time period because of it’s success already and the fact that NME music magazine has previewed
content on rap and the readers liked it then a magazine that solely focuses on rap would become very successful.
5. I have chosen to have TimeInc.UK publish my magazine because I believe that they would be able to maximize
the popularity of my media product because of how well NME and Uncut are doing and because of that I believe
I will be able to maximize my audience simply because the target audience and the genres of my magazine and
NME are very similar. As well as that the fact that TimeInc.UK only have two existing music magazines that
they’re publishing, it would be a good way of increasing the music interests of the company.
Also due to the fact of ’Unleash the underground’ being a monthly subscription the it won’t affect the publicity
of NME as that is a weekly magazine. It will also be quite refreshing for the existing audience to see something
aimed at a younger generation as it will create interest in the magazine and the younger audience will finally feel
like TimeInc.UK is finally providing for them rather than the adult audience.
