1. The border around the poster is bolded
black and fades into the bottom of the
poster. The look of this is almost like
they are trying to replicate a polaroid
border or filter. Especially as polaroid's
are used more particularly by the
younger audience to capture moments.
Therefore this gives an indication to the
audience of the idea that Julia Robertsâ
character is trying to make her own
memories and rediscover her youth.
This idea of the female character trying to
rediscover her youth is shown again, through
the use of mise en scene with the prop being
the ice cream. Particularly in the way she is
shown to have half the spoon in her mouth and
half out, this could be her reminiscing to the
younger moments in life where ice cream
seemed to everything better.
The mise en scene is again used through Julia
Robertsâ outfit. They have layered her with various
colours of blue from her jeans to her shoes and
scarf, even the colour of the spoon in her mouth.
Not only the main character but also the nun
sitting beside her is seen to be wearing all blue.
The colour blue connotes freedom and being
calm, it easily reminds everyone of the ocean
which is relaxing. Therefore, through the constant
use of the colour it can be indicating to the
audience of the character freeing herself.
The intertitle shown âLet Yourself Goâ supports the
suggestion made previously with the mise en scene as it
shows clearly that the film is about finding and being
yourself. The intertitles make sense of the picture in front
of the audience as she eats ice cream dressed informally
like she isnât phased about anything, moreover showing
she has let herself go.
The location of the poster is shown to be in
a foreign country due to the backgrounding
of where the characters are sitting. It looks
similarly like a church perhaps or a building
that holds importance. However, they have
picked a place that shows simplicity yet still
manages to show beauty of the country.
The suggestion of this also links in with the
intertitles and mise en scene, as it supports
the idea of the character discovering herself
again through different countries.
As mentioned previously, Julia Robertsâ outfit choice is
mainly various shades of blue. But her overall outfit is
very informal and dressed down, dressed in jeans, flats
and a leather jacket it shows her simplicity. Her character
is presented to the audience to be average and ordinary,
moreover she is being shown as any other person which
is intentional. This is as the poster is quite simple which
makes the audience question what the narrative of the
film could be as no clues are given away from the poster.
Eat, Pray, Love
2. Scream
The lack of colour on the film poster is
intentionally done to not only reflect the
genre very clearly. It is also done to the
mystery of the film itself, the main
colour used is black which connotes
death and evil. As well as the main
image itself which shows a female
character shocked as she covers her
mouth. This is done to present the idea
to the audience that the film will
surprise them.
The intertitles help build an understanding to
what the film could be about but also adds the
same element of mystery as mentioned before.
âSolving this mystery is going to be murder.â
this suggests again the idea of surprise for the
audience as they do not know what to expect.
Moreover, in the first line they use the pronoun
âtheirâ which suggests especially from the main
image of the young female character, that it is
more likely assumed by the genre that it will be
based around a group of friends.
The titles stand out as along with the intertitles are in white
font. However in comparison to the simple font shown for
the intertitle, the title for the film name is bolded. This is
purposely done to attract the main attention from the
image to the title. The titles are also spaced out from each
other, which fits in with the idea of being shaken which is
evidently shown to be a theme throughout the film poster.
Unlike the previous poster for the romance drama film,
the horror poster shows an extreme close up image of
the female character. Therefore the audience are
completely unaware of the location or any other
association with the film other than her face. This again
builds the enigma code that they are trying to build
with the limited amount of information theyâve
provided.
âThe highly acclaimed new thriller from Wes Cravenâ
this statement is used to attract the audience and
even fans of the writer/producer/director. Therefore
by the lack of information on the poster, this
statement can add reassurance for any of the
audience, who are aware of Craven that the film will
be worth watching.
The only colour in the whole of the
poster is from the eyes that are
coloured to be grey/blue.
Therefore the colours are limited
and are not varied which is fitting
to the genre. The colour is
normally used to portray positivity,
however in this case does not
apply as it is shown to show the
vulnerability of the character.
