1. Question 4
The kind of media institution that
may distribute my media product
2. Production Companies that could
distribute my media product
• I believe a number of media institutions could distribute my thriller
opening, but the two companies that I planned on distributing my media
product were Film4 and the Weinstein Company. Film4 seemed viable, as
its main product was British films, that whilst critically and commercially
successful, weren't mainstream. I believe that Film4 would be interested
in my British thriller, as the genre is mostly dominated by American giants,
such as American Psycho and Se7en. Film4 would also be a platform for
turning my media product into a television movie, as films produced by
Film4 are aired regularly on the channel. The Weinstein Company is well
known for its work with Quentin Tarantino, and I believe my use of post-
modernist techniques may mean that my opening would sit well with
other products this production company has produced. It is also worked
with major Hollywood films, such as Oscar-winning Silver Linings Playbook.
I also created my own production company, Evil Twin Productions, which
would serve as the face for my thriller, as I wanted to create a company
whose purpose was to release my media product, whilst working with
some larger institutions for mainstream distribution.
3. Why I believe my media product could
be a major Hollywood production
• As stated above, I believe my thriller opening could be
something that could be distributed or produced by a
major Hollywood company - one of the companies I
have researched is the Weinstein Company, and for
aforementioned reasons, I believe my thriller would be
of interest to the Weinstein Company, which is a large
studio. Also it is an English thriller, a genre normally
dominated by American films, and the company may
find my English thriller a very interesting prospect.
Lastly, it follows in the footsteps of may large
films, such as se7en and black swan, all which met with
critical and commercial acclaim.
4. Other platforms my media product
could be displayed on
• I believe it could be a TV movie because, as mentioned
above Film4 is one of the production companies I
looked into, and Film4 normally grants its products a
large amount of airtime on its channel, for example
This Is England, which airs, on average, every four-five
months. I believe my media product would have to be
aired after the nine 'o clock watershed, but I do not
believe this would dissuade my target audience, or
Film4. I do not believe that I would not be an art house
film, as I have stated above I believe it would be a
rather larger production, perhaps with the backing of a
large company. For similar reasons, I do not believe it
would be an internet only release.
5. The purpose and continuation of my
media product
• It would be released to entice its set target audience
whilst also perhaps crossing over to a wider
mainstream audience, such as similar thrillers, Se7en
and Black Swan. Due to the plot twist at the end of my
thriller, there could be no continuation of my film in
sequels or other films, and I see no massive market for
merchandising, as thriller's rarely tend to have markets
for merchandising, as the point of them is to thrill the
audience, not entertainment value, the usual cause for
merchandising. Other thrillers I have studied have not
had a massive amount of merchandising, aside from
posters and other promotional items.
6. How my mise en scene and links to my
film and other similar films.
• I feel my mise en scene links my film to the two production
companies I hope to endorse it. The mise en scene
connotes much about the film, but also about the
enterprise in which I am hoping to advance. For
example, the streets and accents of my characters are
definitely British - which would appeal to a British audience
and make my thriller firmly British. Also camera types such
as the two-shot at the beginning of my thriller are directly
post-modernist and in the style of Tarantino, something
that may link to a more mainstream audience, due to its
use in entertaining, mainstream films, such as British
gangster film Snatch, and also the Weinstein Company, who
produce the post-modernist Tarantino.
