The document discusses the design elements used in a music video, poster, and digipak to convey the emotional state of the main character. A black hoodie represents sadness while a light hoodie represents happiness. A vodka bottle signifies addiction and depression. Pills in the digipak represent his struggle with depression. The designs use minimal color and focus on the vodka bottle to show how addiction has consumed his life. Placement of the character and text elements are designed to portray his isolation and vulnerability.

EVALUATION QUESTION TWO
1. HOW EFFECTIVE IS THE COMBINATION OF
YOUR MAIN PRODUCT AND ANCILLARY TASK
2. MISE-EN-SCENE
• Hoodie
The hoodie itself plays a key role in our music video, it portrays his emotional status and outlook
on life depending on which of the two he is wearing. we chose to use opposing colours when
portraying his mood, the black hoodie representing the overwhelming sadness in his life and the
light coloured hoodie represents what little happiness he still grasps onto. We chose to use the
dark hoodie when constructing our digipak and poster as we felt as though it signified the sadness
that slowly consumes him.
• Vodka bottle
The vodka bottle represents his addiction, It is a clear hint to his depression and the fact that he
needs help. It is seen multiple times within the music video so having it as an addition to the digi
pack and poster was essential. The colour on the bottle itself has been amplified in the poster and
digipak in order to signify the power that it has over the character, the additional fact that the red
on the bottle is the only colour in the entire poster also amplifies this idea that it’s completely
consumed him.
3. MISE-EN-SCENE
• Pill bottle
The pill bottle within the music video represents his final battle with his depression, eventually
giving into his demons and potentially ending his own life. We wanted to emphasise on this
incident when designing the digi pack, we have edited a bird’s eye view of the pills itself and
placed it where the cd would sit. We decided to add the pills there as we felt as though it would be
hidden from the viewer till the cd was taken out, much like the effects of the pills being hidden from
our character until it was too late.
4. DESIGN
• Colour
Our overall designing process when creating the digi pack and poster was as follows, we
discussed the emotional impact that we were trying to give off the audience and how we managed
to achieve this in the music video. We agreed that the lack of colour helped set the mood of the
video so therefore it was crucial that we did the same for both the poster and digipak. We wanted
to imply that the character feels as though his life has been drained through the digipak and poster
and so chose to have the majority of the image in black and white, with the only colour being in the
label of the vodka bottle, therefore implying that the only meaning in his life comes from the
addiction.
• Vodka
Throughout the music video, the vodka bottle is almost always in the character’s hands or in his
vicinity, therefore we decided that the poster and digipak also had to include this motif. The fact
that the bottle is always with him highlights to the viewer exactly how much power the addiction
has over the character, we then emphasised this by him holding the bottle with both hands in the
poster and digipak.
5. DESIGN
• White Background
We decided to have the white and colourless background because of its relation to death as well
as how it amplifies how alone and lifeless the character feels. In religious context, the horseman
Death rode on a Pale Horse, as well as this, it’s also said that when someone dies they see a
“white light” - both of these facts relate to how close the character could be to death, leaving it
open to the audience’s interpretation in the same way the ending of the video makes the viewer
question whether the character died or not.
• Font
We used a handwritten font to make it seem as though the character wrote the title himself. It’s
often said that someone’s handwriting is personal to them, by making the font a handwritten font it
makes the entire story and theme of the video, poster and digipak more personal to the character,
emphasised by the “his story” on the poster.
6. LAYOUT
• Character
By putting the character at the edge of the image and being surrounded by the large empty space,
it demonstrates to the audience how the character himself feels empty and alone.
• Vodka bottle
By having the vodka bottle gripped in the characters hands with his head bowed, it mimics the
image of someone praying. This then relates to how, where some people turn to religion in their
time of need, the main character has turned to alcohol and addiction. As well as this, by having it
only half complete as an image in the digipak it implies that while the alcohol is still present in his
life, he’s fighting against the pull it has on him.
• Words
The title of the song is the first thing the audience sees, followed by the smaller “his story” - this
therefore implies the weight of the story and how much it’s affected him, putting the story at the
same level of importance as the song itself.
7. CONSTRUCTION OF REPRESENTATIONS
• Men
Our main character being a male shows deep vulnerability, this is an atypical representation as in society
men are seen as emotionless and are often portrayed as the enemy. We wanted to challenge this
convention as we felt as though men need to be seen in a positive light, we wanted to show our audience
that both men and women can have emotions and both require help when in these situations. Our
character shuts himself out of the outside world, keeping his emotions in and eventually turns to alcohol,
we wanted this to be a hint to men feeling as though they cant seek help and that keeping it within is the
only option and the issues that come with this mentality. We wanted to portray this vulnerability when
designing both digi pack and poster, this is the reason as to why he is on his own, with only the vodka
bottle around him.
• Women
The woman within our music video played the female lead ,depending on interpretation she was the reason
to the main characters spiral into depression. We wanted to make the female character represent the
‘problem in the relationship’ as we felt as though it was normally the males that was seen negatively in a
relationship. Her overall role was somewhat hidden to the audience, this is the reason as to why she isn't
seen in the poster nor digi pack.
8. COLOUR SCHEME
• Black and White
We chose to have the majority of the digipak and poster as black and white because it signifies his
life. The fact that there’s no colour in the images implies that his life has become very bland and
meaningless, the only things that he finds important in his life are shown through their colour - in
the case of the poster it’s the vodka bottle, and in the case of the digipak it’s the vodka bottle and
the spilled bottles.
• Video
For the music video, the colour scheme was dulled down when the character was on his own and
when he was in the flashback with his girlfriend, the colour of the shot and the costumes became
more vibrant and colourful, again implying how dull his life is without his girlfriend.
