1. Question 3
What kind of media institutions might distribute your
product and why?
Film distribution is the process of making films available for
an audience to view.
There are many different film distribution companies worldwide
that work as a vital part in gaining an audience for the
film, regardless of the genre or general quality of the film.
There are six main distribution companies in America, also
know as The Big Six, theses companies are Warner Bros,
Universal, The Walt Disney Company, Paramount Pictures, 21st
Century Fox and Colombia. These are all examples of large-
scale distribution companies that sell to larger audiences and
have a higher budget, also known as Major distribution labels.
In the UK however there are more Independent production
companies, these are smaller companies that have lower budget
and aim their product to smaller target audiences. Some of these
companies include Metrodome, Optimum Releasing and
Momentum.
Paramount Pictures
There are many benefits that would come from
using a major distribution company such as
Paramount or a subsidiary company to these
major distribution companies to distribute my
film, Fix Me, as Paramount have distributed
many Supernatural films such as Paranormal
Activity which earned $193.4 million at box
office or Walt Disney studios as they have also
produced and distributed many Supernatural
films such as The Sixth Sense which earned a
profit of $672.8 million at box office. From the
major success of their films it is apparent that
they know the best ways to promote and
distribute the films based on the Genre and
target audience.
2. Hammer Films
Hammer Films productions is a smaller British
company that could distribute my film 'Fix Me'
as although they mainly distribute Horror films
they also distribute Thrillers and Supernatural
films. , Hammer films are very successful as the
vast majority of films distributed by them have
been successful and made a lot of money in Box
office alone, such as the film Let Me In, which
earned slight more than $24 million in box office
alone. As Hammer film Production is a smaller
British film production/ distribution company they
have more experience in distributing film with a
smaller budget but still gaining a large audience
and in turn a larger profit.
I think my film would be best suited for an Independent film
distribution company as it would not be that expensive to
produce as it won't involve a lot of special effects or travelling
and as the film is set in an everyday British teenagers life i
believe it would be better suited or more popular with a British
teenage audience.
I believe that the best way to distribute my product would be to
use the internet. A good example of a film that utilised the
Internet in marketing and distribution is Ill Manors by Plan B,
similarly to Ill Manors i think the best way to distribute my
3. product would be after attracting attention to my film through
social media and posters, to play the film in cinemas around
Britain, which again would help to attract a larger audience to
the film through reviews and word of mouth then put my film
on legal Internet sights like Netflix as the amount of people that
are using website similar to Netflix is increasing and on Netflix
in particular it all owe you to see a selection of films similar to
ones you have seen in the past and it give 'recommended films
to watch' which could be very beneficial for my films 'Fix Me'
as it doesn't fully conform to all of the Supernatural film
conventions so it would come under more categories and there
would be more similarities to a wider variety of films, meaning
it could be recommend more.
