2. ASA Codes

2 Recognition of
marketing
communications
3 Misleading Adverts When advertising your product you cannot show
something misleading to make the consumer want the
product more
4 Harm and Offence When advertising your product you need to be careful that
you have considered your advert fully, making sure you
will not offend any race, gender, sexual orientation,
disability and age. Your advert cannot glorify or condone
violence or anti-social behaviour.
5 Children When making your advertisement you cannot specifically
aim the advert at children, it has to be aimed at the
parents too, you also cannot encourage children to do or
try dangerous things or to go somewhere unsafe.
6 Privacy You cannot refer or portray anyone in an offensive way
unless that person has given the marketer permission to
allow it, you cannot film in a crowd of people without
proper permission.
15 Food, food When advertising food you need to promote good health,
3. Mind Map
Coca Cola
Poster
Ideas
Old School/Retro
This can be appealing to
anyone of any age, it might
remind the older generation
of when they were younger
and it might interest the
younger generation to see
what a popular drink used to
look like.
Modern
This might be more appealing
to the younger generation as
it is much more modernised.
Age Group
The poster I am making will be
aimed towards 16-18 year
olds, therefore I think if the
poster is modern but with a
touch of retro it will be
appealing to most people, I am
considering doing this by
adding retro video games to
the background.
Colour
Scheme
For the colour
scheme I am
thinking of
sticking with
black and red
but adding a
few retro
colours in like a
light tint of
green and
yellow.
Seasons
Seasons could play a big part into my retro
scheme as I could consider using some
cult classic horror movies as the
background considering Halloween is
coming up soon, I could add Michael
Myers, Jason, Freddy, the Scream mask
and many others, although I will have to
be careful when doing this so I do not
scare people that buy the product.
Message
Coca Cola’s slogan is life tastes
good, I think this slogan would
work really well with a background
full of well known horror movie
killers that just won’t die. I think it
would work well because it’s quite
ironic. Or a poster of one of the
characters drinking a Coca Cola.
4. Mind Map
• Strengths of using this method
– I can easily separate all the ideas I have to consider and split them up into different
categories easily.
– It’s quick and easy.
– At any point I can change and adapt the mind map.
• Weaknesses of using this method
– Some people might find this method difficult and not too easy to follow
• Did you like using this method? Why?
I like this method because I find it easy to follow and do, and if I have a change in ideas I can
change to suit my new ideas, it’s quick and easy to do. It’s a quick way to develop my ideas and
give me new ones, for example at first I had the idea of doing a retro video game background but
when I considered that Halloween is coming up I had another idea to use a cult classic horror
movie villain.
6. Mood Board
• Strengths of using this method
– Once you know what pictures you need and want it’s easy to put them together.
– You can change any of the pictures any time you want if you have a new idea.
– It’s easy to follow.
• Weaknesses of using this method
– It might be quite time consuming finding a certain picture you really want for a certain
idea you have.
– You might put a mood board together and suddenly decide on another idea, so you will
have to spend a while changing it.
• Did you like using this method? Why?
I like this method because I find it really easy to follow and it has given me some more ideas to go
with the themes I have planned, for example I am thinking of using the Tetris background but
make it look like the blocks are building a coke bottle.
8. Style Sheet
• Strengths of using this method
– It can help you find all the different font styles and colours you want to use for your
advertisement.
– It’s like a mood board so it can always be easily changed and adapted.
– It’s easy to follow.
• Weaknesses of using this method
– You might struggle to find the exact font you want to use which might take up a lot of
time.
– You might also struggle to find the exact colour scheme you want to use, which might
also take up a lot of your time.
• Did you like using this method? Why?
I liked using this method because it gave me the right font’s and colour scheme I want to use for
my advert, it also gave me some other ideas for the ideas I have thought of.
9. Layout Plan
Picture
(character holding a
crate of coke)
This is the font I am
going to use, I am
going to use this for
cokes slogan “life
tastes good”.
I decided to use
this slogan
because I think it
goes well with the
Halloween theme I
am using.
This is the colour scheme I
am going to use for the
advert, I decided to use this
colour scheme because it
matches the colour scheme
for coke and most horror
films.
I have decided to use a
picture of a dark forest as
the background, I think
this goes well with the
theme as I have gone for
a Halloween coke poster.
Text
( The
slogan
“life
tastes
good” )
Background (
dark Forest)
Social media logos
Camp Crystal
Lake sign
10. Layout Plan
• Strengths of using this method
– Using the layout plan helps me know how I want my poster to be set out, where I would
like to have the picture and the text.
• Weaknesses of using this method
– The weakness of this method is that you might have a lot of ideas and not be able to do
them, which might restrict you.
• Did you like using this method? Why?
I like using this method because I am able to plan the order of things in my advert, where I can
put the picture and text, what works well where, so when I start to sketch my advert I will know
where to put certain things.
11. Brainstorm
• Always have a song about Coke.
• About how it goes with everything.
• About how Coke makes you happy.
• Sound effects ( drinking, opening a can. )
• Can be seasonal.
• Add something promotional ( competition. )
• Always get the message you have about the product across.
• Always know your target audience so you know how to aim the product at them.
• Know which Coke product you are advertising or if you are advertising the company and all
it’s products.
• Rhetorical questions.
• Rhythm
12. Brainstorm
• Strengths of using this method
– The strength of this method is that it gives you an opportunity to come up with more
ideas and different layouts of your advertiment, just in case you want to change
anything before you actually make it, it also gives you more of a chance to decide what
you actually want to write on your poster and you want to display it to your target
audience.
• Weaknesses of using this method
– It might take you a while to come up with any new ideas or ways to change your layout,
you might find it difficult to aim the advert at a certain target audience if you haven’t
done this type of work before.
• Did you like using this method? Why?
I like this method because it gave me the chance to re think the layout of my design and what
colours and fonts I think go well with my idea. It also gave me a chance to re think how I will aim
it at my target audience and not break any of the ASA rules.
13. Informal Pitch
• Strengths of using this method
– One strength of using this method is that you work in a group which means you can bounce around
a lot of ideas in between each other and decide how you want to make your advert, it’s also a lot
easier working in a group because everyone has a role so you aren’t doing everything yourself.
Another strength of this method is that you can talk to your tutor about your idea so your tutor can
give you advice on what to improve and if you are within the ASA rules.
• Weaknesses of using this method
– One weakness of using this method is that when working in a group if you're not very good at
talking to others you might not be able to get your idea across to the other group members.
Another weakness is that if someone in your group isn’t as working as hard as the others you might
have to finish their work so the whole group doesn’t fail. The final weakness is that when you
present your idea to your tutor and if you aren’t within the ASA guidelines or your tutor things you
should do something more aimed towards your target audience you will have to start again.
• Did you like using this method? Why?
I enjoyed using this method because it gave me a chance to work in a group with new people on my course,
which gave me the opportunity to make new friends. Another reason I like this method is because I find it a
lot easier to work in a group because you can all share ideas and then come up with a final idea, everyone
has their role, which means it’s a lot easier because you only have specific things to do and not the whole
assignment.
14. Group Idea Generation
• Quick
• Easy to remember
• Catchy
• Sound effects
• Up beat
• Slogan
• Humour
• Clear
15. Group Idea Generation
• Strengths of using this method
– When working with this method one strength is that you are working with multiple
people, this means you can all talk about your ideas and develop them further and
decide what idea to work on, another strength is that everyone can assign themselves
they’re own tasks so the work is shared equally.
• Weaknesses of using this method
– One weakness of working in this method is that one member of your team might not be
as vocal as the others, which means you might not get everyone’s ideas and opinions,
another weakness is that a tem member might not be there one day so you might fall
behind.
• Did you like using this method? Why?
I enjoyed using this method because it gave me the chance to develop my own ideas by listening
to my team members ideas and opinions, another reason I liked using this method is that all the
work was shared out between us so we all managed to get our parts done easily.
16. Formal Pitch
• Strengths of using this method
– One strength of using this method is that it is more likely that you will present your ideas to a larger
group of people unlike in the informal pitch. People aged 20 and above are more likely going to
favour a formal proposal because they can learn a lot about the product, what the price is, how it
could effect them.
• Weaknesses of using this method
– One weakness of using this method is that it would be ineffective considering my target audience is
people aged between 16-20, they would prefer an informal pitch as it is more interesting and goes
straight to the point unlike a formal pitch.
• Did you like using this method? Why?
I liked using this method because I think it is a very good way to show your audience a lot about your
product and it helps to tempt them to buy it. But considering the product and the target audience I have, I
don’t think that this method is very effective.
17. Initial Reaction
• My initial reaction to this part of the assignment was stress and curiosity, these
were my initial reactions because I was really confused as to how we were going to
make the advergame, which stressed me out a lot. My other reaction was curiosity
because I had never made an advergame before, I had never even heard of them
before this project. But once I found out it was simple to make on Photoshop, by
using multiple frames, which I had done before with a different project when
animating.
18. Initial Reaction
• Strengths of using this method
– One strength of the initial reaction is that it gives you a chance to process your first
thoughts about the production so you can have a chance to think of what you want to
do. Another strength of this is that it makes you think of the task in more detail and be
able to identify your own strengths and weaknesses.
• Weaknesses of using this method
– One weakness of using this method is that unlike in the group task in this task you don’t
get any other ideas from anyone else. Another weakness is that you need to prioritise
your ideas, you can’t put all of them down.
• Did you like using this method? Why?
I liked using his method because it gave me time to think of how I could design my game, how I
could aim it towards my target audience and promote the product.
20. Sketches
• Strengths of using this method
– One strength of using his method is that you can sketch down all the ideas and elements
of your video game that needs to move. Another strength of using this method is that it
gives you a chance to sketch any ideas that you have so hen you can use the one’s you
think will be best to use.
• Weaknesses of using this method
– One weakness of using his method is that you might not be good at drawing and
sketching so it might take you some time to sketch all your ideas down exactly how you
want them to look. Another weakness of his method is that some of your ideas might
not work with your criteria.
• Did you like using this method? Why?
I like using this method because it gives me a chance to sketch out all the ideas I have for the
game so I know what works best and what doesn’t, also I can sketch out all elements of the game
so I know exactly how I needs to look and play like.
21. Formal Proposal
• Strengths of using this method
– One strength of using this method is that it allows you to plan what product you are advertising and
how you are going advertise it. Another strength of this method is that it allows you to think about
how the product will be advertised all over the world, if any changes are needed so you don’t
offend people. It also allows you to consider all legal and ethical considerations.
• Weaknesses of using this method
– One weakness of using this method is that it doesn’t allow to put all of your ideas down, so when
you come to present your ideas you will have to choose two ideas instead of being able to present
all the ideas you have.
• Did you like using this method? Why?
I enjoyed using this method because it gave me a chance to consider all legal and ethical considerations
when making my products, it also gave me the chance to pick the idea I think will work best, instead of
having to present multiple ideas.
