Choosing a Media Distributor for a Dance Music Magazine

2. Q3. A Media Distributor is a company that
publish different types of media products such as
Magazines, TV and Radio. The distributors often
sell a wide variety of magazines from music
magazines to lifestyle magazines. For my
magazine to be placed in stores to be sold it has to
have a distributor. The distributor will create and
sell my magazine to retailers in order to make a
profit. Examples of media distributors are
companies such as Bauer Media Group, EMAP and
Time Inc.
3. About Bauer Media Group
• Bauer is a large European-based media company based in Hamburg, offering 300
magazines in 15 countries.. They manage more than 600 different magazines, 400 digital
products and also 50 Radio and TV stations. Bauer products include a variety of multi-
platform media which includes; print, digital, radio and TV. As well as magazines like ‘Take
a Break’ they also distribute a variety of puzzle magazines. Bauer also publishes ‘Kerrang!’
a UK based music magazine. Bauer is a popular distributor with a very good reputation
and therefore one I would like to distribute my magazine. Dance music magazines is an
aspect of music that Bauer haven’t really invested in so I feel it would be a good
opportunity for both them and my magazine. It is different from the normal style of music
magazine they publish (eg Kerrang) and also targets a different audience which perhaps
would persuade them to accept my magazine.
4. About EMAP
• EMAP (now owned by Bauer Media Group) is the distributor of
‘Q Magazine’. After Q Magazine was such a success they
decided to extend their music related products and published a
magazine named “MOJO”. As well as music magazines they also
specialise in business magazines and help to organise business
events/conferences. This I think is a disadvantage of using this
company as they may be associated more for business related
projects rather than music, especially dance music targeted at a
young audience.
5. About Time Inc.
• Time inc. is a publishing company based in New York, they
publish over 90 magazines including “Sports Illustrated”,
“InStyle” and “NME”. NME is a rock/alternative style music
magazine with a mature audience. This differs from my own
magazine as it is Dance based and is targeting a slightly
younger audience. This may be a disadvantage as my magazine
may not fit in with the mature magazines that Time Inc.
produce. However it could be beneficial for Time Inc. as it
would draw in a new, younger audience.
