SPEAKER- the "voice"whichseemstobe tellingthe poem.Notthe same as the poet;thisislike a
narrator.
SYMBOL - a symbol hastwolevelsof meaning,aliteral level andafigurative level.Characters,objects,
eventsandsettingscanall be symbolicinthattheyrepresentsomethingelsebeyondthemselves.
SYNEDOCHE - the use of a part forthe whole idea.
THEME - is the central ideaof the story, usuallyimpliedratherthandirectlystated.Itisthe writer'sidea
abut life andcan be impliedordirectlystatedthroughthe voice of the speaker.Itshouldnotbe
confusedwithmoral orplot.
TONE - isthe poet'sattitude towardhis/hersubjectorreaders.itissimilartotone of voice butshould
not be confusedwithmoodoratmosphere.Anauthor'stone mightbe sarcastic,sincere,humourous...
TROPE - a figure of speech inwhicha wordisusedoutside itsliteral meaning.Simile andmetaphorare
the two mostcommontropes.
UNDERSTATEMENT - thisis sayinglessthanwhatyoumeanin the service of truth.
VOICE- the creatingand artisticintelligence thatwe recognize behindanyspeaker.
