 An institution is:
A media conglomerate, media group,
or media institution is a company that owns
numerous companies in various
mass media; i.e. television, radio, publishing,
motion picture, and the Internet.
My media product is a film opening, so I will be researching film
institutions to distribute my media product. When choosing the media
institution, I have carefully thought about the genre of my film and the
genre of films that the media institutions have biggest success in
distributing. I have also decided to think about my target audience, so for
that reason it is very unlikely that I will choose an institute that target a
similar age range and a similar audience to my audience. My film opening
is horror, so I will be hoping to find a film institution that distribute many
horror films. Here are a few institutions I am going to be looking at:
 20th century fox
 Hammer Productions
 Lionsgate
All of the above institutions have previous success in the distribution of
horror films, and films in other genres that target my target audience,
which benefits me a lot as it means that if they distribute my film a large
percentage of their usual audience would fit my wanted age range for my
film and therefore my media product would get more attention by these
distributors over others.
 Lionsgate is based in Canada as it is a
entertainment company set up there. They
were founded in 1986, and they are
international all round the worlds distributing
their films all round the world. As of
November 2013, it is the most commercially
successful mini major film and television
distribution company in North America and
the seventh most profitable movie studio.
 Lionsgate Films have produced/ distributed many horror films
over a long period of time. They have produced/ distributed
films such as 'The Cabin In The Woods’, ‘The Last Exorcism’
and ‘The Abandoned’. All of these films were though quite
high budget and sometimes from very well known directors or
had large film stars act in them, this could affect whether they
wanted to distribute a independent film like mine. However
because Lionsgate film institution is not renowned for horror
films as they are well know for films such as ‘The Hunger
Games’ series. This could benefit me as it may mean they
wouldn’t necessarily want to spend a lot on a new upcoming
horror film which would be perfect for a independent film
maker such as myself, however@@ want to help distribute
my film as the last time they distributed a horror film was in
2014 and therefore fans of Lionsgate horror films may be
wanting a new film to be out and that would mean they would
be eager to distribute my media product as it would benefit
both myself and Lionsgate due to their audience being able to
have a new film to go and see.
Twentieth Century Fox Film Corporation is an
American film studio, distributor and one of the
six major American film studios. Located in
the Century City area of Los Angeles, just west
of Beverly Hills, the studio is currently owned by 21st
Century Fox and is formerly owned by News
Corporation. They have distributed films such as the
‘Star Wars’ trilogy, ‘Planet Of The Apes’, ‘X-men’ and
the ‘Die hard’ series. 20th Century Fox is a member of
the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA). In
2015, 20th Century Fox celebrated its 80th
anniversary as a studio.
Due to their size 20th century Fox would be ideal to distribute my media product as it would mean my
audience for my film would be instantly worldwide and would be able to be consumed in thousands of
cinemas internationally very quickly due to their sheer power in the film industry being owned by 21st
century fox. Fox have had many successful films produced and continue to do so and grow. 20th
century fox have their most successful films produced and distributed in the genre comedy and family
home movies, here are some examples:
 Alvin and the Chipmunks
 Night At The Museum
 Diary of a Wimpy Kid
 The chronicles of Narnia
 Avatar
 Star wars
 X-men
Most of 20th century fox films are targeted to families with young children, because it is comedy it is
suitable for families with children across all ranges. This is a negative point for them to distribute our
movie, because the genre is different and the target audience is different too. Although their most
successful and profitable films come under the genre of comedy, fantasy and family films. Fox also
have experience and success in the genre of horror too. Here are a few examples The Omen
(1976,suspense horror), Hell (2011, crime drama horror), Jennifer's Body (2009, black comedy
horror),The Haunting of Molly Hartley (2008, supernatural horror)These are just a few of their horror
film successes. 20th century fox targeted much older people when it came to their horror movies, this
is another reason which makes me realize that the 20th century fox would not be suited to distributing
my film as they would not be able to make it as successful as another media institution could due to
my age range as being 15-28.
Hammer Films are a UK based production and distribution company which was
formed and founded in 1934. Unlike the other two Hammer films are a much
smaller media institute, however they have still had many film successes where
they were able to overturn lots of profit such as from their very popular old horror
films from the 40’s onwards. Their main distribution is set on the horror genre,
this therefore means they are perfect for me as they would be interested in my
film due to its genre more than the other two
 Hammer’s main distribution is set on the horror genre, this therefore
means they are perfect for me as they would be interested in my film
due to its genre more than the other two distribution companies as their
focus is most the time on other genres meaning a larger percentage of
their audience would be looking for different film genres to be coming
out. Hammer is a UK based production and unlike American media
productions, Hammer do not produce just mainstream films, they have
experience in producing films for a wide range of different target
audiences and for people with different taste in horror films, they
produce a wide variety of sub genres as well. I am confident I would
choose this distribution company as they are also able to appeal to a
younger audience as they have had success in their films they have
distributed which have been aimed at a younger target audience.
Overall I would place Hammer Films as my number one for who I would
choose to distribute my film… This is because they would suit my film the
most and the fact I’m an independent film maker and they are smaller and
more liekly to produce and distribute my product, the decision also
includes numerous decisions such as;
 All the film they distribute are horror
 They are a UK based company compared to USA and Canada for the
other two
 They would be much cheaper as they are much smaller companies
and are not owned by larger conglomerates such as 21st Century Fox
 The specific type of film I have produced will stand out compared to
their usual selection of films and also as they have not distributed a
film in the last few years it would be a perfect gap in the market for
them to fill and continue their portfolio with another horror which would
appeal to a more specific target audience (teenagers)
Lionsgate entertainment would be second and 20th Century Fox third.
